Last evening the official release date for "Twisted Metal" had been announced and it is now known that it will be released next year on Valentine's Day (February 14th for those of you who don't know when Valentine's Day is). Originally the released date was October 4th, this new release datefor "Twisted Metal" gives the developers "Eat Sleep Play" more than four extra months to develop and further polish the game.
The last "Twisted Metal" game to be released was Twisted Metal: Head on - Extra Twisted Edition for the PlayStation 2 which was released February 5th of 2008.
Eat Sleep Playis composed of many of theoriginal developers for the franchise. It has been said that this entry will return to the model of "Twisted Metal: Black" which was the most criticallypraised of the series as well as being one of the most highly reviewed games for the PlayStation2 hereon GameSpot.
What IS Twisted Metal anyway?
For those of you who don't know, Twisted Metal is a car combat game. Car combat in a nut-shell is a type of game where you drive around in vehicles armed with differentweaponsshooting each other in an attempt to blowthe other(s) up.
The history of Twisted Metal:
Many people may not know this but "Twisted Metal" is actually Sony's oldest video game franchise (I imagine a common misconception is that "Crash Bandicoot" is Sony's oldest franchise). The original "Twisted Metal" came out November 5th, 1995 as one of the original PlayStation's first titles. It was met with mixed reviews and had an average of 66.88% on GameRankings.com (there is no review on GameSpot for it). "Twisted Metal 2" came out Halloween of 1996 and was met with much better reviews, gettingan average of 86% on GameRankings.com(while only managing 50% on PC) and scored an 8.8 on GameSpot (the PC version would only score a 6.4 here). Later "SingleTrac",the-thendevelopers for Twisted Metal, and Sony would fight over SingleTrac's contract (rhyme unintended) and with the issue being unresolved Sony would hand over the development studios of "Twisted Metal" over to their in-house developer, "989 Studios".
Since "SingleTrac" owned the game engine of the two Twisted Metals the new developer's entries into the franchise would be significantly different. On Halloween of1998 "Twisted Metal III"was released."Twisted Metal III" received fairly poor reviews getting an average of 48.97% on GameRankings.com and a 4.7 from GameSpot."Twisted Metal 4" was released Halloween of 1999."Twisted Metal 4" received much better reviews than the last game but was still only considered an average game. It averaged 68.04% and got a 7.1 here.
Many members of "SingleTrac" left to form "Incognito Entertainment" and then signed with Sony to develop "Twisted Metal: Black" which was released June 18th of 2001. This entry was meant with very high reviews averaging an 88.52% and a 9.5 from GameSpot.
On March 24th of 2005 "Twisted Metal: Head On" was released on the PlayStationPortable and averaged 78.82% and got an 8.5 here. Later the Extra Twisted Edition would be released on the PS2and would average a73.56% and received a 7.5 from here.
Now "Eat Sleep Play", a company that is composed of many of the franchise's original developers is working on the new entry in the series.
The features of "Twisted Metal" currently include, but are probably not limited to:
- A campaign mode
- 4-player split-screen multiplayer
- 16 player online play
- Let you play split-screen AND online at the same time.
- An online"Nuke Mode" where the goal is to destroy the opposing team's metal statue that is being carried by a helicopter
- New selectable vehicles currently known of are Reaper, Roadboat, Death Warrant, Vermin, an 80s Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Meat Wagon, and Talon (which is a helicopter)
Well System Wars, what is your hype for Twisted Metal?
