Shin Megami? really? the only good Megami game i've played is Persona 3.
Â
EDIT: out of those, Final Fantasy.Â
By Shing Megami I'm assuming you're referring to the Shin Megami Tensei series by Atlus?
I might have to choose them just because of the sheer amount of quality titles they have that are so unique. Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, Persona 3 and Devil Summoner, all on the PS2, not to mention it goes back quite a bit.
Add Persona 4 to the mix this December and oh man it's gonna be great. The interesting thing is that they didn't start adding the SMT tag to Persona until 3 came out. Persona and Persona 2 are just titled that, no SMT added.
Though I do love the FF series. Having played 1-12, including XI and X-2, I've loved IV-X, though there have been some pretty frustrating elements in some of the games (such as the weapon creation system in VIII, it drove me nuts having to find some of the rarer parts and drawing the decent spells one by one until 3 characters got to 99)
Â
TC, Im reporting you until I see Planescape:Torment on that poll! :x
This is madness!!!!!!!!
:P
I'm going to say Diablo in terms of quality and Final Fantasy in terms of vastness.
I almost want to say Fallout, but I just choose not to. :P
Personally I would say Diablo. I spent more time on Battlenet with LOD than any other RPG.
But if I was being nonbiased I would say FF. The series is long running and a name brand.
My vote is for Final Fantasy games - best story, best characters, best side story quests, amazing art voice acting and voice, the beautiful summons and limit attacks, the most epic battle and the greatest foes in all of the games till our time.NIkoscho
And probably weakest ROLEPLAYING (what RPG games are made for)
Aff well
Dragon Quest hands down

Shin Megami? WTF? You should have added the Tales series, or at least Pokemon instead of Shin Megami...Samurai_Xavier
Final Fantasy followed by Tales.cloudff7tmno that series is just aweful
Â
its a good B tier RPG but it doesnt even come close
Â
i would choose Shin Megami over Tales anydayÂ

Enix is the better part

DQ, DQM, Mysterious Dungeon, Starocean and Valkyrie Profile FTW
Actual role-playing isn't defined as stat-building and level grinding. Role-playing is changing and molding the world around your character to how you see fit. Stat-building is a *part* of the role-playing genre, not it's definition. In FF games, you play through a linear game with a linear story and level characters to 99. In role-playing games you interact with NPC's and depending on your actions towards them change their view of you and as a consequence how the world ends up seeing you.foxhound_fox
Â
Most of the RPGs are very very linear storywise.. even the modern ones..
Â
the only real tweaks are not in story but character customization.. if that falls flat then i dont consider it very RPGish anymore..
Â
FF IV, VI would be examples of very scenario driven games that have little room for customization
FF III, V or Tactics however have a very wide range of possible character customizationÂ
Where's Suikoden series!?!?
Where's Chrono Trigger/Cross?!?!
Where's Xenogears/saga series?!?!?
Where's ALL THE ABOVE?!?!?!?!1
THIS IS MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those were the good old days......
Split between FF (especially IV, VI-X) and Fallout 3 (didn't really play the first 2, couldn't find a copy anywhere). Elder Scrolls is an excellent series as well, although the series itself didn't breakthrough until Morrowind came along. Balder's Gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights all deserve mention, with Neverwinter Nights still having new modules coming in as we speak. I really liked the first 2 Diablos though, those games are what got me into the RPG genre in the first place.hiphops_savior
I think GOG.Com's beta has ended and it's available to the public...
But I prefered BG2 over the two Fallout games for some reason... :)

You clearly don't have good taste in RPGs if you are not willing to recognize that the Shin Megami Tensei series is one of the best RPG series of all time.Â
