CIG has been working with 3lateral to create this technology. The artist for CIG help do the assets with 3lateral doing the rigging. There already a character creator for this.

3.0 production schedule, in the "Completed Branch" - Finalized delivery of ALL facial assets from 3Lateral

Yeah that's misleading, that's not Star Citizen.

Same company, but that demo is not Star Citizen.

Honestly I would be more excited about an interesting story and campaign. I am getting an impression that this game will be visually sublime bit with a subpar story. I need dark, mysterious atmosphere, like Dark Souls in space, but right now the game looks more and more like a Nasa space faring simulator. This not what makes games cool. I will take cool art style and good plot over sleek graphics and realism any day.

Another my concern is that every time they come up with some new technology, it delays the game for another 6 months lol. As they probably need to migrate everything to that technology, then get it tested, etc. It's all translated in delays, delays and more delays.

That's exactly what Squadron 42 will be with it's single-player story campaign, it will be a mix of Apocalypse Now meets Heart of Darkness in a space setting with one of the most impressive cast ever assembled for an entertainment project (that's movies and video-games included).

These guys were contracted by CIG years ago. They have exceptional talent of making use of facial capture data. They did all of the cutscenes for Ryse. CIG contracted these guys to basically do all of the fine tuning of the animations and getting them to a useable state in-game rather than hiring people to do that internally for the dozens of faces they mocapped.

They have an internal team that can do them now, but probably not to the same quality as this company and since Squardon 42 was supposed to be out this year, they didn't have time to build up that internal department after their primary motion capture shoot.
