a lot of people are saying that the ps3 has a lot of power that hasn't been tapped yet, and some people estimated that only about 20% of the ps3's power has been used. So, I was just wondering what you guys think of the ps3's "potential".

i dont believe the 20% figure for one second. sony said the same thing about the PS1 and 2 at the same stage of their lives. if the other 80% was tapped by the end of their lives and all they accolplished was graphics that were only a bit better then id be disgusted.
as for potential? its certainly a very powerful machine and we will certainly seem improvements as time goes by. will it be revolutionary? nah. if any revolution happens due to sheer horse power then itll happen on PC as usual. were still going to see some cracking games on the system though.
If you look at it mathematically, it's quite ridiculous:
They've said the PS3's potential is limitless ie infinite.
Then they said games are only using 20% of its potential.
One of these is false since 20% of infinity is still.... infinity.

There's a difference between figuratively speaking and making a real statement. In this situation, "infinite" would be "huge".

Whereas the PS3 has untapped potential, the Gamecube 1.5 - I mean the Wii has already hit it's peak.
But whatever do you mean? The wiimote has so many more gameplay possibilities left. A decent fps hasnt even been made yet tailored for the wii, metroid prime may change that.
But sadly yes, the wii doesn't have tEh CeLLz.......bu bu bu teH ceLLZ!!!111!!!!

It will take some time like the PS2 , the only real 128 bit machine from its generation with monster powerz according to Sony at that time that still hasn't realized its full potential now , i say about 20 + years before it will really surpass the 360 .
Look at the Atari 2600 , only now developers discovered it was really capable of a 100 % arcade perfect Pac man
On a serious note , there are no hidden powers .
Live with it !
I'm going to say that the Xbox 360 and PS3 games will advance in graphics and overall quality at relatively the same pace. No matter how much the PS3 games will improve and yes I am completely supporting that they will, so will the X360 games continue to do so. NO console ever peaks in just the 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd year. This is a principle seen ion every generation.
And a great example of this is God of War on the PS2. Heralded as a graphical achievment for that platform and the 1st game to very nearly equal Xbox calibur visuals - a that game came out SIX years after the console's launch, very near the end of it's life spane before it's successor's release.

No, No ... Devs working for Sony say it has so it must be true...I mean ok they havent been able to show that it is even equal to the 360 yet but don't let that stop you believing the hyp...I mean truth.
Oh and you just wait till they unleash the 4D...then everyone will bow down before the true 'unlocked' potential. Sony's game plan was to lock up as much power as possible so when the public thought they were getting an expensive machine no better than it's 18 month old competitor they could unleash and recover the market. I mean who puts out a console with all its power available? Pfft....
...or, it isn't there. Take your guess.
the PS3 has really yet to scratch the surface with Madden 07 Ea ststed they only used about 20% of the PS3's true power its going to take a while to see the graphics we were promised but I assure you it should be worth the waitPeterTimpa
You ASSURE us that it SHOULD be worth the wait eh?Well i'd best rush out and buy one then :P

Anyone that believes the PS3's launch games display the full power of the PS3 is in obvious denial.
Anyone that believes the PS3 is going to double, treble or quintruple in power is in obvious denial. Sure its going to get better, just like the 360 will...but I can't believe so many people buy into the 'hidden power' joke that Sony likes to tell.

but why wait? why not get a 360 with all its great games out NOW and than when the wait it over and sony
does get some game pick up a PS3?
Perhaps I should have rephrased that sorry about that. What I trying to get across is that I think once GD finally master its capabilities we will see the best looking graphics I guessing close to cyrisis or maybe better I dont know for sure we will have to wait and see. As for the part were I said I assure you perhaps that wasn't the best set of words to use but I honestly think sometime in the next few years the PS3 will be in a league of its own, dont get me wrong the 360 has very impressive graphics and games. I really think the PS3, 360, and Wii are all excellent buys. Obviosly the PS3 is the late bloomer but we shall see what is in stor for the futurePeterTimpa
I would be willing to place a bet of 1 million (insert currency here) that the PS3 will never see anything like Crysis in terms of graphical quality. For a start it does not have ... oh why do I bother lol.
If you saw Oblivion on my PC and then saw it on either console you would never say such a thing. The PS3, or 360, will never meet the graphical capabilities of Prey running on my PC let alone Oblivion or Crysis. Hey, don't let me ruin the delusion though i'm sure the magic software key coming in a future firmware update will unlock the extra hardware you need in there.

That's not funny anymore and is getting pretty annoying.
About as annoying as the claims of hidden power ;).
Still I knowwhy developers talk about hidden power and it applies to the PS3, 360 and PC....can anyone guess what it is?

I know what you mean you are exactly right The PC will always raise the bar and set the standard. I know I am seem wishi washi but all I was trying to get across is that if only 20% of the PS3's power was used in Madden 07, just wait and see when the PS3 has a 100% of its power in use.Once again guys sorry if I came across ignorant or rude
Well in theory it's really powerful, but the architecture makes my brain bleed. YOu have the cell, with seven modules to assign tasks to and you can only access two of them at the same time! That sounds complicated. Add to tht the fact that programs can only be 256 KB per cell and this gets really tricky.
On the other hand, people are using it for medical imaging, which normally takes a supercomputer, and for protein folding, which it does 20-30 times faster than a PC. It's got a lot of power, but it's really hard to direct.

Nope you didn't, I was just being overly sarcastic. Its just that I know quite a bit about hardware and it's relationship to software due to my job. Madden may only use 20% of the PS3's power but all that actually tells us is that Madden is not a particularly demanding game.
The thing is that in order to be able to run a game like Crysis it does not matter if you have the worlds best CPU and GPU if you do not have the memory required to store the textures. The facts are that the PS3 doesn't have the worlds best GPU nor the best CPU. What it does have is a beast of a CPU for certain applications. As programmers get their heads around the use of mutli-core CPUs then the relative power of the PS3 will increase....but only so far in terms of its graphical output.
Sure, we will see some major improvements over the years but the fact still remains that the PS3 (and the others) just don't have the hardware they need. I do not doubt that they are more capable than what we have seen so far but I do not see how it is possible to produce games like Crysis, that stress the best hardware now to the max, on inferior hardware.

didnt realize the cell was its own console and by the waywii sales >>>>>>>> ps3 sales (sales matter dude)
I don't find the promise of future performance entertaining. If I'm paying hundreds of dollars for a console, I want to play NOW.
buh buh bubh bubh buh teh POTENSHUL
1st the ps3 so called power is in the cell processor which is actually no faster the the 360's chip but is capable of processing really high floating point numbers it has a decent FLU(floating point logic unit). But the question is what does this have to do with games, apart from physics its n ot up to much as physic programming is really behind everything else.
Also what do people who take the just wait approch actually think M$ will be doing in all this all time while we are waiting for the ps3.

Once developers get the hang of PS3 architecture, i tin of whoop *** will be opened. Good day :).
