Everyone knows him

Everyonehas played his games

His plateformers are the greatest in the industry

HE has been around from the begening and still is going very strong

He has been in everytype of game except a american football game, a shooter, a criket spot game

HE ahs it all he is all around the greatest.

lol Mario. he has like no personality. Solid Snake is the best character. Great voice, he looks cool(the bandana just works) and he's just plain badass. he actually has a personality unlike that lame plumber.

pretty much all of characters in metal gear solid series are great characters because they actually have character and a personality.

Popularity doesn't make a character great. Actually having character does. And Mario has no character, not even in the RPGs. Did you notice that he doesn't speak in them?

Solid Snake and Kratos are both better characters, for starters. Heck, Master Chief is a better character, and he's pretty bland.

Link is popular and iconic as well, but he also lacks any kind of personality. He's supposed to be mute and relatively vapid so the player can put themselves in his shoes. That's a good thing for immersion, but it doesn't make him a good character.

As a character...well obviously Mario is lacking. As an Icon in gaming, he is unmatched.
