The reason why pc gaming seems to cost over $1k for those who never build a pc.

What gets me is that most people buy a $700-$800 computer every 3-4 years anyway, so why not just build a gaming pc for that much that often. Costs the same and you get a whole hell of a lot more out of it.

SLI does not scale too well until just recently and only the new 6000 ATI series come close.

a 3 way SLI with 8800GTXs would still be poor in performance compared to newer high end cards.

It's better to stay around the mid to high range single gpu cards and upgrade in smaller increments.

Although you don't really need to upgrade if you don't mind running at slightly lower settings over the years.

Well I have the money to upgrade when I want, but my friend had the same computer from 2006 and just got some new parts for Christmas to build a new one. That pc cost $800 when he bought it and still ran every game out. He only upgraded because he wanted to, not because he had to. In that same time, my parents have gone through 3 computers at least $600 each, so he spent a bit more on a good pc, knows enough to keep it running for a long time, and didn't have to spend money on a console. He comes out waaay on top in that scenario.

I used to build really high end pc most to just say I have the best 3dmark/sisoftsandra scores. Now I save my money and stay high to mid. I still oc my pc just don't feel the need to chase scores anymore. Best upgrade I did was putting os on ssd it was sick how fast everything loaded.

They brought the 5000 series xfire up to snuff a few months ago. Something like 30-40% performance gain in a driver update.

My next major purchase will be upgrading my desktop for gaming, and I've already figured I can do the necessary upgrades for under $300. If you already have even a fairly new OEM machine, you can probably make it gaming-worthy for the same price or less than a current-gen console.jalexbrown

It's true, my custom PC is under 1k and can still max out a lot of games.

But I'm upgrading next month for games like Crysis 2, The Witcher 2, etc.

believe it or not, not everyone is a PC gamer, or even a gamer for that matter.

Im in the market to finally build,buy a new desktop OR a new laptop for some light gaming. I would never pay over 800$ for either. Right now I have parts picked out on newegg for just over 600$..Cant wait to do something soon..As far as laptops go..I would NEVER EVER pay over 800 and would rather never pay over 500 for something that I cant fix. Anything at all goes wrong with a laptop and its trash for the most part.
