You know.. I remember last year when the PSP was selling 20k/week in Japan....
Nowadays it's usually 30-40k per week...
I think it's doing better than before...
It's interesting to note that the PSP's attach rate has gone up by 2 since Christmas, so even though PSP piracy is rampant, people are still buying software.
And with some pretty high profile games coming out this year
God of War: Chains of Olympus
Crush
Final Fantasy I+II
Final Fantasy Crisis Core
Jeanne D'Arc
Syphon Filter Logan Shadow
SOCOM Tactical Strike
Pursuit Force 2
Silent Hill Origins
Dungeons & Dragons Tactics
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
new peripherals coming to the States (camera + GPS)
more interactivity with the PS3 remote play feature and talked about integration with HOME
along with very STRONG rumors of a PSP "hardware refresh" (http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/05/17/psp-hardware-to-undergo-refreshing-change/)
and also along with the PSP online store set to be released this Fall 07
sounds like there are a lot of exciting things happening for a aystem that is supposedly on "life support"
PSP was already suffering from DS asskicking but i think the final hit was when shops dropped support for UMD movies entirely
that minute UMD joined the SONY dead formats graveyard and PSPÂ
Gears360
But teh PSP was supposed to be the bomb. It has better graphics, more capability, and when the DS came out the better screen. The one thing it lacks is good games, damn my PSP investment is bust. Oh well last month I bought 2 DSs and never looked back. PSP sure does look nice, but without compelling software it's just not that great. Don't get me wrong it does have several good games but the 3rd parties dropped the ball with the PSP.
Lets face it, the DS is slaughtering the PSP sales wise. They have officaly killed the PSP in Japan and theyre starting to do so in the states. I think where the PSP went wrong was it tried to do to many things at once, when all people wanted was a handheld game machine. If they wanted to listen to music, they would get a IPOD, and not enough people want to watch UMD Movies on the go. Do you guys think th ePSP is basicaly done for, or can it make a comeback? black_awpN1
DS is "slaughtering" every system in Japan sales wise. But in the same respect, its doing pretty well over there holding up aganist DS, your fanboyish eyes just can't see it.
PSP and DS were neck-in-neck in the US until a couple months ago when it began to take a dip in sales, and now following the price drop sales have tripled. In the UK following the price drop sales went up 60%.Â
Sony marketed PSP wrong, but the fact is there are plenty of great games out for it.
Because the DS is outselling it, that means the PSP is dead and over with?

Only if it continues and the PSP dosent release more compeling software. It seems to do everything well other than play games.

No offense guy, but you have no idea what you're talking about.
The PSP is a huge success for Sony. There will be a PSP 2 and a PSP 3 and so on...Â

So because DS is designed better for games, it means PSP is dead in the water? Because thats what the thread title and your original post summarize it as.Why do PSP haters even bother? You get your arguments blown out of the water every-freaking time. Rarely do I see PSP cows come up with such absurd threads in comparison.

What's a UMD? Are you talking about the Minidiscs the PSP uses? /saracsmPSP was already suffering from DS asskicking but i think the final hit was when shops dropped support for UMD movies entirely

PSP is definitely not doing as great as it could've with good software to start. But now it has plenty of features and good games with some very big ones coming. The problem for it ever taking off big is that the hype is dead. Also it's a little too much to ask out of the pretty idiot mainstream to use any of the other features because you have to have some basic technical skill. But really considering the units sold it's a pretty successful system. I mean you can bash it all you want but it has sold more than Xbox or Gamecube did.
And UMD was a huge mistake from the beginning.... anyone could've seen that one coming. I mean twice as much for the same quality as the already mainstream DVD that could only be played on PSP. Failed from first concept. If it had somehow come at the same time as DVD and there were home players it would've been great though.

it just means that no one has anything to say against it... especially the TC.
which means he wins. yayÂ
The PSP is long-term. Sony will support it like the PS2. Already in a shorter timespan it has sold more worldwide than the Gamecube did in it's lifespan.
Â
Failure. Utter failure.
Â
Oh, by the way, last time I checked, the PSP has just as many AAA and AA games as the DS. "Bu, bu, all that stuff is on the PS2!" Sure it is. Daxter is identical to the PS2 versions. Killzone Liberation, just the same damn game. At least the PSP has REAL sports games and I can download demos from my home and keep them for as long as I want. Nintendo DS as soon as you flip that switch off, bye bye demos.
It's not selling as well as the DS Teufelhuhn
Â
And that does not mean **** You know it and I know it. The logical people know it. The fact of the matter is the PSP came in and stole a portion of marketshare in a sector that was dominated by Nintendo. And I mean dominated. The GPX didn't sell 20+ million units. The Neo Geo Pocket, the Game Gear, the Wonderswan, The N-Gage. None of them came close to stealing a sizable percentage of the handheld market from the likes of the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance.
Â
Behind Nintendo's handhelds, the PSP is the next most successful handheld EVER. So what if the DS is outselling it. So what if Sony said this, and that, and blah, blah. Can't the fanboys find anything else to grasp onto? Because the fact of the matter is, the PSP rocks, has great games, multiple functions, and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Last time GPS was fused with a handheld, this was born...
(A cookie to whoever can guess what this handheld is)
On topic, the PSP is a total failure. Terrible load times and few worthwhile games hurt it, while the DS is the final headshot. LAME. Go DS.

Then again, maybe the PSP is already as bad of a failure as this...

Â
Yeah, selling more units in half the timespan as the Gamecube is a complete failure. Having your competition outsell you means utter disaster.
Â
I guess that means the Xbox, the Nintendo 64, and the Gamecube were complete failures too. After all, they were outsold by their competition.
Â
What part of STEALING away marketshare do you not understand? What part of SAME AMOUNT of AA and AAA games do you not understand? That's simple 8th grade comprehension skills. Â
1/3 market share in an arena where everyone not named nintendo has flopped really hard is not exactly a failure. especially when it is still selling pretty well
It flopped before it even released. Most cows will argue that it will sell 20 million+ units with the release of GOW though.

Yeah, way to pick ONE of the features (GPS) and claim that it makes a handheld a total failure.
like TekkenMaster60 said, same amount of AAA and even MORE AA games than the DS.... that equals "few worthwhile games"? I guess the DS has even less.
Your only argument is load times, which I concede in that the PSP's load time pales in comparison to the DS. But really, this isn't a problem is all games, and the load times are about the same as a console with an optical drive. I mean, if you're streaming tonnes of data, optical storage is the way to go... I can't imagine how expensive it would be to purchase DS games that have a cartridge size of 1GB or more.

And it had a good presentation at the square-enix paty. So it is picking up heat but it is not going to catch up with ds
If Sony and the developers stick with it for a bit , in a couple of years (with price drops) it could be looking at 40-50 million sales worldwide. That would be most impressive in its own right. Nike_AirEspecially considering the stranglehold that Nintendo had on the handheld front. I don't think Sony figured they would win that front, rather make some decent sales in that market, and they have made some decent strides. They aren't on par with DS but they are still making a decent profit off of the handheld.
