So there seems to be a myth that Nintendo doesn't create mature games... WRONG! Listed below are five games developed and/or published by Nintendo or its subidariesthat are arguably more mature than anything on the market even today:

5. ETERNAL DARKNESS: SANITY'S REQUIEM

eternal darkness

Arguably one of the only few horror games ever created, Eternal Darkness has the distinction of being the only true psychological thriller game. The idea of the main protagonist losing a grip on reality, and the enemies, the character's moves and the environments changing accordingly is truly ground breaking and mind bending. It certainly is sad that more people didn't buy this, but those that di will agree with this that they were treated to what is one of the most unique games of all time.

4. CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY

Conker

You want raunchy? You got raunchy? Beneath the adorable cartoony exterior of this game was the most innuendo clad, outrageously crude dialog ever seen in any game until then. Riding on the success of all their other N64 efforts, Rare crafted not only what was considered the finest looking game on the N64, not to mention one that probably appealed to the mature crowd the most, but also a hell of a platformer, one that's right up there with Banjo and Mario 64 in terms of just how finely it played.

3. GOLDENEYE 007

Goldeneye

The game that birthed the modern console shooter was a damn fine adaption of a Bond movie that hadn't been that good to begin with. Till this date, it stands as a towering achievment, demonstrating not only how purportedly incompatible genres should be introduced to consoles, but also how movie based tie in games should be made, and what kind of production value and finesse a game should have. It may not have aged all that well, but Goldeneye 007 is inaruably the game that is single handedly responsble for all the console FPSs we see today.

2. METROID PRIME

Metroid Prime

It's hard to do Metroid Prime any justice. Words cannot even begin to describe how great this game was. However, the thing that probably stands out more than anything else about this stellar masterpiece is its atmosphere, that elevated this game to the lofty status which it holds today, and which imbued the game with an eerie hue, and a dark sense of foreboding. With a rich lore and a dark backstory which hinted at something ominous, Metroid Prime was a dark work of art, one that could only truly be appreciated by those who comprehended its interactive means of storytelling.

1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: MAJORA'S MASK

Majora's Mask

Hands down the most mature and darkest game Nintendo ever crafted, Majora's Mask is also probably the most unsettling entry in the Zelda franchise, and amongst its very best. Tackling themese such as the inevitability of death, and a desperate race against time to fight for a corrupted land, Majora's Mask stands head and shoulders above most modern games on the market in just how well it tackled those themes, and how deftly it incorporated them into its gameplay. The world remembers Ocarina of Time as the series defining masterpiece, but it was Majora's Mask that truly represented the coming of age, for both, the N64 and the Zelda series as well.

Which of those is your favourite?

But then, so are games like GTA. Conker makes the cut purely because of its content. Dont worry, there are at least three other truly mature games to keep you busy on that list ;)

It was pobably the first and last game that actually messed about with the player. I think the only thing that comes close is the Mantis boss fight in the original MGS.

Also @charizard1605, since you added Rare games. You should have added Perfect Dark. That had a pretty good Mature theme as well. I know it's on XBLA as well, but that Conker you added later came to the XBOX.

I know, but there were only five slots. Since Goldeneye was more influential, I added that instead of perfect dark :)

Only Majora's Mask was actually created by Nintendo (Retro Studios might be owned by Nintendo, but they were not taught their talents by Nintendo)... and only Eternal Darkness is the one game on the list I would label as truly "mature" in every regard. Conker's Bad Fur Day is mostly immature potty humour. Goldeneye is just violence. Metroid Prime... why is Prime mature? You don't even say in your description of it, you just praise it endlessly. And Majora's Mask is dark and gritty compared to other Zelda games, and is quite mature in its content compared to most Nintendo games... but really, it is still accessible to children and doesn't deal exclusively with adult dilemmas.

Nintendo doesn't make mature games. And I'm not sure why anyone would want them to?

it is hilarious that sheep are still trying to defend nintendo. out of all the games on you're list, nintedo made 1 of them. they published the other 4. nintedo makes cartoon character drivin games. thats what they do. they do not do shooters, sim racing, or hack n slash. they do not do real music and open world story drivin games with real voice acting. i thought people excepted this.

And here we have the example of the other extreme end of the spectrum.

Yes, because Metroid is totally a "cartoon character" game.

Super Mario Galaxy had a completely orchestrated soundtrack.

Metroid Other M has full voice acting.

dont be so harsh, if your going by the "different developers" argument so retro studios and others that are owned by nintendo dont count.

whats left for sony and MS? That argument would make their first party non-existent, atleast nintendo makes some games themself.

no sucker punch, no bungie, no naughty dog, no nothing :(

well if you wanna brag about other M's voice acting then you obviously do not play games. and samus is not a mature character. sorry. you are obviously a nintendo fanboy with the reggie poster and the yoshi pillow so i understand you do not like people telling you the truth, but it is what it is. live with it or don't, i could care less. i find it sad that you had to jump in to the rescue to prove a point and you pick a pile of garbage like other M to do it.

fact: i like most of what nintendo does but i know the reality is that if i wanna more adult based game the nintendo systems will be the last place i look.

Majora's Mask is my favourite out of those... The moment when the camera pans up and you see the moon in the sky with that horrible expression on its face slowly getting closer and closer... I've never felt such a profound sense of dread :(

well if you wanna brag about other M's voice acting then you obviously do not play games. kobraka1

I play a lot of games, actually... and have been since about 1990. And most of the voice acting in games I've played hasn't really been that good. Too many games have it "just for the sake of having it" and it only creates a detriment (i.e. TESIV: Oblivion, a game I love, but hate the VA's).

and samus is not a mature character. sorry.kobraka1

I don't ever remember claiming as such (recently at least, or in this thread). Nice try though.

you are obviously a nintendo fanboy with the reggie poster and the yoshi pillow so i understand you do not like people telling you the truth, but it is what it is. live with it or don't, i could care less.kobraka1

Well, I am a Nintendo fanboy... but not the one that worships the ground they walk on and blindly praise everything they make. I don't know what "truth" you are trying to get across here, because I did a fair job refuting your claims about Nintendo "not using real music and real voice acting" (despite them doing so). Oh yeah, and its: "I could not (or couldn't) care less."

i find it sad that you had to jump in to the rescue to prove a point and you pick a pile of garbage like other M to do it.

fact: i like most of what nintendo does but i know the reality is that if i wanna more adult based game the nintendo systems will be the last place i look.

kobraka1

So what exactly makes Other M "a pile of garbage." I've been hearing its a pretty solid game.

And considering how you seem to hold Nintendo with regard to the game's content, I find it odd how you would "like" what they offer.

With a attitude like yours i'd be suprised if you are capable of playing games with a Mature rating as your quite clearly not a adult.

be honest, adult rating is a more appropriate term, because there is nothing mature about most of the games with an adult rating.

Half of those aren't even M-rated. I dare Nintendo to internally develop an M-rated game.

Defend Nintendo from what? Why does one need to defend the best game developer in the world? Also: The original NES Legend of Zelda was the first open world game ever. Guess who developed that? Super Mario Galaxy 2 has orchestral music. Guess who developed that. Majora's Mask is a story driven game. Guess who developed that? Other M has voice acting. Guess who developed that? Ah, but haters gonna hate

Half of those aren't even M-rated. I dare Nintendo to internally develop an M-rated game.

Yeah, because a game totally needs to be M rated to be mature

▲ If a rated E game was mature, it wouldn't be rated E. Without having the ESRB rating, it's all just opinion. Not saying that ESRB is not an opinion in itself, but it's something to base and argument off of. ▲

"Maturity" is not defined by violence, nudity, sex and coarse language. Some of the most immature games are rated M. True matruity comes through in the tone, themes and character's reactions to in-game events. Usually something that has adult-oriented decisions, or dilemmas is a mature game... not something where you go around blowing body parts off victims.

I think a great example of this would be Prince of Persia [2008] and Shadow of the Colossus. Both games deal with some seriously adult dilemmas (whether or not to end the world to save a friend/love, attack beings that did nothing to you, and put the entire world in jeopardy for the one you love, etc.) and yet came out with T ratings.

Now Eternal Darkness... there is a "mature" game that well deserves its M rating.

How 'mature' a game is is not determined by how many F boms or bare breasts it has, but by the underlying themses that the game tackles. A game like Majora's Mask or Metroid Prime is infinitely more mature than any of the so called mature FPSs or GTAs on the market.

I'd like you to explain why. You never addressed this in the OP. What makes Metroid Prime "mature"? Its a great game, with an astonishing atmosphere... but that doesn't make it mature. You never really have to face any dilemmas or adult-decisions... and most of the time you are either exploring a world empty of other sentient life (that speaks to you at least) or fighting off deadly foes (at least on Hard mode :3).

Whoever says Ocarina of Time is better than Majora's Mask shouldn't have the right to play a Nintendo game. MM was one of Nintendo's finest hours.

Mostly because it plays on the one theme that terrfifies me the most: isolation. You have one person alone in a hostile environment, squaring off against an unknown foe, uncovering a terible ancient secret, powerless and fighting for your survival. That actually makes it more mature than a, say, Saints Row game. Sure, there are no weighty moral decisions, and no complexity in the traditional sense of the word, but the dark underpinnings hint at more than meets the eye- as is indeed the case, as we find out in Prime 2.
