brand-new MMO in development called,Wild West Online which is slated for a late 2017 release. In a nutshell, WWO is Red Dead Redemption made massively multiplayer, a project tackled by devs who were frustrated that this sort of game hadn’t happened yet. It will be an open-world PvP title with lawmen, bandits, gambling, prospecting, bounty hunting, and bank heists.

The game is being developed by a brand-new studio, 612 Games, which contains veterans from League of Legends and Crysis.

those pictures look really gorgeous but they really need more than that if they want to beat RDR

That's an old meme that needs to die. There is no reason a modern engine can't handle an MMO backend, especially if they are instancing the hell out of everything to keep player counts down (which is the only real potential issue that isn't even as big of an issue today as it once was).

You can make a modern MMO on the Unreal 4 Engine's front end with a separate MMO backend and have a ridiculous high fidelity. Older MMOs were doing more open-world stuff with a lot of unique characters on screen years before single player games were taking advantage of that design. The tech wasn't as far along as it is today. There's also the fact that MMOs tend to have a lot more content in them even at launch and require a lot more unique art which just takes a lot more time. Lowering the fidelity means you can get art assets through the pipeline faster.

It's a balance. Do you spend that $100 million and 6-7 years on the initial development to have that high fidelity, or do you reduce fidelity and get the game out faster and for cheaper.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a healthy playerbase. Pushing graphics like this for an actual open world mmo would really limit how many people are capable of running it. But yeah, you could totally heavily instance your players but that really takes away the feeling of it being an actual world you can log into. Honestly though, whats the point of an MMO with a RDR feel if you're going to have "lobbies" just like GTA online? We'll have that game next year from rockstar anyway

Yeah this looks great,

but honestly I'd be more interested if it was a singleplayer game (but then the comparisons with RDR wouldn't end :p)

They apparently got funding and wont need an kickstarter

http://www.pcgamer.com/wild-west-online-receives-funding-will-sidestep-kickstarter-and-include-female-characters-from-outset/?utm_content=buffer195e5&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=buffer_pcgamerfb

"Wild West Online—an upcoming western MMO from newly formed outfit 612 Games. Within Steven's interview with Stephan Bugaj, the creative vice president of publisher DJ2, we learned a Kickstarter was on the horizon which would ask for $250,000 with stretch goals tied to additional funding.

Now, 612 Games has received additional funding from the game's initial investors which means it will no longer pursue crowdfunding, nor will it enter the game into Steam's Early Access pre-release initiative."

I hope they dont have some hideous overly cluttered UI that blocks these nice visuals.

i'm intrigued but obviously some gameplay and information is needed
