Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't "kiddy" games games played by children? People generally seem to think they are non-violent cartoony games. But why do I see children nowadays playing GTA instead of say, Pokémon? Why do I see kids with PSP's and not DS's? Is GTA kiddy by that definition? And if cartoony games get released on non-Nintendo systems, why do fanboys of their systems suddenly like them (Jak and Daxter, Blue Dragon etc). It shows hypocrisy and irony in my opinion. Anybody else agree?

From the sticky at the top of the board. Kiddy- a name used to insault cartoon like graphics as being something a child would enjoy.

Yeah I was just using a Gamespot definition since it was stickied. It isn't really what I think the definition is. My dad's boss's kids are sorta dore-freaks and it's kind of disturbing... I would define kiddy in a whole different way than most people here, but since they only take into consideration their own opinion and Gamespot's, I decided to post GS's and not mine.

even so, i think it has some promise.... nobody should judge a game by it's kiddy factor unless it's say, strawberry shortcake or hello kitty or something. i think kiddy and girly get mixed up sometimes.

To me, "kiddy" refers to a game with a child-friendly cartoon character (like Mario) or a franchise with children as the main characters (like Pokemon).  Also, these games do not touch real issues such as death, pain, sexual themes, nor even complex conversation.  In Mario 64, for example, when Mario lands in lava he pops up in the air covering his smoking butt.  However, I must state that I don't have a problem with kiddy games, so long as they arn't the only thing available for the most part on a given system.

The "misconception" is that the Wii is aimed at "kiddies."Spartan070

Well Wii is inherently more "kiddy" than the other consoles, it's jsut a fact.  WIi targets little girls, non-gamers, etc. as a part of their selling base.  These "kiddy" games sell to little girls, little boys, non-gamers etc.  So to say that the Wii is not kiddy (or as kiddy, if not less, than the PS3/360) is wrong.

see and this is the problem. Just cus a game is intended to be acceptable for all age groups doesnt mean its targeted at "little boys and girls"

mario is acceptable for kids and they enjoy it, but so do I and most if not all of my 20 something friends as well as my 50 year old parents.

Ok.....Wii user bases is made up of more casuals (therefore a larger crowd that likes these more "kiddy" games) so natually it's gonna have more games tarageted at that audience which is why it has the "kiddy" moniker.

Id like to see the actual stats, and surveys for that one..  but I doubt they exist.

casual games also do not equal kiddy games.    Most games out on the wii target a very broad audience which may include children.

but this does not make the wii kiddy.   nintendo has and always will aim their games at as broad of an audience as possible, partly why there are fewer M rated games on their consoles, but this by no means makes them kiddy.

A large chunck of games out now do target casuals, or the pick up and play gamers.  But that doesnt make wii sports kiddy.  that doesnt make super swing golf kiddy.

it makes them games for everyone.

and people tend to forget games like zelda, red steel COD, metal slug, godfather, all games which are hardly targeted at kids.

the wii is no more or less kiddy than any other system.  The other systems just limit the user base of their games by targeting narrow gamer demographics with each of their games.  I mean, not everyone is able or willing or even interested in getting into games like gears of war.  while most everyone is at least able to get into games like cooking mama, or wii sports

Reggie himself said it (right from the horses mouth)

"Reggie Fils-Aime, as he discussed marketing games, and the forthcoming next-generation Revolution console to casual gamers, families and a female audience, in addition to the 18-24 year old male. "

which is essentially everyone.

thank you for proving my point.

the typical "hardcore" market is the 18-24 (its actually more like 32 but whatever)  add in casuals and families and females.

theyve also been targetting the older audience  as well as the lapse gamers.

this covers a larger demographic than most of the other hardware sellers

Well that doesn't say that all games will be targeted for every audience.  I doubt My Sims is targeted at 18-24 year olds.  With a larger bases of "females, families, and casual gamers", it will have more games targeted specifically at that audience.  Games that are targeted at that audience generally lean to the more kiddy side versus the 18-32 demographic.

the wii is no more or less kiddy than any other system.

Games that are targeted at that audience generally lean to the more kiddy side versus the 18-32 demographic.

no it doesnt mean all games will be targeted at all audiences it means there will be games that target a braoder range of specific demographics along with the games for everyone.

just because there is more of a focus on bringing everyone into gaming does not mean that the hardcore will be forgotten or even pushed to the side.   that would then not include everyone.   But the hardcore will always be there, companies have to work hard to get the new, lapsed, or casual gamers into the market, and more importantly, to keep them there.

[QUOTE="Spartan070"]The "misconception" is that the Wii is aimed at "kiddies."_vacant_

Just cus a game is intended to be acceptable for all age groups doesnt mean its targeted at "little boys and girls"

mario is acceptable for kids and they enjoy it, but so do I and most if not all of my 20 something friends as well as my 50 year old parents.

games for everyone =/= games for kids

Exactly, and they keep them there with games that appeal specifcially to them.......which is why more "kiddy" type games will be on the Wii which is why people give the Wii the "kiddy" moniker.

how does nintendo targetting everyone lead you to think they wont target the hardcore?

the hardcore are a very important market, and tehy realise that, thats why there are games like final fantasy, dragon quest, fire emblem, resident evil, zelda, mario and metroid.
Thats not only "kiddy games"

right now nintendo has shown a push to expand the market, something they needed right away, they have that, and now we see the "hardcore" games coming out. and surprisingly fast.  (a good chunck in the first year)   as time goes on, a better balance will be stuck, we already see that happening.

Those who denounce a game as kiddy based on colour scheme, artistic direction, chirpy music or simplicity are exhibiting behaviour of a child. Judging on appearance alone is always misleading, Pokemon is one of the most complex and in-depth games around, Mario is challenging and engaging, Animal Crossing is basic in premise yet endless in potential.

The beauty of Nintendo is striking a balance, the accessibility for a child with hidden quirks and subtle twists for the seasoned gamer. Games such as GTA or Gears of War may have copious amounts of gore and gratuitous use of expletives but they are much more two-dimensional than most supposed kiddy games. A real 'mature' game is something such as Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Baten Kaitos or Eternal Darkness.

If a game is made specifically for a child and has the patronisingly banal gameplay to boot, such as most CG movie tie-ins then yes, that is for a child. However these games appear on every platform under the Sun and are by no means a representation of the hardware.

kiddy means, kid freandly, GTA wasn't developed to be played but people under 17, mario on the other hand was meant to be played by every one. A Kiddy game would be something like overly cute and easy game. Kids don't like and/or don't appresiate serious games, a kid playing GTA only plays it because he thinks its cool, yet he most of the time doesn't undrstand what it going on.

[QUOTE="ShakeNBake1491"][QUOTE="peacebringer"][QUOTE="ShakeNBake1491"]From the sticky at the top of the board. Kiddy- a name used to insault cartoon like graphics as being something a child would enjoy.

actually a game intenedt for kids but kids don't play it cause it's to kiddie so they trade it in for GTA for PSP then i buy the kiddie game at age 25? is that kiddie? I have walked out with FF3 while some kid was trying to buy Saints Row he was like 8 or 10.

Yeah I was just using a Gamespot definition since it was stickied. It isn't really what I think the definition is. My dad's boss's kids are sorta dore-freaks and it's kind of disturbing... I would define kiddy in a whole different way than most people here, but since they only take into consideration their own opinion and Gamespot's, I decided to post GS's and not mine.

feel ya. what they should really say is Japanese instead of kiddie. the japan community as a whole makes t and under rated games because of the religous and ethical beliefs. Gore games are most America territory and Japan ha sbeen making there gaes gory just to compete in US. People call it kiddie but i know they mean it's just Japanese.

Thats where your wrong GTA knew very well it was selling it to kids. reason there in trouble now for giving the game a M rated(wich parents think is like PG13) than the AO(adults only) it should have gotten. stop kidding yourself i played GTA for 2 sec and got bored , my 10 year old cousin still plays GTA since 2003. Adults(like me) can care less about gore and violence as much as some kid who it's all knew to. to me GTA is not even the worst i ever saw(Saw ring a bell) but for kids it's like the holly grail and where they learn there cuss words from.
