What do you think is the most radical innovation ever in gaming? Most of the innovation occurs incrementally, but every now and then (usually with the transition to a new gen of gaming) something very radical thoroughly changes the way we play games. What did so most according to you?

I think going from 2D to 3D to me represents the most iinnovative step gaming took over the last years. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this took place when going from the SNES/Genesis to the N64/Playstation gen.

Half Life's use of scripted sequences pretty much changed the FPS genre overnight.

I would say 2d-3d is probably one of the biggest. And if it was a few years down the road and it was just being announced i would say onlive.

NielsNL

Instead of the displays drawing pixels, they drew lines.

Basically, it would do away with rasterization and allow near infinite 'resolution'

kind of like scalable vector graphics, but in hardware.

It died.

I don't know of anything that uses it now in days.

Which makes this one very sad.

err no... Thief was the first true stealth game. MGS isnt even a true stealth game. To compare, thief = racesim mgs = mariokart. But other than that, yes, MGS kicks ass and became legendary.

I stopped playing thief when I got to the zombies that kept coming back after you shot them. They annoyed me tremendously...

Why would that be innovative? LAN multiplayer was already invented. Online multiplayer is just the exact same thing, except that its a bigger network. Anyone could figure that out, it was a completely natural step forward.

Wasn't the first processor more innovative then, which allowed computergaming in the first place?

Its not like you couldn't do 3D without a graphics card anyway...

Not true.

I don't think he means processor in the sence of "Something that can do math"

but processor as in CPU/Programable array.

I mean, pong is a game, but it can't do anything else.

Got a point there I guess. Still it feels like ´cheating´ to call the CPU an innovation :P

The processor is required for every single innovation though. And its not like a 3D card is required to do 3D graphics. Nor would it be able to render 3D graphics without a processor.

Yes but think about where gaming would be without graphics cards. Every console since dreamcast is using 3d cards for a reason so does gaming pc's are using dedicated vga's since 96 for a reason. A cpu alone couldnt do something like crysis. In fact a cpu alone cant make something like WOW. Why you think they use integrated graphics cards at low end system instead of using only CPU's( which would save you $20-30) for rendering if Cpus's are so capable of graphics rendering?

on the console front i think the biggest changes in the controller came from the nes, the N64 and now the wii. the nes introduced the fundimentals of the modern controller. d-pad and buttons (before it was a keyboard or a joystick). it was initally laughed at as a brain dead simpletons toy but thats history for ya. the N64 was not the first to use the analogue sticks but it was the controller to make it stick. and of course there the wii which seperates the controller (again not the first time i think but the first to make it stick) and allows the hands to move indepentently. in terms of game design on the consoles....the move from 2d to 3d was a big shift for devs. it wasnt easy moving loved 2d franchises into 3d and in most cases they were a disaster. hardware wise...obhiously there have been huge leaps and bounds in horsepower on consoles but i think alot fo the old thinking behind console design remains. ram remains in divided pools in 2/3 of the consoles this gen. the CPU and GPU still work very closely together...its not a case of the GPU doing all the graphics work and the CPU doing everything else and consoles..like always.....never seem to have quite enough ram. i think the biggest modern shift was the inclusion of a HDD as standard in consoles. this inclusion has had big effects on the way devs both do business and develop their games. next gen i think we will see a very different type of architecture. i think consoles will follow PCs and change form having highly specialised hardware to having just a crap load of processors. the processors in the consoles though will be streamlined to keep costs down. thats my speculation for today anyway :P on the PC front....well standard support for a mouse was great. many moons ago games used to just use the keyboad and ignore the mouse. the PC hasnt really changed in control scheme though since. directX was definately a help for devs with getting games working on the PC. before devs had to write code for lots of different hardware which was a pain. directX 6-7 was when MS really got the finger out. XP/2000 was also great. it wasnt necesarily innovative but it finally made windows stable-ish. ME was a disaster and 98 was also quite unreliable. when XPSP1 came out..thats when joe public could get PCs with much more confidence.

The_Brodeo
You are right that PC online wasn't like Xbox Live back then because Xbox Live was more inferior to PC online than it is now. If you think Xbox live was better when it initially released compared to PC online than you clearly never played any good games online. Matter of fact I would even go as far as to say that Gamespy Arcade was superior to the first generation of Xbox live in every way.
