Nintendo's Wii Widens Lead Over Sony's PS3 in Japan in May

June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the world's third- biggest maker of video-game players, widened its lead in Japan last month after its Wii consoles and DS portable players outsold products from Sony Corp., a research firm said.

Nintendo sold 251,794 of its newest game machines in May, outselling Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles five to one, Tokyo- based research firm Enterbrain Inc. said today in a faxed statement. The PS3 trailed the Wii by four to one in April.

The PS3, equipped with the industry's most powerful gaming chip, is falling further behind the cheaper Wii, undermining Sony's ability to recoup investments into the machine. Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo has forecast sales of the new consoles, where gamers swing motion-sensor controllers to play games such as bowling and tennis, will triple this fiscal year.

Microsoft Corp.'s game-player sales trailed Sony's in Japan last month, with the U.S. company selling 11,082 of its Xbox 360 machines, the Enterbrain report said.

Nintendo's handheld DS player outsold Sony's PlayStation Portable five to one in May, Enterbrain said. The company sold 620,670 of the touch-screen players, compared with 123,673 PSPs.

at this point it's becoming doubtful.  FFXIII is still a long way off and FF titles tend to only get a very short spike in interest (2-4 weeks). the ps3 needs lasting interest to have any chance at catching up.

Yes, but that spike is huge. FF games are always among the top-rated and most-wanted games in all areas, especially Japan.

But if the PS3 doesn't get on the ball, I wouldn't bet on FF13 being a PS3 exclusive.

Have you ever noticed that threads like this never mention the ratio of Wii Japanese sales to Xbox 360 Japanese sales? Why is that, I wonder. :roll:Dire_Weasel

Cause the Xbox360 was never a real player in the japanese market while pre-E3 Sony was expected to dominate, instead is bombing nearly as bad as the Xbox360 something nobody predicted 2 years ago.

The way things are going, Wii WILL get DQX! DQ traditionally come out at the end of a console's life and ONLY on the console with the highest install base in Japan! And the rate things are going, it's looking moer and more likely like the Wii.....Why the heck do you think DQIX is on of all things, DS?!?!? DS is RAPING everyone right now, ESPECIALLY in Japan and SE'd actually be kinda dumb not to make the game on the DS!
