Mass Effect, Crysis, Bioshock, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and Assassin's Creed say hi.

Plus sequels can be radically different, like Splinter Cell: Conviction has little in common with any previous Splinter Cell game other than the characters.

when someone does something that you like, and then promises that 2 years from now, they'll do that same thing only better...you're gonna want that next thing.

There's a lot of truth to saying games get a moniker just to have one. For example: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas. The whole "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six" thing is old as beans, they could lop that all off, build the same game, and it would have been fine. Nor is it really meaningful to complain about "Final Fantasy XIII" when it's a radically different game from FF XII, which wasn't anything like FF XI, which was an MMORPG while FF X was a JRPG, et cetera.

And yes, there are a lot of new franchises being started. Gears of War? Mass Effect? Too Human?

i think people are forgetting million sellers dead rising, lost planet, motorstorm, resistance, gears of war and saints row.

all great games, all sold well, all first in their series.

That's not really true. If it were, a game like Gears of War wouldn't have sold well.

Games like Uncharted, Haze, Heavenly Sword, Mass Effect, Bioshock, No More Heroes, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Crackdown etc would not be in development, if nobody cared.

It's understandable that people would be excited about sequals since they already know what to expect from the publisher (assuming it's the same production team). With new IP you really don't know if it's just media hype or the team really has a solid game production on their hands. So many new IP games get hyped so much and end up sucking that many gamers are pretty jaded when it comes to those titles. I'm sure if you made a list of the most anticpated new IP coming up about 1/2 those games would suck.

Who cares. Most games with new characters are just the same as some other game with some dude we don't know. For example, most FPS's mentioned in this thread are just wannabe Halo/Gears hybrids.

How do you think sequels are started? They aren't just sucky games and then the sequel is the best game in the world...
