Load times

I was playing Witcher 3 and the load time was so atrocious (1 min+) I had to surf the internet or use my phone to pass the time, and it reminded me of Fallout 4 witch had the same problem. I thought if I got a super powerful PC I could wait not as long.

Anyone feel the same way?

Loading times is normally addressed with a faster hard-drive. SSD does a pretty good job. If you have a PS4 a SSD may help. But I hate loading times.

An SSD is definitely an amazing thing if you got the money for it. If I'm not mistaken, you can put an SSD in a PS4 if that's what you're gaming with.

@Sweetbackhair: From the comparison videos the difference isn't as dramatic as on PC.

SSD is not as expensive as it used to be. You can pickup some for less than $100.

@Juub1990: I think I saw a comparison video with PS4 and GTA V. I believe you save a few seconds and like you said, isn't such a big deal.

PC gaming is awesome, get on that shit.

Having an SSD and HDD at the same time is the bomb; not only that but for games that have obnoxious elements that waste time you can also mod out parts, like MGSV's helicopter rides and The Fade from Dragon Age: Origins.

@Pedro: you're right on that, I got my 240 GB SSD for about $60 on sale. A SanDisk brand too which I recommend.

Yeah that's one good thing about PC gaming, if there's something about a game you don't like, there likely is a mod for it. Bit of a hassle though.

I'll probably get SSD for PS4, looks like it can save about 30% load time.

My specs are:

5930K
Asus Sabertooth X99
16GB Corsair Vengance
SLI GTX980Ti
1200W Superflower PSU
1x 500GB SSD Samsung 850 Evo
1x 1TB SSD Samsung 850 Evo
Corsair Air 540
Corsair K70 RGB
Corsair H110GTi

The monitor is 30in and a resolution of 2560x1080. Its a nice monitor but the game support on older titles is patchy. I'm playing DR3 at the moment and there is no SLI support and it only runs at 1080p.

That's a beast rig you got. A 980 Ti should be plenty to max out DR3 even at 1440p. You have a 21:9 monitor so support is much more limited. I went 1440p myself with a nice 27'' and I have yet to come across a game that doesn't support it.

How is SLI support for you? It's been working almost flawlessly for me.

Load times have been awful this gen. I remember Ridge Racer letting you play Galaga to pass the time while it loaded on PS1, I'd love it if more devs made more of loading screens like that. Make them more interactive or something. Bloodborne caught hell for having minute long load screens when it launched, now these long load screens are so common it's not even worth mentioning anymore.

Hilariously this didn't happen more because Namco Bandai had a patent on games during loading screens.

I can't be bothered with PC gaming. It's a huge pain in the ass to build a PC, configure settings, etc. just to get the game to work. As someone with a busy schedule, I am a big fan of plug-in and play with consoles.

SSD don't mean much for consoles. For PC it makes a big difference for the OS at least.

I get to the Win 10 login in under 10 seconds from pushing the power button.

SSD is pretty awesome, and there are different tiers of SSDs. The regular SSDs should be sufficient for most users, and they are fairly cheap to get. Then there are the monster PCIE SSDs that cost a truck, but are significantly faster than even regular SSDs.

SSD would totally mean a lot for consoles, it'll straight up provide faster loading. Of course, consoles will not get packed with SSDs in the foreseeable future since they are still more expensive than HDDs.

They should spend more time reducing the loading times than adding to it by having interactive games in between.

Yeah so on my PC 95% of the games have less than 5 second load times. And that is sweet. Once you get used to that the console experience is rough. And if I die in a game and it takes over 5 seconds to start playing again, I will probably quit playing the game because I don't like waiting anymore. That was not an issue until I got used to this PC :P

Absolutely, but until they're gone or so short they aren't worth complaining about, I'd like something to do rather than look at bullshots and watch the little dealy go round and round.

I liked how they used it in Splatoon, to cover the waiting time when you get into an online lobby.

I believe its still worth complaining about. Reducing loading times is not an easy task. I am currently relying on reduced texture sizes to reduce loading to about less than 5 seconds and some of those seconds are transitions to mask the loading so that it appears even shorter. Because I am so against long loading I will be trying figure an effective method for offloading and loading assets at a constant rate possibly facilitating a load free gaming experience. We have more memory than we had before and we are using more memory to but devs need to start investing some R&D time in data management.

for me load times are more a problem in need of fixing then frames per sec, resolution, screen tears,graphics,etc..load times suck and today should be no issue.

@VanDammFan: Give over. Load times have never been less of an issue than they are at this moment. Don't be such a drama queen. We used to pop a tape in and actually plan an activity to do whilst we waited for it because it would not be worth waiting there for. You could make a cup of tea or play a game of solitaire (the physical kind) while you waited, for a fucking undetailed 2D platformer consisting of a few screens which did not scroll.

Now there are worlds miles and miles in depth with only one loading screen which will take you, ooh, 20 seconds. That's a big issue? Only if you are a tart.

SSD for my OS and a regular 7200RPM HDD for my games/media files seems to do the trick nicely. My next computer, i'll just rock SSDs, as they're coming down in price.

@Pedro: You don't get it do you? There are no long loading times. None. No game subjects you these days to long loading times. This is a none issue today. I have Witcher 3 on console and PC. They both load up incredibly fast and with no issues at all considering the scale of the game. You don't have to wait in any real sense of the word.

This is another example of people bitching and moaning about everything.

@DocSanchez: Bloodborne had terribly long load-times at release (not sure if they fixed it at all)... When you died, you were subjected to around 40-60 seconds of load times IIRC. Considering other games have substantially less, i'd call those long load times.

Load times are not an issue on PC, if you have enough Ram and good hard drives. For example if I enter or exit a home in Skyrim, it takes just 1 second to load. On Consoles, it took several seconds. Same goes for other games. Games load much faster on PC.

@lundy86_4: Honestly this is the biggest drama queen non-issue I have ever read on here.

11 long minutes some of those ZX spectrum games took to load. 5 if you were lucky. And they weren't gigantic worlds. And patches didn't help them one bit.

@DocSanchez: Technology has advanced, so I don't see a reason to compare load times today to that of years ago. Of course things loaded slower back then. However, I absolutely see the reason you can criticize long load-times in comparison to today's games... Especially if they are similar in things like scale and graphics.

Clearly it's a difference of opinion, and i've been gaming for years myself... I'll still criticize shitty loading times.

Why you are literally making shit up? You have to wait up to a minute with The Witcher 3 when you die or teleport. Loading times for the average game ranges from 10-30 seconds. Bloodborne was all over the place. Halo 5 is about 30 seconds. Forza averages 40-50 seconds. That is a lot of wasted time. You can say you don't care but to pretend that loading times are practically non-existent is foolish.
