I don't agree with this simply because the guy who did Altair's voice was a terrible voice actor. He showed absolutely no emotion whatsoever, and it was terrible. You could tell the guy tried to get angry at a couple points but he couldn't pull it off at all. :(

I don't think Altair is that bad ass simply because he did whatever he was told. Most bad ass characters are bad ass because they do their own thing and are rebelious. It makes for a better character overall in terms of freedom and design.

Some characters are meant to be followers, but these characters are there simply because they are pawns in a grander scheme of things. This may change if that character has a revelation such as, "I'm being fooled with and used as a plot device in my master's grand scheme! I'm going to rebel and destroy my master." While Altair was a main character in Assassin's Creed, it seems that the cliffhanger is implying that Altair may not be around very much in the 2nd game, thus explaining why he was a pawn in the first place in 2 ways. He was being controlled by another main character, and he was being controlled by a ruthless villian that supposedly was good in all ways.

The story in Assassin's Creed was very good, if they would have had better voice acting on Altair, it would have been even better. Although the rest of the cast in the game was top-notch, it was just Altair, who was the main character who brought it down a bit.
