As for the OP, you're right. 5 years ago you'd buy a game (at least on consoles anyways), and that was it. No new maps, characters, modes, missions, whatever. The game you bought was the game it was gonna stay. DLC gives you the option, if you want, to get extra content for a game you already enjoy. I'm not gonna argue that DLC is handled well (overpriced, extra content should have been in the game originally) by developers all the time, but to complain about developers giving you optional content is kind of silly.
5 years ago optional content = sequel.
Development cycles now prioritize DLC.
5 years ago it was work on a game for 2 years, release everything you have. Work on the sequel for 2 years, release everything you have. Now its work on a game 1 year, release it, charge DLC for all the work you do the next year, then rinse, wash, repeat.
Theres no way around, we're paying more then ever before for the SAME amount of content. We're just getting some of it a little earlier for a premium price.
Its a win for the developers and a loss for the gamer

Or you can wait for the late edition that comes with all the DLC for $60 or cheaper, or get the game at release and just not buy the DLC.
I love this generation. Want the full Far Cry 4 experience without handing over $100? Wait 12 months for the GOTY edition.
