Well I'm really tired of collecting old hardware. Though it does bring a nostalgic feeling sometimes, I think the best way foward would be to have one console to rule them all kind of thing. I think a gaming pc and a "single" home console, and a "single" handheld would suffice just fine. I'm so tired of the idea every gen that I'll have to buy 4 or 5 different pieces of hardware just to have to play games that catch my attention. It's ridiculous.

Most pc, 360, and ps3 games share most of their big budget games, and indie games anyways, the difference being in the fewer "exclusives" to represent each platform. Then when you look at a handheld like the 3ds, you can see a mixture of what the ds represented and what the psp represented. My question is, how long do companies really think they can squeeze profit from us like this? It's becoming a huge problem for me because EVERY new piece of hardware has some kind of game that I want to play. However like I stated, I'm becoming tired of the "collecting" aspect of this industry. My apartment is starting to look like a gaming jungle.

It would be ideal in a perfect wolrd, but the big three are greedy businesses after all. Before something like the i-phone came along, people would have to carry a phone, an mp3 player, and a gaming devise on the go. We only have "so much space" in both our coths and our homes.

What is your opinion on this sw, I'm sure a lot of people struggle with this as well.

I would love to buy just a single console and watch it release at a ridiculously high price, and then never decrease.

That would be more than fine with me, as long the ensure the quality of the hardware for said console.

I imagine a time when console hardware goes away, and maybe we'll just see software clients from Sony, MS, and Nintendo similar to Steam, and other services.

If that appeals to you, I know people that do this. They usually choose PC and then Nintendo's current console. (Chances of Nintendo loosing exclusives are very slim if impossible.)

You'd be ok with a general lack of competition in the marketplace?

Lack of competition? There's always competition. Do you think EA doesn't want the same amount of sales that activition gets from COD. If three was only "one' consoles, games would still sell. Or are you implying devs would stop developing games?

I'm talking more to do with hardware/software together. It's well known that competition is a good driving force. If you have a one-stop shop, there is going to be stagnation (for example, Live may not be as all-inclusive as it is now with no competition).

You have a point, it's too "ideal" to have this happen anyways. It just would be more convenient for us gamers.
