Fighting: Soul Calibur 2, if we're not counting Smash Brothers Melee. SFA3 otherwise.
Racing: I never have liked racing, why race when you can drive and shoot at the same time (GTA style games)
RPGs: Very tough call, there were so many good ones on the SNES and PS1...FF4-7, hard to pick between them. Other than the obvious choices, I'd rank Suikoden 2 very high, and Star Ocean 2.
FPS: Halflife2, period. All other games are just borrowing from it.
RTSs i hate, just a personal thing.
Adventures...Metroid Prime, then LoZ Wind Waker.
Flight is one of my personal favorite genres, and no game I enjoyed more than Wing Commander: Prophecy.
Action: I'm not sure this qualifies, Action is kinda a broad concept...but I have to mention Tomba for PS1.
Will add more as posts build.
Turn based Strategy: FFT, hands down.
Sandbox: GTA3, for the groundbreaking.
WRPG: Diablo 2.
Baseball: MVP Baseball 2005, mine was for GC.
Racing: Tough call because of the variety, but I'm going with Forza 2.
Shooter (arcade): Again a tough call, but I'd say Half Life 2.
Shooter (tactical): Operation: Flashpoint.
RTS: Starcraft
TBS (turn based strategy): Civilization 3
Sandbox/free-roam:Sid MeiersPirates!
WRPG: Very tough choice between Fallout, Baldurs Gate 2, Diablo, and KOTOR, but I'll say KOTOR.
JRPG: FFVII.
Stealth: Thief.
Sports: NHL 94.
Action: Zelda: OoT
Flight: Crimson Skies.
FPS: Half-Life
TPS: Max Payne 2
RTS: Rise of Nations
TBS: Civilization 4
RPG: Fallout
Advanture: Grim Fandango
Action Advanture: Majoras Mask
nothings perfect, but i have my favorites.
FPS - HL
RTS - Starcraft
RPG - FFX
Action - Ninja Gaiden
Action/Adventure - Zelda OOT
Racing - Forza 2
I think Star Wars based games should have their own genre, in which case, KOTOR would win.
Also, the perfect RPG is definitely Starcraft.
Tetris is, of course, the perfect puzzle game.

* I hear that The Metal Age is superior to The Dark Project but have not played it.foxhound_fox
Am I the ONLY gamer who played this game and absolutely hated it? Hell I played it when I was a kid and hated it, and grew up and hated it even more. Seriously and I'm a Nintendo fan what gives? Not flaming but really how come I'm the only person who played this game and absolutly hated it?

I thought you thought that JRPG's and WRPG's should be seprate?
And I'm sorry I just HAD to say this. I got this quote from the General Game Discussions Board, I wanna see your reaction.
"The Warriors was better then Double Dragon and all other 2D beat-em-ups in every way, shape, and form. The only thing Double Dragon and all those other beat-em-ups have over it is nostalgia. It's the survival of the fittest and 2D games just don't make the cut." *The user was refering to that 2D is completly inferior to 3D*

No in these best game threads it's usually in the JRPG slot *from what I've came across*
I'm not gonna flame but really I don't see what makes it so good :(
Oh well like I posted I put Odin Sphere as the best JRPG ever and I'm sure many will have disagreement. :)
Oblivion would be the best RPG I have ever played. It really is a RPG. You don't play some other character, you play whoever you want, you do what you want. On top of that the game has an excellent story and fantastic gameplay that really puts you in the shoes of your character. Isn't that was a RPG is really all about?Wasdie
Morrowind > Oblivion. Seriously.

Oblivion had more hack-n-slash then Kingdom Hearts......do you even know what that's saying?

Yeah, you don't role-play in those, but Baldur's Gate II is the best RPG out there IMO.I never played The Warriors, so I don't know what is like. But I highly doubt there's a beat 'em up out there with more depth than Guardian Heroes.
I do agree somewhat in the nostalgic remark in a way, I mean it's not that difficult to be better than Double Dragon, since it's probably the best regarded beat 'em up with the worst collision detection out there, but since it's a classic, it became part of it's charm.

Nah..Majoraru is the sexiest Taru in Vanadiel...you couldn't come close to his sexiness if you're not a Taru.
Native American-faced hume looks very natural in the tribal lookin igqira stuff, i thought...lol

Yeah I know. Let me lay it out for you:
Oblivion Graphics > Morrowind Graphics
Oblivion Combat > Morrowind Combat
Dark Brotherhood > Morag Tong
Oblivion Journal > Morrowind Journal
That is all Oblivion has on Morrowind. That is it. To be honest, I am a hardcore Elder Scrolls fan, and Oblivion's main quest felt like an expansion pack to my favorite game of all time. At least the Dark Brotherhood and The Shivering Isles rescued that game from the abyss of "meh".
Morrowind >>>> Oblivion

Hell yeah, Morrowind is better then Oblivion in like everything except Graphics.I'm not really an Elder Scrolls fan, so as an outsider I'd like to add...I got Morrowind free with a video card I bought a while back and never got into it, after trying a couple times. After 6 months of having my friend's (ex friend..) copy of oblivion, I finally found some interest, and played it for about 25 hours. got all the way thru thieves guild stuff, and got to lvl 80 marksman...

Splatterhouse is better then The Warriors......and I played Splatterhouse for the first time AFTER I played The Warriors.
I mean don't get me wrong it's an okay title, but seriously...
But oh well I guess I shouldn't take someone who claimed that Halo 1 didn't have multiplayer seriously

****Spoilers****
It wasn't the morality behind the killings that fascinated me with the Dark Brotherhood, it was the amazing storyline and incredibly fun quests that made me fall in love with it. I thought that the "purging" in particular was very compelling.
Also, the scene in which it is revealed that your past few targets were in fact high ranking DB members... well, it was beautifully done.

Well, I still have not finished the entire Morag Tong quest line yet... heck, I have yet to delve into the Morrowind world to any depth whatsoever, I only started playing it several months ago and never got back into it. One of these days I might, problem is, I don't have near enough time to play a game like Morrowind... >_>
That is unfortunate, but understandable. Morrowind requires full devotion in order for the player to truly find out what makes it so great.
