"Let's take 20k as the average and let's take six weeks. The game is 14GB, so let's assume that on an average not-too-fast connection it will be six hours of download. Six weeks is 56 days, which equals to 1344 hours; and with six hours of average download time to get the game it would give us 224 downloads, then let's multiply it by 20k simultaneous downloaders. How did he come up with that number ?

Seems legit.

Seems like the person is calculating a lot based on hunches and guesses... what I meant to ask was solid evidence not speculation. It might have been calculated but I think this number might be a stretch.
Shows that wise devs don't care about piracy at all and instead concentrate on what really matters: those customers that do pay.
Sooo, where are now those people who claimed that PC exclusives sell great if they're well-made ? :P
How many of those were the 360 version?lowe0
The 360 version hasn't been released yet :?

They do, I think this is a bit of a set up. Nobody would make such calculation based on speculation and call it a fact to go on to make decisions such as making PC games would be a waste. Honestly.... the game wasn't so good that 4.5m would download it :P
How many people pirated pokemon? and yet look at all the copies it has sold world wide :o
It didn't sell well?Sooo, where are now those people who claimed that PC exclusives sell great if they're well-made ? :P

What excuse to pirates have for pirating a game with no DRM? That seems like a strange question to me.Pug-NastyPirates usually like to say how pirating is justified to avoid the nuisance that be DRM as a pirated copy offers a far better service i.e. a digtal copy without the DRM nuisance. In this case, however, where the game literally has no DRM, it becomes evident that pirates are not simply trying to avoid the annoyances that come with DRM, but are just filthy thieves.

the final act was way too rushed.
disclaimer - i do not endorse piracy. i purchased my game legally.
That really sucks. I can understand why other developers put some type of DRM to try to fight piracy.istreakforfoodRead the source article.

Hey, I'm right here.
How does the game being pirated affect the fact that it sold over a million copies in 6 months?
Demon souls ont he PS3 sold 400,00 thousand copies, Ps3 must be pirated way worse than the PC!
[QUOTE="Pug-Nasty"]Free games ? Exactly. Getting a better service out of piracy or simply not wanting that DRM crap are at least somewhat reasonable excuses, but not paying up at all? Scum. What excuse to pirates have for pirating a game with no DRM? That seems like a strange question to me.

tsk tsk, such a sad thing, i guess it has to be popular for it to have been downloaded that many times, but seriously, if these people cant wait for the game to go on sale for less than 25 bucks then they really shouldnt be gamers

Well, they need some way to stop piracy that doesn't hurt the customers. But devs should care about piracy, the numbers are absurd, and until a better way to slow piracy is created I support any measures devs take, including leaving the PC market altogether. I also support things like online passes. I'd rather they not require them, but I don't blame them at all. I blame pirates and Gamestops ridiculous practices and those who support them.Shows that wise devs don't care about piracy at all and instead concentrate on what really matters: those customers that do pay.

A new IP sales with a lower user base against a sequels sales with a high userbase, not really a fair comparison :?

No kidding, games do go on sale and drop in price quickly. Add to that, PC gamers have Steam and their ridiculous deals. Of course their is an excuse. It's FREE. Hard to beat that. I downloaded through a torrent once, and I have purchased the game myself. GOG was being slow. Some people may have downloaded it twice, or never finished downloading it. There was no demo, and the game was visually incredibly impressive at its time. There are people who used it as a demo, or to see whether it would run and how. But I'm sure the majority did it to have it for free.tsk tsk, such a sad thing, i guess it has to be popular for it to have been downloaded that many times, but seriously, if these people cant wait for the game to go on sale for less than 25 bucks then they really shouldnt be gamers

Are you saying there are more PC gamers than PS3 gamers?
Because you're right, but on the other hand the Witcher 1 wasn't very popular, and Demon Souls had WAY more marketing than the Witcher 2 had behind it.

Skyrim now has 100 thousand leechers, had 200 thousand on release, it's a 6gb game, that means in six weeks Skyrim is going to get pirated 70 million times. As long as the data is placed somewhere on your HDD witch it will have to be in order to be played pirated will get to it.These pirates aren't going to like it much when cloud streaming takes over. Ha.

I said it once and i ll say it twice; start USING BLU RAY DISC for pc gaming, I KNOW IT MIGHT NOT BE NEEDED, but if you own a 1K pc then you probably have money to buy games, but downloading is easier right? what about if the download was 45gb> ? would you wait a full day to play that game you wanted or would you go to the store and get it? more people would just buy it. Also i dont care just put uncompressed audio or whatever BUT MAKE IT BIG !Solid_Tango
They would still pirate. They're still getting a free game, extending downloads would only be a minor inconvenience. That would also hurt legit sales for the same reason.

I knew one guy who pirated PC games because he couldn't buy them too often. He only purchased one BF game I think. I knew another guy who at least said that he pirated games to try them before buying them. I don't know how truthful he was being.
Neither of those people are these types of pirates, nor does that excuse make any sense to begin with. I dislike your DRM, so I'll steal your game, thus justifying the existence of your DRM?

Not only will this kill part of their DD sales, but users like myself who have a a bandwidth cap would avoid buying it in the first place. This must be how developers come up with ideas to stop piracy and up their drm.
On topic: People who pirated this games are nothing but cheapskates, specially a game that has a drm free version on GOG. I did my part, hell i even introduced 3 of my friends to the witcher series.

It's a shame to see people do this. If there's any developers out there that deserve your money for their work, it's CD Projekt.

It's obviously not justified if the game still gets stolen. :P"Let's take 20k as the average and let's take six weeks. Dang, I wish I can download that fast. 14GB takes me 28 hours at best to download. Though I just got a new ISP last night and I can get it in 10 hours! Not talking about the game specifically, just how fast peoples connection are. :(And yet, the developers can't prove that they've lost ANY money as a result of the pirating. I could have several games that I want downloaded by the end of the week...all for free. But instead, I buy my games, because it's easier to just buy them, and I'm an interested buyer in the first place.
The people pirating these games obviously aren't interested buyers...otherwise they would have bought it in the first place.
Nothing was stolen from the developers. Stores aren't missing copies of The Witcher 2. In effect, these "numbers" are completely meaningless, because they prove absolutely nothing.
