I agree with you, this of course may be because I haven't played too many current-gen games tho.  But I have played Gears and the bosses were underwhelming, I mean Sergeant Raam (final guy) wasn't all that intimidating, that Locust that ran through everything was a lot more awesome.

But yeah, not many games have that visceral feeling of accomplishment anymore.  I suppose Ninja Gaiden would, but that game is more of an annoyance due to the difficulty, though I do plan to beat it someday.  FFXII bosses were easy and underwhelming, though they looked cool.  TP bosses were easy, but the last battle was pretty cool.  Nothing really gives me that sense of accomplishment anymore...its sad

FFXII bosses easy, dunno at the end the bosses (not the final boss) but the optional ones, and even some related in story lines were pretty tough none the less. You battle a monster with a few million hp and at the end when its close to die, he beguns to attak 3-4 times before you even have time to cure urself  And lets not even talk about Yiazmat (whatever his name is)

I think the few next gen (current gen) jrpgs that are coming out really need to step it up. I was able to 3 hit KO the "Ultimate Baddy" in Enchanted Arms. ....... THAT IS UNNACEPTABLE.

True, but I'm expecting big things from Mass Effect and Bioshock. Lair looks pretty promising too.

Oh yeah, I just finished the main quest and I was kinda tired of the game so I said who cares about the side quests and such for now.  But when I go back...wow...a friend brought over his strategy guide when I had finished and I was looking at the Espers to get and some of the big bad guys and yeah I don't think I could beat them.  But maybe it was hte battling that made it underwhelming; I love the system its just that it seemed a little too automatic to make me feel like I was actually beating it.  Oh well...still a great game (though I wish the story dealt with the characters more instead of politics...)

If your talking about the satisfaction one gets from beating a really hard boss, well I got that from beating the Final Boss in Sonic Wii...also finsihing some of the later operations in trauma center were pretty satisfying.

Well yeah so far no game has produced good bosses this gen.... but really no console game has produced anything but casual oversimplified gameplay either. Resistance was a decent step with unique weapons that took some skill to use. The Ubisoft shooter junk has done nothing but add a coat of shine to the graphics while Gears relys solely on "cool" death animations and good graphics to be popular. Once you realize there are about 5 preset things you can do and the chainsaw death is seen for the 1000th time, the core game you're left with is nothing better than average. At least definately not in the same league as Halo:CE or Half-Life like the score suggests.

GOW2 I can say with full confidence gave me that feeling multiple times. Beating the endurance run on Titan after trying soo many times...i swear with a milimetre of health left and a cyclops to kill, i almost had a heart attack. I was so pumped full of adrenanline and my heard was going soo fast. OOPS, next gen you say?Hmm. Resistance online. I've alot of that intensity going on, but nothing single-player...yet. Gotta get my Elite first!I think the first time I ever felt that was when i beat the first Y wing level in Rogue Sqaudron for N64. I couldn't walk for a while and felt like I just killed a lion with my bear hands.

Just a thought. is there a game where you beat the enemy by intelligence rather than an endgame boss battle. e.g. putting things into play during a game to foil the enemies plan, and see it all come together in the end?

zelda, ALL zelda bosses cant be killed just by swinging ur sword

u have to look for its weakpoint, then make the weakpoint vulnerable, then atack the weak point FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE (sry i just had 2)

thats part of  what makes zelda soo special

Maybe you're getting older now? You don't get those same jitters. I've also lost that feeling come the end of a game, but it pops up slightly every now and then. Gears of War's finale and the conclusion to Resistance: Fall of Man both had my heart fluttering a bit, though they didn't even come close to what I was feeling back in 1997 the first time I fought Sephiroth. Still, at least it gets something out of me. Can't wait for a game like Halo 3, Lair or (because it's an RPG) Blue Dragon to get that full end game feeling out of me with a "Holy Crap....this is it" moment.

Part of the problem (especially with RPGs) is accessibility. I mean if FFXIII was up to the standards of the people here, SE would have instantly eliminated at least half their consumer base. Developers have to create games that you are able to beat with the minimum amount of effort, ie you only do the main quest and as fast as possible. That was why Oblivion had scaleable AI, the problem was once you reached a certain level your stats made you unstoppable.

Samething with other RPGs, chances are most of the people here try and do every single quest possible, which is going to dramatically increase your characters level compared to if you solely played the main quest. So while the developer has created a boss that would be challenging for an avarage gamer at level 10, people here are above average gamers at level 20. I think scalable enemies will be a viable solution once someone gets the balance right.

Half-Life.

yep HL 2

The bosses in Half-Life required a lot more thinking than HL2. In HL2, it just comes down to shooting the boss to death. In Half-Life, the bosses required you to kill the bosses using the things around you (ie: luring a giant alien into a death trap)

Yea man your right! I remember i felt this same feeling after beating the first Devil may cry game OMG Nightmare was the hardest boss ever!! And beating "The Boss" and "The End" in MGS3! I really think online multiplayer is taking away from that feeling. Dont get me wrong I love online play, but beating hard bosses just doesnt seem as exciting anymore

What made me excited was the ending of Halo: Combat Evolved. I was afraid I wasn't going to make it to the ship in enough time... but just making it within a couple of seconds. Oh the glory of beating Halo on legendary. :)

TP had the "I did it" feel to it.  It's also in the Pokémon games when you beat the Elite 4 for the first time through.

I think you can count on Metroid Prime 3 for a challenging end boss.
