Its pretty exciting to see a video game get the same kind of media and advertising space as a blockbuster movie. This is the kind of attention the industry needs.

Discuss.

Agreed though it's hard to name another game that has such a wide audience and has the main stream media enthused as well.

I completely agree. Even though I don't care for Sony one bit, I'd really love to see them put a lot of effort into getting Killzone2's name out there to the casual market. MS is doing this right in hitting up the mainstream and come October and November, I'm sure we'll be seeing the onslaught of advertising for Mass Effect. :)

The first Halo was big. But their are plenty of other games that do just as well. It was Microsoft that pushed Halo 2 as an EVENT. They put money into the advertising and let the world know Halo was coming.

Games like Gears, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, and yes even MGS4 can be in the media's eye but it takes money to put it there.

The Halo fanchise is amazing because it caters to hardcore and casual fans, and is a very accessable shooter to even younger individuals. Halo 3 is going to be hot.

Well in some ways the curse of the Xbox being a FPS console mainly b/c Halo garnered allot of attention where as it's tough to choose a Mario, Zelda or MSG from a crowded field as a main stay all by it self blockbuster though they are in their own right.

So the curse has turned into something of a blessing which saw Halo b/c of the spot light put on it to rise up through all the other stuff to become so well known to even non-gamers and the main stream media.

Wahoo! Then when all the games that developers want to spend money on are basically digital workout sessions, the Sheep can sit there pumping virtual weightssaying "Boy did we show those Cows and Lemmings!"...

 again with such claims. only a stupid industry would put all their efforts into one genre of entertainment. when halo sold well we didn't see all other genre's disappear did we?

Last time I checked, the XBOX was known as a "nothing but shooters" console, and the number of shooters this and last generation compared to last generation prior to Halo was tremendous.

Hell, look at how hard Sony is trying to push Killzone now. Shooter fever? Hell yeah. It may very well be the predominent console genre now, which was certainly not the case before Halo. Bioware just made their first RPG from a shooter perspective, Squaresoft tried their hand at a shooter last gen, Nintendo turned Metroid into a *gasp* first person shooter... The biggest game of this generation is a shooter (Gears), the next biggest game is a shooter (Halo 3), the biggest release on the PC sthis year is a shooter (Crysis), Sony dumped their biggest budget ever on a non MMO into a shooter (KZ2)...Need I go on? And care to pick another example, perhaps one that doesn't illustrate my point?

If you honestly believe this significant spectrum shift of the industry over the last two gens has nothing to do with the industry realizing that shooters sell, you're naive... And if you think it can't happen again for Wiisports/Wiifit/Wiiaerobics/Wiiwhatever, again, you're naive.

well the industry is pretty young, and many don't really know how to effectivily push game adversiements. Though many titles can use an advertising push for others it wouldn't make a difference in sales. From what I've heard Halo 3 actually has less advertising than Halo 2 did and they seem to be focusing much more on cross promotional campaigns (like the Mt Dew Game Fuel).

Disagree. The industry needs more small, sleeper hits like Ico, Tony Hawk, etc. once were. These massive games, while exciting, drain a lot of money and resources from companies. I would rather Eidos spend less money making a new Fear Effect instead of wasting time and money on more Tomb Raider rehashes. I would rather see Ubisoft NOT have a new Splinter Cell every single year and instead take a chance on Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Keep in mind that the Hollywood drive to focus more and more on blockbusters ends up hurting them more than helping as most of these movies flop, the companies lose money, and smaller movies that encourage innovation and true entertainment value get burried because they'd rather that money went to a shallow FX filled blockbuster.

The vast majority of people want quality and replayability and substance over flash. While these aren't always exlusive traits, the movies/games that "have it all" are more the exception than the rule.
