The Wii dies in Japan

It is all PlayStation in Japan this week; thus nature balances itself.

Despite rumours of a revamped Playstation Portable on its way, the PSP has hit the lead on Japanese sales charts, eclipsing the Nintendo DS (and DSi) with as 67 percent increase over the previous week.

The figures below come from Media Create and represent sales from March 2nd through 8th.

- PSP: 59,568 +23,980 (67.38%)
- PS3: 39,835 +3,322 (9.10%)
- DSi: 32,102 -3,725 (10.40%)
- Wii: 16,560 -1,316 (7.36%)
- Xbox 360: 14,994 +3,199 (27.12%)
- DS Lite: 11,240 -534 (4.54%)
- PS2: 4,954 -145 (2.84%)

I am frankly hoping this is a start of a trend, as I'm seriously sick of seeing the Wii on top everywhere for the past 2 years without any games to justify it.

I'm glad the Wii has been knocked off, and i'm thinking this has a lot to do with the recent game announcements coming from Sony. Hopefully this trend should increase.

The PSP seems to have had much more backing recently. Hopefully this should equal some great things for it. I'm gonna buy the DSi when it releases in NA as it offers some good things over the DS Lite.

I did not know this, I thought the DSI was still relativly new, and was very popular in japan.

No, it has more to do with Street Fighter 4, Biohazard 5, and Yakuza 3 coming out. lol sony games hardly move units in Japan these days. Things will be back to normal by the end of April gaurenteed.

It's really funny how all the Sony fans have come out of the woodwork after one good month for Sony. The PS3 is not making a comeback in Japan, especially with the low numbers they are putting up. It's good that they are selling more, but you guys are really jumping ahead of yourselves if you think the Wii is dead.Zhengi

DS sales will jump next week like the PSP did as it will also get new colours.

Anyway NPD will probably show US PS3 and PSP sales plunge over 20% and the Wii up over 60%, year over year. Fact is the PS3 has only hit about 40,000 on the back of mutiple big name games shows us it has a very low peak. Though it looks like all platforms will have alot lower sales this year in Japan, even the DS and PSP aren't pulling 100,000+ weeks.

Hopefully it stays this way for a while and Nintendo starts putting good games on Wii.

Just because it got outsold for a month doesn't mean it's dead. The PS3 recently had a surge of games they wanted, so the console's sales had a sudden surge. The wii has already sold enough units to be considered a success and you can safely bet that it will return to the top now that most of the people who wanted these PS3 games now has them.

That's just it though, there is nothing odd about it. Have you seen the wii release list for Japan? Virtually no games have come out and certainly none that hold any relevancy in Japan. Street Fighter 4, Biohazard 5 and Yakuza 3, that is why the PS3 number are higher, that is the only reason. Again, the 360 recently had Star Ocean 4 which is a huge franchise in Japan which is why it has high numbers. When Monster Hunter G launches, the wii numbers will be up again.

Wii has some great games, it just needs some more of the same... I just don't see enough of the games I enjoy. I'm looking into getting one, once it gets a few more JRPG releases

the wii will sell much better when those 2 come out but don't ne shocked to not see a huge boost. After all the Wii has a huge base in Japan, also don't forget the likes of FF13, FFv13 and MGS5 which will come out in Japan too.

Still I doubt the PS3 will catch the wii.

Don't expect Monster Hunter on the Wii to post high numbers though. No Monster Hunter game on consoles has broken over 1mil sales yet. The ones that do are all on the PSP.

I expect it to sell over a million. The push Capcom is going to give the game is huge. They is a lot of pressure for this game to succeed and I think Capcom is going to try extremely hard to make it succeed.

I think it will continue to sell well, once more games come out for it in Japan. Me personally, I am not a Wii fan. I don't hate Nintendo or anything, in fact I grew up with Nintendo but playing the Wii was fun at first, but gameplay is so shallow compared to what the Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 offer.

Since sells are being brought up. The wii has outsold the ps3 in every country across the world. It has sold more in japan, america, and other places. One month is nothing. When MH3 hits japan, this thread would have seemed pointless. Even though it is.

I wish this would force the wii to release better games...sadly i doubt that. There is a lot of great AAA games that came out for ps3 recently so, its expected.
