I dont get it. Why a 2001 console can output 720p while a 2006 console cant, even though it said to be 2x more powerful than the XBOX?

it isnt, and I personally see it as overrated but this has been bugging me since, well, 2006.I don't see why HD is needed honestly.
Yandere
Wait, when was this said? It's common knowledge that it is on par with the original Xbox in terms of power.
You know I don't think the 360/PS3 got much to brag about "HD" But yes the resolution output of the Wii is pretty poor but I think ppl have been trhough this too many times to bother anymore. Ninendo wanted a cheap, profitable console based around the waggle hype instead of hardware.
The original Xbox was able to render a few of its games at a 720p resolution, and the Wii is said to be only 1.5X as powerful as the gamecube according to Beyond3D, take it as you will, but the resolution wouldn't change the other problems the Wii and original xbox faced, of low res textures, and low poly counts, etc...
Because this is 2009 and more than half of us here use a HDTV for gaming? Have you actually hooked up a non-HD console to an HDTV? Do you know how bad it looks?I don't see why HD is needed honestly.
Yandere
I'm guessing if I disagreed with that you'd give me some long tech talk that I wouldn't understand explaining how the Wii can do HD. :PThe Wii can do HD.

Considering HD gaming was around in 1998 bringing the whole "its 2009!" argument isnt a very good one. Consoles have adopted it at whatever time they felt like it. They never bothered to keep up with HD in the first place.

I'd guess he'd simple it down to an example of running Crysis on a supercomputer. While you could run Crysis at 2560 x 1600 with everything set to maximum for 300 frames per second, some people would rather have Crysis running at 640 x 480 with everything somehow set beyond maximum at 3000 frames per second. :P
Computers have to do hundreds of calculations to figure out what exact color a pixel should be. Throw in the fact that they have to do this 30 times a second for thousands, if not millions of pixels and you'll see why the top devs don't try for HD resolutions on any console. It's just a significant drop in overall quality for a few thousand extra pixels.

EXACTLY, thank you, if you own an LCD HDTV screen, playing wii is torture. Its half the reason I can't stand the console, that and the fact the the games are too casual. I'm all for pick up and play, but wii takes it to the next level.[QUOTE="opex07"]

Half the games this gen are sub HD, so why does it matter?
Hanass
The majority of games on the 360/PS3 this gen are 720p or higher(HD).
Resolution list
Where does it say "the majority"? All I see is a list.
You can look through the list and see the ratio between games that are sub HD, and HD, and see the majority are HD.Because this is 2009 and more than half of us here use a HDTV for gaming? And how many homes had an HD tv inthem in 1998 andNOW how many homes have HD tv's in them in 2009? ;)
But yeah, I agree, I bought an 40" HD TV for my room that outputs 720p and when I first hooked my wii up to it I was pretty shocked, it looked just awfull!

In 1998 - I don't know many people who owned an HDTV. I don't know what point you're trying to make. PCs adopted HD first, but we're talking about something entirely different. I'm saying that most people these days own an HDTV and play their console on it. 600p smokes 480p - even if 600p isn't even that great. 480p these days is just sorta inexcusable.[QUOTE="smartcriminal"]

Pretty much. I honestly don't see the problem. You're really pretending this is a graphics argument? It's not about graphics. It's about picture quality.Oh, I play Ps2 and Ps1 games on my HDTV and nothing is wrong with them, I guess people are too picky about graphics?

Same, I play my PS2 on my HDTV as well and I don't really have any complaints.

Stop what your doing, get in your car or the bus/train and go to an optometrist, because if you think there is nothing wrong with it, you need your eyes checked

Exactly.
Also, where did you get x2 from?
This, can't understand why people make a big deal out of it.
Isnt it only supposed to be 10% more powerful than the xbox? I think when HD tvs become a normalty in households Nintendo will have a console with HD options
The best looking games on Xbox were 480p at best. The Wii is only like 10-15% more powerful than the Xbox and not many devs have put forth the effort to make good looking games so the Xbox still has a lot of games that look better than most of what the Wii has to offer.
I've heard 2x GameCube, but never 2x Xbox. Wii isn't even 2x as powerful as the GC, maybe 50% more powerful at best.
HD is still not standard. And HD does not equate to power.OreoMilkshakeHD = more pixels to rendor = more power needed to render per frame.
My first computer which was far less powerful then a Wii was capable of running computer games in high resolutions. Trust me, from a raw power perspective the Wii is more then powerful enough to run HD games the hardware was just set to output 480p. Why did Nintendo do this and not leave up to devs? probably because the Wii is really just a souped up gamecube and that's what the gamecube was set at. Personally I wish Nintendo would've allowed 720p output. I bet there would have been some really impressive 2D games on it. Even the 3D stuff could have been cool, I mean it would be even more simple then the 3D stuff that runs at 480p but it still could have looked cool with proper art direction.

Yea, I hooked up my PS2 and GC to my HDTV. Nothing wrong with that, or do the pixels annoy you that much? I hooked up my SNES not too long ago and played Yoshi's Island with my gf on my 32" HDTV and surprisingly, it looked even better somehow. O.o I mean, it wasn't like a graphical upgrade, but I expected heavy pixelated pictures, and bad quality, but instead I get a really clean and crisp picture (a bit of interlacing but hardly noticeable unless you were super close) and a picture that actually does a good job filling up the entire screen (had no clue if it was my SNES doing that or the t.v. ) So... I dunno who worries much but if my SNES can do a good job on HDTVs, I have no quarrels about any other system lacking HD :PI don't see why HD is needed honestly.

No they don't. There's a reason SD stands for standard definition.
