Its pretty exciting to see a video game get the same kind of media and advertising space as a blockbuster movie. This is the kind of attention the industry needs.

I completely agree. Even though I don't care for Sony one bit, I'd really love to see them put a lot of effort into getting Killzone2's name out there to the casual market. MS is doing this right in hitting up the mainstream and come October and November, I'm sure we'll be seeing the onslaught of advertising for Mass Effect. :)
Agreed though it's hard to name another game that has such a wide audience and has the main stream media enthused as well.SecretPolice
The first Halo was big. But their are plenty of other games that do just as well. It was Microsoft that pushed Halo 2 as an EVENT. They put money into the advertising and let the world know Halo was coming.
Games like Gears, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, and yes even MGS4 can be in the media's eye but it takes money to put it there.

Well in some ways the curse of the Xbox being a FPS console mainly b/c Halo garnered allot of attention where as it's tough to choose a Mario, Zelda or MSG from a crowded field as a main stay all by it self blockbuster though they are in their own right. So the curse has turned into something of a blessing which saw Halo b/c of the spot light put on it to rise up through all the other stuff to become so well known to even non-gamers and the main stream media.

 again with such claims. only a stupid industry would put all their efforts into one genre of entertainment. when halo sold well we didn't see all other genre's disappear did we?

Disagree. The industry needs more small, sleeper hits like Ico, Tony Hawk, etc. once were. These massive games, while exciting, drain a lot of money and resources from companies. I would rather Eidos spend less money making a new Fear Effect instead of wasting time and money on more Tomb Raider rehashes. I would rather see Ubisoft NOT have a new Splinter Cell every single year and instead take a chance on Beyond Good and Evil 2.
Keep in mind that the Hollywood drive to focus more and more on blockbusters ends up hurting them more than helping as most of these movies flop, the companies lose money, and smaller movies that encourage innovation and true entertainment value get burried because they'd rather that money went to a shallow FX filled blockbuster.
The vast majority of people want quality and replayability and substance over flash. While these aren't always exlusive traits, the movies/games that "have it all" are more the exception than the rule.
