I remember when I first started lurking on System Wars around the time Xbox/GC were released. It was around this time that we saw the popularity in FPS explode into the market. These FPS games were considered hardcore games that offered competitive multiplayer (Halo, CSS, Unreal Tournament, etc.) and required lots of skill to be good at.
However, sports games were considered casual, recycled, rehashed garbage.
I feel like the two genres have swapped places. I'm a gamer that enjoys a variety of genres so I don't believe I'm that biased. I strongly believe that the sports genre offers more depth, skill, and competition than any modern day FPS (yes, even Battlefield 3).
See, while FPS offer slightly upgraded games year after year (that use the same graphics engine, but offer a new albeit short campaign, some maps, and a few new guns/game modes), it's understood that for the most part, the FPS genre is an oversaturated rehashed genre of the same sequels coming out year after year. Sports games, however, aim to change their core gameplay year after year. I can't speak for every game, but as a huge NHL fan, the NHL series delivers innovation every entry. This year, upgraded AI, physics, game modes, better controls, etc. Every time I pick up a new NHL game, I'm impressed by how the core gameplay is always a bit different and requires a lot of time to master the new features. On the other hand, when I pick up a new CoD game, I instantly start playing as if it's the exact same game from last year; the gameplay is never modified very much.
TL;DR = Sports games are now more innovative, require more skill and have more depth in controls and gameplay, than modern day FPS offer.
