How come people act like only the Wii is aimed at casuals? 360 and PS3 are also aimed at casuals - the SHOOTER CASUALS. You know the ones I'm talking about: the annoying people who buy or ask for a 360 or PS3 so they can play shooters, shooters, and more shooters, the people who think they're "h4rdc0re becuz I play geers uf war all dai lol"

I've got news for you: if all you do is play shooters like Gears and COD - YOU ARE A CASUAL. YOU ARE NOT HARDCORE. Just like those Wii casuals who play shovelware mini-games all day long. Just like the sports casuals who bought a PS2 just so they could play the new Madden each year and NOTHING ELSE. Shooter casuals are ruining PS3 and 360. All the devs want to make these days are "gritty and dark, realistic" shooters. Variety and original ideas are dying out, because all you people want to do is play a 3-hour shooter campaign and then go online and play boring, repetitive multi-player. "zomg wow, I can't wait to play Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 World At War Again, where I fight the same campaign in the same gritty, 'dark' environments, then I go online and just play deathmatch over and over and over till the next sequel comes out, then I start the whole thing over again!"

This is the reason this generation will never be better than the PS2-XB-GC era: variety. Last-gen had much better variety than this one - even 3D platformers were just as huge as they were in the '90s, but they're virtually dead now. This gen started very promising, but after Gears came out, that's when we got screwed. Bunch of meathead soldiers killing aliens in dark environments and soldiers fighting in blown-up cities. Oh wow, I just described every big console shooter released in the past two years.

Am I the only one who notices this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

There are casual games for every system. Wii just has more casual, not even casual, shovelware.

You're very right in your assesment about all things you said except variety. There is a lot of variety in genres but you wont hardly hear about it here in SW. Also be prepared to get flamed for telling the truth, lots of posters here don't want to hear it and might hate you for it.

Why he need to list something? If he play only one game but puts lot of time into it he is still hardcore gamer. But more accurate term would be hardcore (insert game name) player When someone says hardcore gamer overall than ok, he really need to list everything he played because to be hardcore overall you should strive to play all games ever released lol

The biggest problem this gen is narrowminded gamers. They complain about issues that really don't exist in an attempt to seem intelligent. There is so much variety amongs all of the different platforms, includidng the handhelds and DL services like XBLA, PSN and VC.

You need to look harder. The games are there.

This is quite accurate. Also of note, there is no set definition of hardcore and casual, so there is little use in arguing it, unless you specify and agree on a common definition.

There are two different kind of casual games. Halo/Super Smash Brothers casual. The kind of casual game that actually appeals to gamers and non gamers alike. Then theres the rubish casual that only appeal to people who don't care so much about quality of the game... Games based off of television shows or mini game collections like Carnical games or somthing. In this case Most of the quality casual games are at home on the 360. Where as the Wii gets a butt load of the raw casualness.

There are quite a few minigame collections that I have found very enjoyable, notably Rayman Raving Rabbids and the WarioWare series.

Oh certainly. But I was just saying that to me it seems unfair to blanket label minigames as bad, when there are very much good minigame games out there. But yes, many are poorly made.

While I will definitely agree that there is SOME variety (I've got quite a few PSN/XBLA as well as 50+ combined titles across 3 platforms, not a single one of them a FPS or TPS), the problem seems to be that the games most consumers are, well, consuming, seem to be shooters. It seems as if the recent NPD numbers, where every single one of the 5 360/PS3 games on there is a shooter.

I know it's a trend, just as last gen platformers and, to a lesser extent, JRPGs, were a trend, and that it will probably fade, as the enormous rise of online gaming and shooters are certainly correlated, but just look at some of those numbers. Valkyria Chronicles sold what, 33k? Whereas we have games like Gears of War selling 5+ million, and Halo at nearly 10 million? I think the problem for quite a few people is that the variety is there, as I can attest to in my game collection, but the choice isn't exactly vast. If I wanted to pick up a shooter this generation, I have a decent choice of many 9.0+ shooters to choose from (CoD4, Halo 3, Gears 1/2, Resistance 2) and not an enormous amount of other stuff. Moreso than shooters I blame high development costs and an overemphasis on online gaming, but as they say: "this too shall pass."

I doubt any non-gamer can just pick it up and start playing naturally.

for the record, warioware is awesome..

and don't ask me how many times i've seen some dude with a dusty xbox with nothing but sports, racing, gta and halo as their entire dusty collection

i've weeped every time i've seen this library of games.. it's usually somebody in their 30s

no doubt in my mind you can be a casual gamer and play things like gears

i also know gamers who are the opposite of casual, they play almost everything and often.. but yet they still can't use dual analog.. strange

there is no such thing as 'hardcore' gamers there are just gamers, that play more than 1 genere and casuals, that play one and only one genre and find the rest as a waste of time. they also talk most of the trash

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Shooter casuals aren't just "fans" of a genre. That's ALL THEY PLAY. Aside from the Wii and music games, shooters are the OTHER casual craze.

So you define a person's gaming tastes as being a "hardcore" gamer? What about a person who enjoys his/her JRPGs a few hours ever week? Are they hardcore? Or more hardcore than the guy who play competitive Halo 3 or Gears for 30+ hours a week?

Exactly how do you define "hardcore"?

I personally consider myself a "hardcore" gamer not just because I play very deep games, but I play them often.

Agreed. People who enjoy console shooters aren't hardcore gamers. A hardcore fan of FPS's can't do without 60fps and Keyboard/Mouse.

Yeah..no

It's hilarious how you nostalgic you nerds are. Everything in the past is always ZOMG AMAZING and everything now is garbage. It's like that with games, music, movies, hell any form of entertainment.

Shooter fans such as myself didn't ruin gaming, you and your greedy devs did, get it right. We didn't go to these developer studios and point a gun at their heads and say develop a shooter or you die. We aren't the ones complaining about every little f***** detail. OMG THOSE TEXTURES ARE HORRIBLE! GAME AM FAIL CONFIRMED!

Last gen, you "gamers" were okay with good games. Now, it has to be perfection, if it's not, you don't buy it.

Oh, correct me if I'm wrong but don't you guys always sit on here asking for a multiplayer for each game and if it doesn't it's only a rental? Yeah, keep blaming it on shooter fans, because it's our fault you guys are never satisfied with anything apparently.l

I detect your sarcasm, but it's pretty much the case. If someone only plays one genre 99% of the time then that is pretty much casual gaming going on.

You play what interests you. I have a friend who only plays military games(MOH,COD, brothers at arms, etc) and sports games he plays every sport and plans on joining the military. Some people have broader interests then others. I have always been interested in organised crime, survival and stories about average people(GTA, Fable, Fallout 3 etc). Some people have broader interests then others. an't insult people for not branching out.

The problem is trying to oversimplify things by labeling people as either hardcore or casual. Sure shooters are the genre with the least amount of depth but if someone plays shooters for 20 hours a week, I would still consider them hardcore. I think we need to ditch these terms, I don't even remeber these labels before this generation.
