I remember when I first started lurking on System Wars around the time Xbox/GC were released. It was around this time that we saw the popularity in FPS explode into the market. These FPS games were considered hardcore games that offered competitive multiplayer (Halo, CSS, Unreal Tournament, etc.) and required lots of skill to be good at.
However, sports games were considered casual, recycled, rehashed garbage.

I feel like the two genres have swapped places. I'm a gamer that enjoys a variety of genres so I don't believe I'm that biased. I strongly believe that the sports genre offers more depth, skill, and competition than any modern day FPS (yes, even Battlefield 3).

See, while FPS offer slightly upgraded games year after year (that use the same graphics engine, but offer a new albeit short campaign, some maps, and a few new guns/game modes), it's understood that for the most part, the FPS genre is an oversaturated rehashed genre of the same sequels coming out year after year. Sports games, however, aim to change their core gameplay year after year. I can't speak for every game, but as a huge NHL fan, the NHL series delivers innovation every entry. This year, upgraded AI, physics, game modes, better controls, etc. Every time I pick up a new NHL game, I'm impressed by how the core gameplay is always a bit different and requires a lot of time to master the new features. On the other hand, when I pick up a new CoD game, I instantly start playing as if it's the exact same game from last year; the gameplay is never modified very much.

TL;DR = Sports games are now more innovative, require more skill and have more depth in controls and gameplay, than modern day FPS offer.

 that line killed your entire post.

So tweaking/implementing new AI, physics, controls (new moves or changing the existing moves to be more realistic), new game modes, new rosters, etc. doesn't impact the core gameplay? You killed your own post with ignorance buddy.

you've described every sequel there, rehashed or not. at it's core, it's still a sports game with VERY FEW changes. it's imbued in the genre, you just can't start making new rules.

I agree with some of what you say. People are still prejudiced against sports game though. However one can't say that FPS today are harder than they were before.

FIFA alone has a lot of depth, and I still can't believe the level of extreme adiction some have.

I don't know about FIFA, but I can tell you that NHL 12 added absolutely nothing to the core gameplay this year.

The AI is way smarter and more improved. Harder to get the puck from them, and your team mates make much smarter plays. Hitting is much more realistic and satisfying. Be a Legend mode is a cool addition (not worth buying the game for, but it's always nice to receive new game modes) Be a Pro has received a nice upgrade, choosing from tons of minor league teams. They added new teams from other leagues. Minor gameplay tweaks to increase realism and enjoyment. One thing that comes to mind is that you feel much more vulnerable and have to protect the puck much more (the gameplay relies on stick handling and deking even more now).

No offense TC, but this thread is kind of bad. You obviously don't play many FPS games to make this kind of judgement.

Check both my gamertag (Yapster) and steam profile. That only shows recent gens though, I grew up playing Wolfenstein/DOOM/Quake/Half-Life, so nice try. I think a lot of System Wars just isn't into sports, thus my argument is invalid among them. If you knew how much strategy goes into adjusting lines, changing your defence/offense/break-out strategies on the fly (meaning you're still playing), doing offense and defence line changes on the fly, not taking penalties but creating chances, etc. The sports genre takes so much mental skill, especially when you are top 100 in the world; the leaderboards on NHL are great and really competitive.

So everyone dismissing this thread, you seem to just not enjoy sports, or EA dropped the ball on your preferred sport (although they usually do a great job), or you own a Wii/PC (those ports are bound to be terrible). GG System Wars.

"people are disagreeing with me, there's bound to be something handicapping their view! why else would they not see how amazing and superior sports games are?"

I just posted a legitimate argument and that is your response to it. Keep up the good work. And just to clarify, this thread is directed more towards the FPS that launch every other year/every year that are multiplayer oriented. I put out some valid points on why sports games require more skill and have more depth, yet you don't acknowledge any of it so what's the point.

As a NHL EA fan, I dissagree. I used to pay each year NHL since 93 for almost the same game full price... which I deeply regret doing.

Sports games did get alot better, they are way more technical... but from year to year... there's no OMG!!!THISYEARSITSGOTY!!!! I've stopped geting excited when they introduced the salary cap feature and dynasty.

Did you ever play in the EA Sports Hockey League? That was probably the best addition in years; making a team with your friends and you play individual positions, and you get XP points to spend on your player so it's really addictive and fun and relies on team work. Or even just playing online multiplayer with your friends all on a team on the same TV, probably some of the most fun I've had this gen.

Yes, that's exaclty what be a player is, yet for single player...

Their just combining simulator feautres and RPG style features. You can't say they haven't done the same thing for FPS.

It's like all these features, they could of implemented way back then... but their just taking one step at a time.

I dont think you have been on gamespot that long. back then system wars wasnt about the consoles. it was about the games. since you are a spotrs game fan you should remember the long threads about madden vs NFL 2k series and the NBA live vs NBA 2k series fifa vs PES and so on. system wars today is all about trolling, baiting and slick talk

The mainstream FPS genre has fallen pretty low of late, but it would need to start digging very deep to become as abysmally uninnovative as sports games.

Funny, because most gamers seem to still believe sports games are still rehashed trash. I mean, they still come out yearly. While alot of gamers will call shooters rehashed and having no skill involved they sure don't mind buying them in droves and arguing over which ones take more skill.

Not wen you're playing with a friend with a dozen guys behind both of ya'll watching, commenting, acting like how friends act. 5 - 10 hours fly really fast in that atmosphere. Trust me, try it sometimes, it basically captures the essence of what gaming has always ben, and multiplies it by tenfold.

Sports games are best played in a group, not online, but at the same place, playing it online alone/playing it alone is horrible - that's why i don't criticize people that bash on them, they most likely never experienced my way to play a sports game.

Damn, you're taste in games doesn't coincide at all with mine sometimes. I like playing in groups - sports, shumps, fighting games, stuff like that at least once a week with the guys in my neibourhood. That atmosphere is one of the reasons i live for.

And the extreme sports games I mentioned in my above posts.1200+ matches in NBA Street Vol.2.That game is the bomb.

5v5 league Counter-Strike > any sports video game ever. Change isn't what drives games to be competitive, solid baseline mechanics do that. Look at games like CS and Starcraft. The reason they become popular competitive games is because of a solid foundation that stays relatively the same.

It really depends on so many things. For example, in PC first person shooters you can master accuraccy by using the device that is most suited, a mouse/kb combo. But accuraccy is not the only skill needed in those games. Knowledge of the map itself, teamwork, problem solving if your in a tight spot, etc. And the emphasis of these also depend on what type of first person shooter you're playing. I bet a experienced team would know far more about these things.

Lucianu

No way. That's like asking me if baseball takes more skill than bowling. Both encompasses different skills.

pretty much. though on the fighter thing, i find pulling split-second cancels way tougher than ranking first in an FPS match :P

I think that what kills competitive online gameplay for sport games are team ratings, yeah I know it's somewhat realistic, but seriously how many different teams do people pick in games like FIFA, Madden, NBA 2k, NHL? and well for the people thinking sports games in general don't take as much skill as the best FPS is just plain wrong, I'll break down all the things that you have to master for a basketball game in order to be succesful, shooting mechanics, passing to the open man or the man making a move, picks, double cover, rebounding, blocking, stealing, closing lanes, offensive plays, defensive plays, lineups, matchups, tempo, rythm, substitutions, timeouts, low post, high post, clutch, timing....this is just basketball, on my experience most sports games simulations take this much or even more factors in order to be succesful. But swince most people don't like this kind of games just dismissed them. Heck the changes from FIFA 11 to FIFA 12 are huge just for the new defensive moves and strategies.

It's all just muscle memory whether it's a PC FPS or a fighting game.
