With Super Mario RPG coming out on Virtual Console today I just wanted to rant alittle about the Wii's most under-rated feature. THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!!
As of today there are 250 games on the Virtual Console covering multiple systems (NES, Sega Master System, Turbo-grafx 16, Genesis, SNES, Neo Geo, and Nintendo 64)! From RPG's to Platformers, from SHMUPS to Strategy Games, from Fighting Games to Puzzle Games, there really is something for everyone. And no matter how hardcore of a gamer you are, I doubt anyone has owned all those systems and played all the great games for each of those system, not to mention that some of the games are imports that never came to North America. Also it's current rate, there will be about 100 more VC games added to the Virtual Console every year!
Alot of these older games, especially NES games that didn't allow you to save are made so much better now that you can pause the game at any point and the Wii will save that state so you can hop right back on later on. Hell, I think that feature made Metroid for the NES a much more enjoyable experience. Not to mention, it's awesome for RPG's when you aren't near a save point but have to stop playing.
The Virtual Console can be a lot of fun for just about anybody, but it is particularly awesome for hard core gamers because it lets us play great games from different stages in the history of gaming. In fact I like going to retrogaming mags and download old issues of EGM and Gamepro and see all the hype surround a certain game and then I can just go on to VC and buy the game for a few dollars.
Some Complain about the Price and I think these people are crazy. $5-$10 dollars for epic games of years past are a fair price in my opinion. I mean, I think it's way better then $10 dollars you pay on PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, and Wii Ware for the typical castle defense games or shallow puzzle/card games. For a measly 8 dollars you can get Phantasy Star II (Genesis) or Breath of Fire II (SNES). We're talking about long meaty rpg's that will give you more hours of entertainment then the vast majority of Current Gen Games.
To address, another concern that is highly overblown is the storage issue. I have a 2GB SD Card in my Wii and I buy pretty much every VC game that I want and have a lot of room left over. In fact, you can fit every wii VC game released on a 2GB SD Card. You do not have to delete and redownload games as some people try to claim, if the game is stored on your SD card you do have to swap it to the Wii's Channel Interface but that is not a big deal at all.
In conclusion, the Wii Virtual Console is one of my favorite things of this gen. For all the promises that Nintendo fails to deliver on, the Virtual Console has really turned into the library of gaming history that many people had hoped for.
