By Shing Megami I'm assuming you're referring to the Shin Megami Tensei series by Atlus?

I might have to choose them just because of the sheer amount of quality titles they have that are so unique.  Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, Persona 3 and Devil Summoner, all on the PS2, not to mention it goes back quite a bit.

Add Persona 4 to the mix this December and oh man it's gonna be great.  The interesting thing is that they didn't start adding the SMT tag to Persona until 3 came out.  Persona and Persona 2 are just titled that, no SMT added.

Though I do love the FF series. Having played 1-12, including XI and X-2, I've loved IV-X, though there have been some pretty frustrating elements in some of the games (such as the weapon creation system in VIII, it drove me nuts having to find some of the rarer parts and drawing the decent spells one by one until 3 characters got to 99)

Final fantasy. VI VII and VIII were brilliant games for their time and I still enjoy them to this day, and the series has always maintained its popularity even among the casual audience with short attention spans lol. Its gone down the pan a bit since the PS1 days but Im always hopeful a series will return to its glory of former year :P.

I'm going to say Diablo in terms of quality and Final Fantasy in terms of vastness.

I almost want to say Fallout, but I just choose not to. :P

Personally I would say Diablo.  I spent more time on Battlenet with LOD than any other RPG.

But if I was being nonbiased I would say FF.  The series is long running and a name brand.

Out of that list I'll go with SMT. Personally my favorite RPG series that don't include SRPGs would be either Dragon Quest or Tales games.

Final Fantasy. The only others I've played are Diabo and Elder Scrolls. Diablo was fun, but it's not amazing. My second vote goes to Elder Scrolls.

Actual role-playing isn't defined as stat-building and level grinding. Role-playing is changing and molding the world around your character to how you see fit. Stat-building is a *part* of the role-playing genre, not it's definition. In FF games, you play through a linear game with a linear story and level characters to 99. In role-playing games you interact with NPC's and depending on your actions towards them change their view of you and as a consequence how the world ends up seeing you.

I'm not saying level-grinding cannot be fun, but calling it "role-playing" is a misnomer.

The Shin Megami Tensei series is regarded as one of the finest set of JRPG games to ever exist. Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga being among the best available.

Most of the RPGs are very very linear storywise.. even the modern ones..

the only real tweaks are not in story but character customization.. if that falls flat then i dont consider it very RPGish anymore..

FF IV, VI would be examples of very scenario driven games that have little room for customization

FF III, V or Tactics however have a very wide range of possible character customization

Outside of DQ (because FF is really just a sub series of DQ when it comes down to it)

I would mention Phantasy Star.. it has incorporated many elements that define Japanese RpGs

For its time it was revolutionary..

The greatest role playing franchise is probably Final Fantasy, it was a major influence on how I got into this genre to begin with and without it I still might not like role playing games genre. As for my favorite role playing game, it is easily the Knight of the Old Republic series. Offering great freedom with your character creation while at the same time giving you a choice at what path you walk is truly astonishing. Not to forget at the force power that is available in this game just adds up to why KOTOR is the greatest in my opinion.

Split between FF (especially IV, VI-X) and Fallout 3 (didn't really play the first 2, couldn't find a copy anywhere). Elder Scrolls is an excellent series as well, although the series itself didn't breakthrough until Morrowind came along. Balder's Gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights all deserve mention, with Neverwinter Nights still having new modules coming in as we speak. I really liked the first 2 Diablos though, those games are what got me into the RPG genre in the first place.

I think GOG.Com's beta has ended and it's available to the public...

But I prefered BG2 over the two Fallout games for some reason... :)

You clearly don't have good taste in RPGs if you are not willing to recognize that the Shin Megami Tensei series is one of the best RPG series of all time.Â
