Yes, this is Gamespot and only Gamespot matters, but guess what, the voters who REALLY matter AGREE with Gamespot.

Lets face facts, editors and reviewers of game sites are just a few people on each site. The ones who buy the majority of games are the gamers themselves and on almost every web site (Gamespot, IGN, GiantBomb, gametrailers etc) the READER'S choice, the GAMER'S choice for game of the year, was Metal Gear Solid 4.

I would be MUCH more apt to purchase a game due to what my peers have said than a couple people who edit a gaming site.

So quite frankly I don't care WHAT IGN, Giant Bomb or even Gamespot say, it's the reader's choices that I care the most about. It just so happens Gaespot agreed with the gamers this year =)

I'd rather purchase a game based on how i think it looks. Not because of what other gamers think of it.

Gamespot seems to agree with gamers every year. Same with most other sites. While GOTY winners are splits between different sites, many of us can agree MGS4 is the best, or GTA4, or Fallout 3, and so on.

Please the only reason MGSIV won isbecause the PS3 owners don#t have any games to play. So they spend all there time on the internet taking part in polls, Us 360 owners play our games.

Simple when you think about it.

I tend not to listen to my peers one Fable 2 becomes Fable HD, Gears of War 1 and 2 become generic shooter 1 and 2, Fallout 3 becomes The Elder Scrolls 5, and so on. My vote matters to me, no one elses does... Except Zero Punctuation of course.

The only reason MGS4 (not IV) won was becuase it was a masterpeice, and PS3 owners like myself play R2, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, and so many others. Your opinion is also unwanted because you obviously never had a PS3 or MGS4, so GTFO. Simple when you think about it.

Yeah people went creazy over platformer of the year though.

I think I'm more interested in what gamespot and other game review sites have to say since they all should know what they're talking and likely played all the nominees to completion also they'd actually have to think about not being biast and the fact that a group of them have to come to a agreement. Though maybe still just some people's opinion there at least people with good reasoning.

To be honest I'm not to bothered either way, nothing changes what your favourite game of the year was right?

That's flawed thinking and you know for a fact it is. The only reason you use it is because you probably didn't think MGS4 deserved game of the year.

The simple FACT is almost everything we purchase is based on other people whether it be friends, acquaintances, people on TV or people giving reviews online. People who don't do research and talk to others about products, especially expensive products, tend to get buyer's remorse a lot.

If I believed like you believed I would have bought Haze and wasted 60 bucks of my money, but everyone was saying it sucked so I rented it and indeed, it sucked.

If voters are what really matter, than why did you forget that System Wars voted for anarchy? "Only GameSpot counts on GameSpot" is pretty last gen and should be forgotten already.

Lots of people used to have the opinion that the world was flat and if they sailed to the horizon they'd fall off into space.

That was flawed thinking too.

To be an informed consumer, especially on expensive purposes, means you won't have as much buyer's remorse and will thus save money. That is a good thing. In order to be that consumer you must get as much information and as many opinions as possible in order to form your own educated opinion.

This is something consumer advocates like Ralph Nader have been trying to grill into people's heads for ages yet many do not listen and the "impulse buy" continues to put people into the poor house and rack up horrible credit card debts.

No, that's how mindless drones work. And their opinion is worthless. THis is entertainment industry, the thing that's voted as the most popular and best almost never is the best, it's just "decent enough" to fit to large ammount of tastes. LIstening to the whole population of gamers as your guide is just a dumb thing to do. We as customers do value the opinion of others, but we value the opinion of selected individuals or groups, the ones we trust or the ones we have similiar taste to. GOTY votes come from the general population, so it's completely useless for deciding what is your goty.

And I don't know how old you are and how long you've been playing, but I've been gaming for over 20 years and I've played thousands of games and in majority of cases I myself decide if I will like a game or not, it's not influenced by others. I know what type of games I like and I often played games those people worked on before. THis alone is enough for me to look at vids and try the demo and then decide for myself.

It's all opinions. I personally thought that there were better games out there. I thought MGS4 was very well made, but some of the gameplay was not that great, and the story made suspension of disbelief impossible.

Back then, the world being flat was fact, not opinion. Secondly, if you want to save money, try renting the game. Really works.

Except you aren't an educated consumer, you're like a religious person, taking everything on faith. This is gaming, you can check it out for yourself before you buy it. You don't need the help of others to make an informed purchase

Fanboys or not, they obviously voted for the game they believed deserved GOTY. Each game has plenty of so-called "fanboys".

MGS4 winning game of the year is not a bummer for me. The thing that makes Gamespot GOTY flawed and overall pointless in my opinion was that they left a game that was considered a GOTY out...Gears 2. The reason that they left it off was even more lame. They stated because "NOBODY" was passionate about Gears 2....but they were about all of the other games. Okay. Im not saying MY opinion is king, or trumps anybody elses.....but thats just LAME in my opinion.

The number of fanboys a game has does not denote quality in the game.

Ahh the age old "I don't know how old you are".

I'm 35 years old born 10/11/1973. I've been gaming since Zork my friend. Nice try though!

The simple fact is word of mouth and research will determine whether I avoid, rent or buy a game and it has worked for over 25 years of gaming for me.

Scores are good for ownage, but when I buy a game, I only do so after having read several reviews, so I know exactly what I'm getting. As for user scores, those are never reliable. Ever.

If you're already biased against the game in your mind, then of course you will not see the amount of polish that went into making the game.

Same thing applies to every other experience in life - if you already believe it sucks before you try it, you'll end up not liking it, even if it's great.

Nice it works for you, but I fail to see why do you assume exactly the mechanism works for everybody. It doesn't for me and for most people I know. It's fun that you put blind faith into opinions of others, heck into opinion of mass public ( I could understand trusting some selected source, but mass population? That is something I would never do). I prefer to decide things for myself

Well with the price of each game nowadays, is wise to take other gamers opinion to make your decision. Not imitate, just analyse.

I have such a love hate relationship with MGS4 that I could never give it game of the year.

The battle that rages in my head about my feelings for MGS4 never end.

with the prices so high, opinions of others shouldn't affect your choice in a large way.
