Guys, Double Helix has been working on this game for only 10 months!  MS wants it to be a launch title(admitedly a bit of bullying on their part) so Double Helix was like ok lets get the gameplay down to a science then release characters and modes as we finish them instead of:

A) Making an 85 character game with rushed gameplay for $60 or...

B) release the full game holiday 2014 for $60.

The mere fact that MS and Double Helix is giving us a fighter this holiday season is great news.  Where's the PS4 fighter?  There are virtually NONE announced, not even for 2014, for the platform that has been a haven for fighters since the early days with Battle Arena Toshiden, Bushido Blade, Tekken, Rival Schools etc..

Personally, I'd rather they do it right with the gameplay, play the game this year then release the game in $20 seasons than do either of the above.  All in all the full game will be able to be had for about $60 and will most likely be between 14-17 characters as "all new" characters have already been confirmed.  Also they get the chance to have true community feedback to help them tweak the game for future season releases.

Maximillian gives his take here as probably the one person on earth who doesn't work for MS or DH that has been constantly exposed to the game.

It's almost a no-brainer.

I have nothing against the PS4, will be getting one holiday 2014, but in the mean time for you guys that are getting it at launch what fighters will you be playing?  Playstation has always lorded it's fighter genre dominance over the other consoles.  Now with the Xbox One's lowered and improved d-pad and a launch fighter for $20, dare I say the tides have turned?

B) release the full game holiday 2014 for $60.

Spartan070

What's wrong with that ? What's wrong with releasing a full game.

Microsoft has made 2free to play games on PC before... they didn't turn out so well to put it nicely. They had almost nothing to do with the series they were based on and the F2P aspect was unneccesary. I hope KI will turn out well, as I have fond memories of the SNES version. But given MS past experience ? Yeah, I don't have much hope.

Well in theory by then the full game will be out and one will have paid $40-$60 for it. I see what you mean though. My only fear is that by the time "season 3" releases fans will have moved on to some other newly announced fighter.

I dont think its unjust. It's clearly a rush job. And making it free to play but giving you such shitty limited gameplay is more a kick in the teeth than a gift. Once you pay full price to unlock the full content, it's actually a really bad deal if anything. Only MS could start out with something being proposed as a bargain and end up making people feel ripped off.

Sounds like a rip off. How will i know which character i like? I liked Sabrewolf, Cinder, Glacier when KI was on the Snes but what is saying i like them now, Will i have to pay to try out characters? Imagine if their is 20 characters on the game when the game is fully complete which means this game will cost a cool $100.

Yup pure rip off.

Oh Battle Arena Toshiden, Bushido Blade, Tobal #1 where awesome games back in the day.  How about SF: Alpha,  Ergheiz

Of course not, but in order to "finish" the game they'd need till holiday 2014 or more likely spring 2015. That's not a "bit later," the games only been in dev for 9-10 months. I think if DoubleHelix had their way they'd release spring 2015 but MS is pushing for launch. Still shocked at the extreme lack of any fighter anywhere on the PS4 horizon, even more shocked by the lack of outrage.

Season 1 = $20 Season 2 = $20 Season 3(if confirmed) = $20 :| You don't have to buy characters individually, I bet 1 in every 1,000 KI players will do that instead of getting the bundles.

This and this KI is coming out because its shallow enough and easy to do to secure another launch game to the numbers

Because you can just get Blazblue Chronophantasma early next year which will be a much better game since its actually developed by a company that has many years of experience of developing fighting games unlike Killer Instinct

Both where awesome games and beyond their time in fighting mechanics. Tobal #1 was interesting also and was also made by Squaresoft. Bloody Roar, I could not remember the name as i kept on thinking Primal Rage for some reason lol.

Charging $15 or whatever it is for a character in a F2P Fighting game is like charging for every weapon in a F2P shooter that only gives you one SMG for you to defend in a vast array of maps and game modes. With that said: lol KI

Okay TC, let's talk. For starters, I don't think the reason this game is receiving as much ire as it is has as much to do with it being an Xbox One title than you think it does. Are there fans here that shit on it because its an Xbox game? Sure, but when we go outside of this enclosed enclave, there just isn't that much interest in this game right now. There are a lot of reasons we can point to for this but let's start with some of the obvious ones.

1. Bad Messaging - Look, there is no denying that MS & DH have allowed misinformation to just permeate all coverage of this game. From the get go, they just never really commit to what the business model for the game would be, and have dodged concrete answers since E3. There are people who think its a retail game, but there is no product listing for it at retailers. There are people who think it is entirely F2P, but don't understand what exactly they would be paying for. I know they cleared it up this week, but clearing it up now doesn't meant that most people got their first look at this title within the first two months, scratched their heads and walked away. First impressions are everything.

Now, lets be fair - fighting games aren't a genre that see this kind of business model, and it is a new concept fans and casuals will have to get used to. But, MS should've known that. They should've had the foresight to see that this could be something that would confuse consumers, and to get their messaging regarding their business model settled even before they announced the game. After all, I doubt they made the game with a $60 model in mind and converted it a few weeks ago.

2. Time is Everything - You're a massive KI fan - I understand and respect that; I have a bit of nostalgia regarding this series as well. But as you said in the TC ( and I don't know where you got this from if its true) but if DH has only been working on this game for 10 months, that is a frighteningly short amount of time, particularly for a studio that is pulling double duty (Strider - Capcom). What we're getting at launch is a tiny initial roster of 6 characters, no story mode, and an incredibly short amount of time for bug fixing and balance testing.

There was another fighting game that came out at budget price with a paltry roster that floundered, and that game had some SOLID fighting mechanics - Skullgirls. Skullgirls, over a year later, is finally getting some new characters,  and hopefully the community for this game grows as a result, but there is a strong chance that it won't ever hit the same level as an Arc Systemworks, SNK, ror Capcom fighting game. Characters are the lifeblood of a fighting game as well as their greatest chance at hitting big with a wider audience. Each character appeals to different people in different ways. The fewer characters you have, the greater chance you have at not interesting people with particular tastes.

3. Half-Baked Mechanics - Full disclosure; i'm a huge fighting game fan. Went to EVO this year in Vegas, meet some friends out there from within the industry (Shout out to S-Kill :P ) and watching KI during the finals on day 3 made me realize just how AWFUL the mechanics governing the game are. The combo breaker system allows you to negate the damage of a combo? No resource associated with actually pulling off a combo breaker? Really low-damage on hits to make the game super accessible?

Okay, that last part can be updated with a balance patch, but those earlier mechanics are just silly. If I get my opponent in a combo, i'd like to think it was because I outsmarted or exposed a weakness in my opponent. If all of the damage in a combo I am doing can be negated with two button presses, why would I do combos? And sticking to a footsie game would be viable, except single hits do shit damage in that game. Several of the matches at EVO resulted in timeouts. And let me remind you, an overabundance of timeouts at the competitive level is a result of something being broken in the mechanics. Timeouts kill all hype and momentum in a competitive game, and was one of the major reasons Street Fighter X Tekken never acquired a large competitive following, despite them patching and fixing their issues many months later.

This post is intended for the OP. If he reads it fine, if anyone else finds it interesting, great. I'd give you a TL;DR but it covers a lot of ground.

Maximillian is wearing NOSTALGIA GOGGLES big time on this one.

Ki looks awful all around.Especially gameplay wise for anyone that is not mega casual  wen it comes to fighters.

Also if you want to play the game more seriously that graphics with all the particle  effects and shit flying everywhere will get old very fast. Its 10 times worst then marvel 3.

Very good post with tons of great points, and perspective(super jelly of the EVO trip...).  The only counterpoints I would have are with the damage system.  The amount of damage done by the combo is greatly enhanced by landing a combo finisher.  The whole idea is to reward skilled players.  If a noob picks up Saberwulf, who is 100% RUSHDOWN in his playstyle, they will be able to pull off some cool combos simply by lucking out button mashing.  If they lack the skill to finish the combo, their combo will not do too much damage.  Thus they must hone their skills and have an attack plan.  Also the Breaker system is a bit more in depth now(light, medium and heavy breakers instead of just breakers), especially with Counter Breakers.  It certainly favors the more skilled.

Excellent post though.

Here Maximillian sits down with one of the devs and they actually play the game while they're narrating giving a good idea of the mechanics.

KI has always had low character lists, they have already announced plans for at least 16 characters, more than KI 1 and 2 combined.

Oh, and TC, one last thing before I go. I'm an old school KI fan and I gotta say... Jago is a ninja! Why is the new Jago wearing what looks like a goalie mask and brandishing a middle-eastern looking rapier/falchion? He brandishes a katana!

I love the subtle effect on his knee pads though. It's something you'll probably really appreciate when seeing the game in person, but his knee pads have a tiger's mouth on the top and bottom of the knee. They look like the tiger's mouths are growling when he is in his idle pose.

well not really more than k1 + 2 combined since that would mean 22 characters. And yes its true they had low numbers, but not THIS low. 6-8 is just TOO low.

[QUOTE="II_Seraphim_II"]So what you are saying is you'd rather have a game rushed out than a well made game released a bit later? kthxbyeSpartan070

Im not shocked at the lack of a fighter. I would rather have no fighters than a rushed one. This game is being rushed, its pretty damn clear. Maybe you support that type of development practice, but I personally would like my developers to take the time they need to create a complete and coherent product. I dont wanna pay money to beta test a game.

Killer Instinct looks like crap. Why would I buy that when USS4 is coming?

If MS wanted to bring back KI, they should have waited until it was entirely complete to do so.

To defend a game's quality based mainly on the fact that it has no competition is the same as saying: "You may as well take this Big Wheel through the desert since there are no Huffy's around." To use this argument for a game that is an obvious rush job installment of a franchise that has enjoyed limited relevance at best throughout its lifetime only exacerbates the issue. You can peddle your ass through the Gobi if you want, but i'll wait for the cab.

I dont think its unjust. It's clearly a rush job. And making it free to play but giving you such shitty limited gameplay is more a kick in the teeth than a gift. Once you pay full price to unlock the full content, it's actually a really bad deal if anything. Only MS could start out with something being proposed as a bargain and end up making people feel ripped off.Ninja-Hippo
So it is a rush job that they do not wanna release a game broken and are instead making one fighter at a time to make sure it is balanced? Mind blown!

I'll just keep playing Super Street fighter IV which has its gameplay down to a science confirmed.
