360 owners are hardocre gamers that buy software. Publishers/Developers are taking notice. Recent news of EA developing primarily for 360 first is a good example.

I think Sony is in more trouble than people realise. Console sales have picked up slightly, but they are still not selling games. Look at this list of Million sellers. You can't tell me its only because Microsoft had a year head start. I guarantee xbox360 had more than 2 million sellers a year into its life. Look at Wii, it is at least respectable.

Actually, Sony's strategy is not to make money on their console sales but to make up the money they lose from console production with software sales....

Why is selling consoles so important? If your a little slow I'll answer that question for you. They want to sell a lot of consoles so that they have a large install base to sell software too. Software makes the money, not hardware. Thats been true of consoles for the last 20 years. The only reason selling a lot of consoles is so important is because it leads to more software sales. XBOX360 software sales are through the roof. In NA it is outslling Wii and PS3 software combined.

I think the point, though, is that Sony has no software sales right now and therefore not only does that hurt them in the eyes of developers, but it also hurts SOny financially.

The problem with that logic is that things can change. They may NOT...but anything is still possible. There is no doubt that the 360 has an amazing library right now. BUt one thing people are consistently failing to look at or think about, is why the 360 is NOT selling any better than the original Xbox did. Why aren't more people rushing out to get the 360?

Personally, I think it is a very strong sign that the general gaming market is still waiting to see what happens with the PS3. Let's be honest. If you exclude the handful of us gaming nerds from the market...you still have millions of potential gamers who don't care about AAA or how many copies of a game gets sold.

I'm not saying that people WAITING for the PS3 will actually end up getting the PS3. But I think it is absolutely undeniable that the majority of people are certainly waiting for something before jumping into next gen. And if the 360 isn't appealing to them now...I don't know what else could be the reason aside from the PS3. The $399 sku is going to be the real deciding factor I believe. If it doesn't help Sony, then nothing will...period. If it DOES help though, then that means improved sales and developers will come back as more console sales = more game sales.

Like I said, right now anything is possible. No list of games is going to change that. If it could, it would have already.

Yes, but nintendo is doing fine. Since 90% of wii software sold is first party and they actualy make money on each console sold.

I agree. For example, what if Sony sold 10 Billion consoles and only 50,000 games this holiday season. Answer: They would be completely bankrupt and out of business. Only reason hardware numbers are important is because it leads to software sales.

That achievement excuse is kinda lame, so lets look at the facts.

1 - 360 hastwice the consoles sold. Obviously this would mean much more possible sales. For sake of arguement lets say were talking about multiplat games, because if your buying a 360 exclusive your buying it because its on 360 and not on PS3 not for achievements. For multiplat games we will just assume were talking about someone who has a PS3 and 360 Which is going to be a very low relative number because out of if 6 mil PS3s are sold and 12 mil 360s to have any large amount of people who own both is unreasonable i'd say thats only 500k-1mil people and thats probably more than there really are.

2 - What might make me pick one over the other? Well If Hardcore gamers buy more software and most people who own both are hardcore, and hardcore xbox gamers have live, would you not take the better online service into consideration?

3 - Personally i like the 360 controller much better. It is a crappy controller for d-pad games, but there is a specific controller for that.

4- The better version; Almost all multiplats are either better on the 360 or first on the 360. ex Oblivion probably better on the PS3 but i bought it when it came out before anyone knew of a PS3 version.

5 - The videogame business is a Razor-razor blade business. What i mean is that they make or lose a certain amount on every game consolesold and they make the real money on software. If they make an averagve of $12 per game and they have 10 million consoles sold and their customers average 10 games, that is significantly more profit than $12 profit 5 million consoles 5 average games per console, so if anyone tells you Software sales don't matter, i guarantee that is what MS and Sony are going for coming into this "war"

if Buying a game FOR achievements. I dont know about you but why isnt NBA 2k6 up there if thats true? I've never bought a game for achievements.

I think that is why they posted such a huge loss this quarter, and why they removed BC for the $399 model of PS3. They are selling consoles but no games.

I heard that there is a stupid surplus in this thread. I'm here to clean it up.

The CONSOLE that sells the most CONSOLES is the winner of the CONSOLE war. The CONSOLE that sells the most has a much greater probability of selling the most games. You move right back to the software sales being in direct correlation with CONSOLE sales. If it was based on software then it wouldn't be system wars. It would be software wars. In which case LZ:OoT wins. Or Windows...

Microsofts strategy isn't working well because they are selling at a lose and intend to make it up in software sales. It is working because they were the first to market and held a monopoly for a year. Lack of competition does amazing things to your bottom line.

The strategy that PS3 has used is a forced move. Their target market and their product don't match up at all. If you wanted to release a consle that pushes technology you need to sell to the early adoptors and you don't skimp out on charging a premium. You can price skim later...

The 360 and PS3 both have lackluster business strategies and are reaping the benefits of their mediocre attempts.
