Title pretty much says it all. Article is about how consoles have made a lot of progress with graphics and performance. Even if PC may always have the edge (with the best hardware), the differences are a lot less noticeable. And I agree, I'm pretty happy with the PS5 so far. I played AC Valhalla today and was just stunned by how good it looked. Demon Souls is another example. Incredible graphics and smooth performance. For a console gamer, this is pretty good. I don't feel the need to rush out and upgrade my PC.

What do you think, SW? Are you happy with the current state of console hardware now?

Maybe true, but I read the exact same articles back when last gen started, then again when the mid gen refreshes came.

I think we've hit something of a technological plateau, where improvements will be incremental rather than generational. I don't think it's going to matter all that much which platform you go for; the only real difference will be games, services and customizability.

PC will always have the advantage of being a continuously evolving and improving platform, while consoles stagnate with generations. However, this evolving nature also means the PC is a highly varied market with multiple segments and tiers, which is both a strength and a disadvantage. They have their pros and cons, and it ultimately depends on personal preference.

They leapt 7 years in one go, so or course the gap would be the smallest now.

In 2 years their GPU’s will be relegated to lower mid-range.

It’s a good thing that PC hardware will be the exact same as it is now for the next 7 years...

I really wish people would use their brains. Journos that know nothing about tech really bother me. PCs have been doing 120fps for how long? And how many console games are even running at that framerate? What native resolution are we getting at that framerate? Hell, are we even getting a majority of 60fps at 4K? Don’t think too hard. The answer is no.

Then there’s the fact that there are currently 11 GPUs available that outperform the consoles. And we’re a month deep... SSDs can now be purchased that are faster than the PS5 ssd, the consoles still have notebook CPUs and they have a shared RAM pool.

Stop comparing consoles to PCs. You console kids don’t like it when you’re losing, but any time some new consoles arrive, it’s y’all that are making these silly ass claims. Stay in your lane

The gap has closed because they are new systems... happens every time a new console generation starts. The fact is they only close the gap and are nowhere near totally closing it or getting ahead.

At least the cpu in these modern consoles isn't obsolete upon release, unlike last gen. So thats an improvement.

Watched some finals once, and the level of mastery on display was obvious. I'm sure it would have been even more impressive if I had first hand experience with the game.

Probably not as demanding as your top level fighting game, RTS, twitch shooter, etc. but still no walk in the park.

As for the "kids" knock, doesn't even make sense lol. As if kids can't recognize a good game, or aren't good at them. I was playing great games way back when and in some ways was better at them then than I am now.

I'm sure there's an army of 12 year olds who can wreck us all at our favorite games.

Kids also play Forza. Kids play Streets of Rage. Most video games are played by both children and adults. We're all a bunch of grown asses playing with toys when it comes down to it.

The consoles are already behind in ray tracing. A RTX 2060 Super can do it better than them and that card is close to the minimum needed to do ray tracing on PC. The consoles don't have anything like DLSS either so they can't increase their performance while maintaining image quality either. As the generation goes on the gap will get bigger like it always does especially in ray tracing since the consoles are pretty already a generation behind PC in it.

With the release of the 6800XT and 3080, the PS5 and XBSX were obsolete before they ever launched.

This is true. You don't need a license from Sony or Microsoft to publish a game on PC, so it will always be more popular for indie titles, many of which are very good games, even if some do have lower graphics. While it seems console makers are hell-bent on making graphics an issue, and why wouldn't they? They have to convince people to buy new hardware so they can continue to make money. But, most gamers just don't care that much about graphics, and prefer good, fun, gameplay instead.

If this wasn't true, Minecraft wouldn't be one of the most popular games of all time.

This board, after all these years still has the "kids" definition of "hardcore" in mind. Blood, swear words and adult content. But watching long cutscenes and participating in QTE's doesn't make them "hardcore." And shitting on everything that's popular doesn't make them edgy or cool. This board mocks niche games without realizing they've become the niche gamer. The "weeb" and "kiddy" games are more popular and higher regarded than whatever they're playing. But they come here to meet up with the dozen or so gamers that think like they do.

Fortnite has a high skill ceiling. But what do most users here know about that? Yeah, your average Roblox player is out here winning millions in a low skill kiddy game... Come on. These Fortnite haters play single player story driven games. They can't "git gud" at an online game, so they have to play games against NPC's to get that power trip. And that's fine if that's what you're trying to get out of gaming. But don't knock those that have developed some sort of measurable skill at something. COD. Most fighting games. Sports games. Theres a higher skill ceiling than playing Uncharted in hard. Kojima games. Doom. TW3. Naughty Dog games. Hell, most Sony 1st party titles. Learn how to job the AI and get your platinum trophy. Cool?

The performance of a console is irrelevant to me. I'll sooner take a weaker PC over a stronger console any day of the week, just because I prefer an open platform.

DLSS and amd's equivalent within this gen will make sure the gap doesn't really differ.

I really hope the mid-gen refresh has them or maybe something beefier.

Too many hackers on pc to enjoy it. Pc are good for work but for gaming they are poor.

I understand why the article exists... They are selling views and need to write about something.

In all honesty you people are brain dead if you can't by now understand how launch cycles vs PC actually work, "closing in" implies the gap will get smaller and that makes little to no sense on a platform that launches with one set of hardware and is used for 5-7 years while PC gaming increasing in performance every year or two by 30-40%.

The more years go into this generation the more graphical techniques and advancement in Ray Tracing will take place and these consoles will be in a steady decline vs PC to the point where the advantage will be undeniable... Like its always been.

Look at 360 with COD2 vs PC on Launch then look at COD4 vs PC during the end of its lifecycle.

This is as good as its going to be, in 2 years when there's another GPU launch on PC the gap will get even bigger and 4 years in with another GPU launch on PC you guys will be begging for a new console.

That’s why we have YouTube channels like “crap gamer” and those RDX clowns. Ask YouTube personalities like ColtEastwood, or Crapgamer how a teraflop is calculated. Ask them the difference between screen space reflections and ray tracing. Do they know what variable rate shading is? No, but they’ll tell you all about how their favorite console is better than the other and how the consoles are catching PC. They use these clickbait articles published by reputable sites as their sources. So in a way, publications chasing the bag by using clickbait are providing ammo to their competition.

I read the article, it doesn’t seem that misleading to me. The arguments in it are pretty good.

Switching to an SSD will make load times much more even. It’s not like PC will get something significantly better in a couple of years.

Consoles have also reduced the backwards compatibility benefit that PC had in a way that will remain.

CPU:s on the new consoles being relatively better than the Jaguar ones sounds plausible to me even if I’m not 100 % sure.

I think allthose three points are solid.

This happens every half a decade; a new system comes out (therefore consoles are now closer to PC gaming level) and people think PC gaming is not worth it anymore. But then times goes on and it goes back to the usual "PC gaming obliterates console" status quo.
