Kid Chameleon.
The player, as Kid Chameleon, progresses through a series of levels. Most levels contain a flag, which is the primary goal of each level, from which the player progresses to the next level. However, a number of teleporters throughout the game can warp the player not only to different places in the same level, but also to different levels, and sometimes to an entirely different path through the game. At the end of the game, Kid fights and defeats the final boss, Heady Metal. Kid Chameleon contains nearly a hundred levels, of which only about half are on the "main path" (traversing levels only by flags), and also counts the two-dozen smaller unnamed levels, simply called "Elsewhere". Despite the game's considerable length, there was no password system or other method of saving the game. However, both Sega Genesis Collection and the Virtual Console service allow players to save their progress mid-game.
As Kid Chameleon moves through the game's levels, he gains access to masks that transform him into different characters. Each character has different special abilities and varying amounts of hit points. The sheer amount of variety in gameplay due to the various characters is part of what gave Kid Chameleon such an addictive **** few levels repeated the same structure and they usually had specific strategies and characters to be beaten. In addition to the offensive abilities of each form, the Kid could also defeat enemies by jumping on them, although he may take damage from some enemies by doing so.
None of you are hardcore enough to compete.

Oh were on about impossible games. Driver! Presidents run.
The Europa Universalis series dosen't pull any punches.gingerdivid
yay i was going to say that :P
also the total war series and the CiV. series (also galciv) are all hardcore games
That would be Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. It was even too hardcore for the Gamespot reviewer. ;)Bigboi500

They don't make 'em hardcore like Contra anymore, a game that basically required a cheat code to even get to the end. Shout-out also goes to Battletoads.
Out of the more recent games, Ninja Gaiden Black comes to mind.
Zeliard9
Meh, i'd go for the original ninja gaiden on xbox rather than black. A game so hardcore, they had to release an easier version for all the wimps ;)
good call with battletoads, that game came close to going out the window on more than one occasion
also tetris, i can remember getting the orchestra to play (i think) but in normal mode did it actually ever end?
Most hardcore game??? Easiest question out of them all!!!
It's World of Warcraft
People sink 100s of hours into that game....some people live their entire life in it.

falcon 4.0. the manual that game was so thick you could beat a whale to death with it
doobie1975
I would also say Sonalysts Dangerous Waters.
You could run a sub with only the engine crew after you play that game. The rest of the stations you manage yourself.
Counting from any gen: Contra, Super Contra, Dungeon explorer.
This gen: Fire emblem Radiant Dawn + Hard mode = Perfection.

What are you talking about? Black is obviously the more difficult version. Hurricane packs ringing a bell? You seem to be confusing it with Sigma.
well halo 2 can be very competitive so its hardcore.
Bioshock also dosnt seem like something some one can just pick up and play plus you get many options

GEARS OF WAR online--can't use the chainsaw can't use the shotgun can't melee can't use the lancer can't use the boomshot
You can only use the longshot and maybe the torque bow but you will still be accused of exploiting some glitch.
Oh yeah and god forbid you steal somebodies kill
Don't host games either
People don't seem to complain too much about Hammer of Dawn
Desert Bus
