Im sure there has been a game for everyone that was a real nice surprise, something you didn't have any expectations for and ended up enjoying.

For me it has to be GTI Club+ the PSN game, it's out on December 4th but after playing the demo atleast 20 times I know that this will be the nicest surprise for me this year. I completely forgot the name of the game and didn't know what it was going to be when I played the demo, then I got a huge feeling of nostalgia hit and realised I was playing a revamped version of the arcade racer I loved so much all those years ago.

So what's your nicest gaming surprise of 2008, and why?

Lost Odyssey and Banjo: Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. I really expected both games to disappoint me in the end, but they ended up being some of my favorites.

Dead Space. I gave no attention to this game and after I read some of the reviews I decided to pick this game up and it did not disappoint.

I had seen people bashing Fable II's story, but I ended up having a profound emotional experience at the end of it. I take it to mean Lionhead and Molyneux succeeded with one of their goals.

Alone In The Dark: Inferno was surprisingly good, especially after the panning the other versions got. It's got so many great, fun ideas and it's hard not to get drawn into the cinematic spectacle of it all. It dared to try something new in a stagnating genre and I applaud it for that.

Sonic Unleashed. I thought the werehog parts were going to be trash, but they turned out to be fairly solid portions of the game.

Same thing with me. The game looked good. But when I played it I was amazed with how polished it was.

The Chrono Trigger port for the DS.

I also found out that the freeware game La Mulana was amazing. Sadly, after my XP computer died, my new Vista machine couldn't read the .sgt format the music is in. :(

It have been a more pleasant surprised if Square had properly priced it.

What was wrong with the price? I've seen the SNES carts go for double on Ebay.

Mirror's Edge was an adventure for me. I was intrigued by the game for quite some time ..... but then I played the demo and didn't like it much and when I saw the mixed reviews I was skeptical. I decided to give it a rent and didn't like it at first ..... but then it grew on me and I was enjoying it. It was a pleasant surprise in the end.

I recommend renting it and giving it a shot.

I was skeptical of Dead Space at first, but after glowing reviews and positive feedback I found it to be surprisingly good. I haven't been that scared since Doom 3.

Dead Space, easily. I remember watching previews for the game thinking "it's too slow, it's going to be boring." It's easily one of my favourites this year.

So, is the DS version rare? It's a thirteen year old SNES game. All they did was port it and throw in some minor extras. It's in no pushing the DS limits. In every area the game has been bested by other modern day DS games except maybe gameplay, but it's not like that area of the game was reworked or anything. So I fail to see how this game is deserving to be ten dollars more than a brand new Nintendo DS game. Hell, I'd say even thirty dollars would have been pushing it.

Probably dead space. I picked it up but never really played it because of school then GeoW2, Fable2, LBP, R2, L4D all came out and when I had time to play, I didn't really touch dead space. Now 3 days ago, I tried it out again and now I'm on the 7th chapter. It's been getting more playing time than any of those other games apart from NBA2k9 now.
