Although it is a unconfirmed rumor, more and more signs point to SONY releasing a 40 GB 400 dollar PS3 by the Holidays. IF this is true, then IMO, this would be the smartests sony has been so far. When released, the PS3 was constantly ridiculled for its price. 600 dollars or even 500 dollars is just too much for most people. But 400 dollars may jsut be the right place.

Look at it this way, a 360 Elite costs more than 400 dollars, and the 400 dollar PS3 would have everything that would have (HDMI Port) but it wont have the 120GB memory. But it would be more reliable than 360 hardware is. Also with the PS3, you would get the ability to play HD Blu-Ray movies and have Wifi. Something you would have to pay extra for on 360 Elite. (Note: you cant do Blu-ray on 360, you have to buy the HD-DVD add on)

So if, and most likely When, this happens, it should help sony Considerably, all they need now is games.

The smartest thing to do would have been NOT to release the PS3 at 699.99 Canadian. (dont know the american price).

However, the $400 PS3 would sell well, but its not enough.

It's more them admitting to making a too-expensive console.

Smart? Maybe. It will get some consoles out there but it wont make them a dime in the short run. They are going to rely on the insurance division's IPO to make up for the losses they are going to see from selling at such a loss.

Yeah, this is one of the first good steps Sony has made to correct the blunder of a launch that was the PS3. They should never have dropped the 20GB in my opinion.

It's the smartest thing so far, that isn't saying much however. Too little too late.

Sony's probably gonna cut off the gigs to 20, have virtually no backward's comatability, and probably no Wi-fi. It still won't help sales much.

well they had to get rid of it. it had the emotion chip in it. Which i think is hilarious because that was another tech fact that Sony was bragging the Xbox 1.5 had to use emulation to get backwards compatibility. Ahhhh silly Sony.

its not a smart move at all, it just shows that they're desperate. Even if you're a cow you have to see this, this is the fourth sku for the PS3, they didn't get it right the first time, not the second, and now it's the third. With the introduction of another model it just shows that they're grasping for straws.

And introducing a new sku is desperate in their sense because its a lower end model where as not the same of the Xbox360 elite which is a higher end model. If you fail to see the difference in that logic, your fault.

Since my brother is moving out this year, I was selling him my premium 360 and Wii.

I think i'll get a PS3 with the money. Although I have loved my Xbox 360 up to this point, I still enjoy God of War, Socom, Final Fantasy and other franchises more. Sony has the games I want, I just wish they weren't so cocky thinking they could get away with a $500-$600 console.

I guess that would mean im a cow right? But first and foremost I am a gamer, and even though I love the Playstation brand, im not going to starve myself of games because of brand loyalty.

Then why not put off getting a PS3 until one of those sequels comes out? It will be at least a year for any of those titles.

Isn't Socom: Confrontation supposed to be released in November? I hope that didn't also get delayed.

If it did, then I might just wait longer. Doesn't really bother me, Mass Effect will keep me busy.

All the $399 PS3 is the admission by Sony that the biggest reason the PS3 has been so slow out the gate is its laughable price tag! Im sorry, I dont care if BluRay and WiFi are built in. The average consumer simply sees a price tag and then they go from there. Heck, most households dont even have a HDTV in them to take advantage of BluRay playback yet!

A price drop is nice and all, but there is still something that Sony is missing here...Game recognition! Kids out there know who Mario, Zelda and Master Chief are. Where is the game that kids can draw a relation to for the PS3? The Wii and 360 are going to sell by the boat loads this holiday season because of games like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Halo 3.

So at the end of the day, the potential $399 price point is a move in the right direction for Sony, but they still need the games to entice the casual gamer to buy the console. I know if I were Sony, Id be plastering Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted ads all over the TV right now!!!

To make it as cheap as possible to make. The EE isnt in the 80GB model, either.

To reduce manufacturing costs considerably, that's how there will be a 400$ model.

You honestly think the Average Consumer is going to think like that. No, there not. THere going to see a 400 dollar PS3. There not going to know about the Emotion chip or anything like that.

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony reducing prices when the good games like Ratchet are starting to come out, is a good a move IMO.

Although with a larger installed base: many of these delays might have not happened as the devs would see more $$ to be had then what the sitchy is now.

Tbh, now that I think about it, I may even bite if Sony comes out with a $400 PS3. For $400 I can play Warhawk, HAZE and Uncharted plus watch the occasional BluRay movie. Im a hardcore Lem for certain, but for $400 even I would have to bend on that one!!!
