The gameplay sucks (frankly it's the number 1 reason).
People will say that's a crazy notion because the shooting mechanics are good, but those are just mechanics. Gameplay is a combination of things. The pacing, the level design, variety, the sequence you are playing, the narrative context, and all that jazz. And we've been shooting dudes in the face from the first person perspective for 2 decades now, it's not impressive when someone makes good shooting mechanics.
Anyway the gameplay sucks, because it's the same dull, boring, drudging, tedious mission over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. You go to a thing, dinklebot does dinklebot things, and then waves of enemies come at you in this dull shooting gallery. With very little in the way of variation. Other shooters have started adding stealth elements or mixing their shooting up from the sniping part, to the run n gun segment, to vehicle segments, to what have you. Destiny? Outside of one part with a sword and one part with a vehicle, it's all the same bunker down shoot waves of dudes.
Enemies are sponges that are tethered to specific points, boss fights are lazy from a design standpoint as they just take one member of a faction (usually the largest one), make him bigger, and way more spongy. So you get an encounter that isn't challenging, isn't interesting, isn't clever, but time consuming and dull compared to all those boss fights of yester year that completely clowned this amateur hour shit.
Throw in the part where the game expects you to loot grind for fun, and that's what the game calls depth and playing the game at higher level at 20? I grew up in an era when games kicked our asses until, we got good. My era was get good, bitch. And mmo/loot plebs defend this as all mmo/loot nonsense does this? Well okay newsflash if they all do this, literally exactly the same way, this isn't depth, this interactive labor. You don't get the joy of a game or shooting aliens or a challenge, you get the video game equivalent of being Kunta Kintai. You get to take the role of Alfred but without the ability to tell Batman he's being a bitch. You get to be Geoffrey, but you can't tell Uncle Phil he's fat.
Throw in that added bonus that games like Path of Exile have way larger skill trees that allow for more variation with their builds (the loot stuff is still lame but whatever), and you have a game that didn't even do the interactive slavery part right.
Oh and the PvP is a cluster **** of freebie kills and cheap power ups that provide little to no skill ceiling, and at the time it was AR+Shotgun we out here town. Never mind the socialist bullshit that was carrying your team, only for the guy who was dead last on the losing team to get a rare engram, because we're all created equal when the very nature of competition is the opposite of we're all created equal.
**** that game.
