PRICE

Nintendo is clever. they released a console at a time where the world was going through the worst financial crisis. In the console market, 80% of final consumers are children/teengers/students who depend on their parents financially. Wii launch price was $250, whereas PS3 launch price was $600 and 360 $400.

Nintendo positioned their product as an innovation ( that's why they first named it revolution ).Now an innovation at such a low price? Not bad. Now parents who were already having a hard time making ends meet obviously bought Wii. Even hardcore Playstation fans wouldn't dare to burden their parents for buying a Gaming Console which had a price tag of $600.

Without doubt, Wii has excellent games under its belt. But PRICE has played a major factor this generation because of recession faced by economies.

I have a question, if Playstation 3 was released ( without Blu-ray ) with the same price point as Wii's, which console would be topping the charts right now?

No, the reason they are winning is because of families and old people buying the Wii to dance around and stomp around trying to get "fit"

America is fat right now, what a great time to market the WII FIT

Lots of people buy a Wii for entertaining guests. My cousins that are retired school teachers bought one lol....could you ever imagine retired teachers buying a 360 or PS3? Not gonna happen.

Technically it started probably 30 years ago, it just now has the greatest effect.

Just like how the Gamecube and Dreamcast were highly succesful because they were cheaper than their competitors?

Nintendo won by being different than their competition, not trying to better. The end.

Did I travel back three years in time, or are we really 4 days from 2011 and people are just finding this out?

That may be part of the reason it's sold a lot, but don't undermine the fact that it has GREAT games on the console. Also, America is fat but that isn't the only place the Wii is selling.

Lol, this topic is made like once a week and people always seem to forget that the Gamecube was way cheaper than the competition, and when they lowered it to $100 it still didn't sell.

Because old people had no interest in the gamecube. Many households own a Wii just to entertain guests.

Oh, as usual, it's either PRICE!!!11 or TEH WII FIT!!111 MUSHON SENSINGZ BUT NAO THEY R DOOMED BECUZ OF TEH MOVE AND KINECT!!!!11

Nintendo are winning because they ditched the whole "let's make a cinematic interactive video experience" idea and rediscovered their arcade gameplay roots. Price, controller and everything else were tools they used to achieve a more arcade-ish and streamlined experience.

It was $50 more than what they normally release their consoles at. And $75 more in Canada.

They are winning the race because they offered a gimmick that a ton of non-gamers loved and wanted to be a part of. Their core audience remains about the same as it did on the GC and N64.

It won the race because their was an innovation that made the competition less relevant and drew in more consumers to expand the industry. Shortages also contributed to the immense popularity of the Wii for a raging two years, branding it as a must have item.

Yeah.. and it's not just the price. The motion sensor controls was complete different from what people had seen and that got million interested. After people played it, the loved it and told other casual people. And so on, and so on, and so on. After 4 years, 80+ million now own a Wii. lol!! It was many things though. 1. Price 2. Games 3. Easy of use 4. Unique game control 5. Fun game play. 6. Word of mouth. So, not just price.

OOOooo, I like you. Agreed, a few things over the last ~40 years directly led to this.

Namely:

Nixon removing the Gold based dollar

Clinton repealing Glass-Steagle

Bush stimulus

Derivatives markets

And I just bought one with almost 10 games about a month ago... and I was one of the biggest "Wii haters" on this board since 2007. I'd say they are winning the race if they can bring a highly-cynical core gamer back into the fold.

Can you back that up? 80% sounds a little high. According to the ESA, the average age of gamers is 34.

No, but only 25% of 360 owners are on Xbox Live Gold, according to Microsoft, so even if there's not a single female gamer on Live, that does nothing to prove or disprove how many women play on 360's, as going by Live alone leaves 75% of 360 owners unaccounted for.
