So there seems to be a myth that Nintendo doesn't create mature games... WRONG! Listed below are five games developed and/or published by Nintendo or its subidariesthat are arguably more mature than anything on the market even today:
5. ETERNAL DARKNESS: SANITY'S REQUIEM
Arguably one of the only few horror games ever created, Eternal Darkness has the distinction of being the only true psychological thriller game. The idea of the main protagonist losing a grip on reality, and the enemies, the character's moves and the environments changing accordingly is truly ground breaking and mind bending. It certainly is sad that more people didn't buy this, but those that di will agree with this that they were treated to what is one of the most unique games of all time.
4. CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY
You want raunchy? You got raunchy? Beneath the adorable cartoony exterior of this game was the most innuendo clad, outrageously crude dialog ever seen in any game until then. Riding on the success of all their other N64 efforts, Rare crafted not only what was considered the finest looking game on the N64, not to mention one that probably appealed to the mature crowd the most, but also a hell of a platformer, one that's right up there with Banjo and Mario 64 in terms of just how finely it played.
3. GOLDENEYE 007
The game that birthed the modern console shooter was a damn fine adaption of a Bond movie that hadn't been that good to begin with. Till this date, it stands as a towering achievment, demonstrating not only how purportedly incompatible genres should be introduced to consoles, but also how movie based tie in games should be made, and what kind of production value and finesse a game should have. It may not have aged all that well, but Goldeneye 007 is inaruably the game that is single handedly responsble for all the console FPSs we see today.
2. METROID PRIME
It's hard to do Metroid Prime any justice. Words cannot even begin to describe how great this game was. However, the thing that probably stands out more than anything else about this stellar masterpiece is its atmosphere, that elevated this game to the lofty status which it holds today, and which imbued the game with an eerie hue, and a dark sense of foreboding. With a rich lore and a dark backstory which hinted at something ominous, Metroid Prime was a dark work of art, one that could only truly be appreciated by those who comprehended its interactive means of storytelling.
1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: MAJORA'S MASK
Hands down the most mature and darkest game Nintendo ever crafted, Majora's Mask is also probably the most unsettling entry in the Zelda franchise, and amongst its very best. Tackling themese such as the inevitability of death, and a desperate race against time to fight for a corrupted land, Majora's Mask stands head and shoulders above most modern games on the market in just how well it tackled those themes, and how deftly it incorporated them into its gameplay. The world remembers Ocarina of Time as the series defining masterpiece, but it was Majora's Mask that truly represented the coming of age, for both, the N64 and the Zelda series as well.
