I keep reading about how Wii is killing the xbox and PS3 in sales and its kinda funny, do you guys really think they're in the same market? Wii is targeting kids and casual gamers who may not have even played games in the last 10 years, the people who like FPS games, RPGS, fighting games, etc, basically any game thats targeted towards a mature audience have no interest in a wii.

Obviously casual gamers make up more of the population than the hardcore and this is fine, but if you think the Wiis sales have any impact on the PS3 or Xbox you're wrong, its the XBOX and ps3 that are competing against each other because they target the same type of gamer. The wii will be successful from a business standpoint but to all you people who think you're gonna see halo, MGS, socom, GTA4, etc type games on the Wii I think you're very mistaken, nintendo caters to children and the casual gamer and these games just aren't casual or kiddy.

Nintendo has two target Demographics.

Gamers, and Non-gamers/'casuals'.

They put a heavier emphasis on the non-games and 'casuals', but still go after the 'hardcore' crowd.

If you think that's how the market works, you need to read a little more.

Actually the Wii isnt really competing with PS3/XBOX360 . Your 100% right on that one. WII wont kill any company. The "war" if you like to call it like that is between 360 and ps3 as they fight over the same group of customers. The Wiis audience is different.

Thats why most many people buy a "real" console (Wii owners please forgive me this phrase) and a Wii. The Wii for having fun with friends and the XBOX, PS, for more serious gaming and competitional online play. One doesnt hurt the sales of the other. So the WII is kind of a "Niche" (urrr its "Nische" in german, hope i got that one right) Product, that appeals to a big market. But in its function as an entertainment system it differs enough from usual consoles to not get in theyr way.

Youll notice that difference if you look at the price too.

Nintendo wouldnt had stood a chance if they tried to get some of Sonys or Microsofts target groups. They thought out a concept thats working nice and doesnt have any real competition right now. Thats good for them, but not bad for the others.

Nice thread, hope some people think different after reading.

If I hadn't have got the Wii I would have gotten an Xbox 360. As it is, I will get a 360 eventually, after the price drops, but there is an example of the Wii competing with the xbox.

people keep fighting too much with "xbox or ps" ... so with that, most of the time when people buy 2 consoles of this gen it will be a wii + a box or a ps

Sure, there are exceptions. I guess you not the average 12 years old standing necxt to your mom in the market, both being exited about the wii: The mom because her little one is doing something "sporty", the little man for having a colourful toy."

I DONT say wii is for kids... actually id buy one if i didnt have paid 600 euros for a bluray player ... but: The main audience of the Wii is not a gamer like you.

Youll notice that by watching the people. ... mommies arent really interested in buying some stuff like a 360 for there babies. The Wii ... well: "he wont go "massacre" with playing mario wont he?"

edit: oh and even I wouldnt buy my kid a 360 oder PS .... but i would probably "Wii" him :) Thats the way it is. And thats the main market of those 8 million (or more?) cute little Wii boxes.

I see where you're coming from but I disagree. I'm a hardcore gamer and I decided to go with Nintendo this gen. I also happen to be 15. Many of the other people who own a Wii that I know are well into their 20s. I see Nintendo competing with 360 and PS3 but their using a different method to compete with them by doing what the PS1 and PS2 did; attract the casuals. Of course to many people that had a whole different meaning back then. Does that mean the PS1 and PS2 didn't compete? No.

System wars is basically debating which system is better, which sometime gets a little if not a lot out of hand. By debating which system is better we find categories to judge them on. Things like as an example of this gen: Games, multimedia, power, online, price, sales. The Wii does attract casuals but at the same time attracts "hardcores". If you look at it logically, I doubtthat casuals would go onto a gaming forum to discuss the Wii and look at reviews and be in system wars, right?

Well said, my friend. I can prove your ideas by mentioning the fact that most people who own a PS3 or Xbox 360 also own a Wii, but the gamers who own a PS3 usually don't own an Xbox 360, and vice versa.

I'm a coregamer and i had the money for a 360 but isaid to myself heywhy not play with my entire family having fun, with great franchises to back it up.

Wii attracts everyone. Not just casual gamers and kids. I think Nintendo realizes that they have more core gamers thats why theres is more M games (Godfather,Manhunt,ScarFace,etc..). I agree they targeta little more slightlyto non gamers to bring them in but they have not forgotten there core gamers.

And about the market thingI believe they are in the same market....VIDEO GAMES!!

I rest my case...

Correct, but the fact that there are still a lot of Wii fanboys on this forum does prove that Wii also attracts hardcore gamers.

No, the Wii passed those other consoles well before now lol

I mean second place is up for grabs these days but there's no way a company is going to get close to the Wii/DS domination.

I'll own all three consoles one day but for now I'm content with my Wii until the other two consoles start coming out with games. Looks like the rest of the world is thinking the same way too.

You wont find any casuals in forums i guess :) But lots of them inform themselves before buying.... they arent plain stupid hehe.

Your points just underline my statements. You tell me... i am not a kid.... my friends are buying Wii too.(yes your points make sense) ,sure, but you and all those other people here are not the main target the Wii and the whole campaign adresses. Its those gamers that are NOT posting on forums that buy the Wii. So, your just a small part of the Wii owners and thus an exeption.

Noticed, that there are so much more "Lemmings" on this forum than anything else? Its not because Gamespot is "green", its because people buying the MS Product are more... well .... interested in the things around theyr consoles. (I tried to avoyed "hardcore" cause thats probably the most stupid phrase.) That means: The people "defending" the Wii (and only the Wii)here arent the average Wii Buyers.

Your point with PSX and PS2 make sense too ... but there was no other choice that "casuals" had. They had to get one of Sony's Products to play theyr games. Its different this gen. The companys difined theyr aim pretty much with theyr games library.

The Wii is attracting casuals, thatsthe point. I 100% agree. Do you know whats the age of the richest casuals?

P.S. Please note its my opinion. Your opinion may differ from whats written up there. ;)

edit: oh yeah, and Ferrari, BMW and VW all target drivers ... thats the market :) Think again about that one please!

Nope, the Wii is competing against the PS3 and 360 but uses a different approach. The console may not be directed towards the same gamers but it is still a gaming console and so are the other two. The Wii isn't even competing against the ps2 like others say because it is a next gen console so it is up against the PS3 and 360 and is currently whooping their butts.

I Dont get it .... the gaming market isnt just one big homogeneous market. There are different groups to be referrered to. This begins with price and ends with customer age. Hell, even regional and national likes and dislikes have to be counted into. How can you think 2 products that are looking and are both named "consoles" are impossible to be meant for different groups?

Like for example ... take money. It isnt a really deciding factor for me and many others here on the forum. I am sure there are people that cant buy a big console for the full price.

As the PSX started, Sony claimed their aim would be 18-25 years old. The aim of Nintendo clearly differed from that. Consoles started to widen theyr targeted marketgroup as they became more and more succesfull. Just look at the PSX its the best example.

Its not just "for gamers". You really think life is that easy for the companys? Nope, it isnt. Just try to take an unbiased thought about the whole thing and you will probably even notice some of the easiest market structurs.

Are you that naiv, that youthink Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo hasnt people that do market research? (Well, I dont know about sony hehe looks like they didnt :) ).

ITs not for kids. i never said that. But its for younger people .... actually the unability to discuss a matter like that with the wii-customers just underlines my points.

If you may handle a car with 16 (or even with 18) .... would you call yourself "grown-up" with that age? If yes, you arent. Ifyou said "no", you still arent, but your a bit closer to it:)

Have fun.
