Sorry if old.

From Kotaku.

This is the Sapphire Radeon HD 5970, and it's apparently the world's fastest production video card. Which it had want to be, with a price tag hovering around the $700 mark.

It's got an overclocked ATI GPU that's running at 850mhz, three large (and surely cosmetic) fans and, as you can see in the middle there, one enormous heatsink. Oh, and it also has 4GB of GDDR5 RAM. So yes. With a 3DMark Vantage score of 22,000, it will run Crysis.

So what do you think??

Too expensive only no one would buy it, like what PS3 did at launch.

This is obviously for PC enthusiasts that spend more on their rigs than on their cars, houses and food.

Top of the line never was worth the performance per dollar, but if you simply want the best of the best, nothing holds back PC gamers from experiencing true next-gen titles, at any point in any gen, as long as they have the money to spill.

Not to mention new PC videocards drop their prices fast, due to the ever-evolving technology of PC gaming. What is 700$ at the beginning of this year will be 350$ by the end of the year, and titles that were near the top of the line last year fall (400-500$ initial launch price) falls to mainstream adoption pricing (150-250$). PC gamers are free to choose how much to spend, and evaluate what will be their prime price-to-performance ratio.

This card alone is more powerful than multiple 360's or PS3's combined, in terms of gigaflops.

I wish a manufacturer other than Sapphire would release such a card. I may be biased, but I always found Sapphire's craftsmanship to be... well, budgeted.

but your really not going to get the best out the card for a while i think maybe in sectors like 3d CGI it would be usefull but in gamesi dont think you will see the bet out it till even after Crysis 2.It just seems such a waste but a good waste of money bit like the veyron its just doing it to be the first and nothing else.Just an expensive PR exercise in a sense.I mean what gamer is going to just throw that kinda cash at a GPU its just madness especially when you could build a 2nd rig thats pretty powerful in that kinda budget.

This card will get sales and last gamers a while........it's the first and the most powerful too. I can assure you this is not a PR stunt with Nvidia finding it hard to keep up.

how so i think its an astronomical waste of money in all senses of the word.Thats just my view why pay over the odds for something you wont need right now and by the time its needed there will be far more efficient GPU's out hauling the same sort of power.I just find this is just a waste of money.I mean theres cards that perform extremely well for half the price and at this price you could buy a 2nd computer with a good amount of power.

agreed, in fact, now you don't have to build up your rigs gorgeously because just dual core+ medium GPU and you can play almost entire games this gen exactly.

mine just e5200+HD4870, it seems to me honestly there are no game that my rigs can't handle even Crysis or GTAIV(medium setting)

It is not a waste of money it is an excellent investment if you want to play games with 2560x1600, high AA and AF and of course to have 60fps minimum. People that say that it is a "waste of money" are just jealous because they don't have the money to buy one...

lemme tell you honestly, yes you are right. If you have enough power spending money playing the games with 2560x1600, high AA and AF and of course to have 60fps minimum. It's very very good experience that all of gamers would have right ? I agree at that point.

But All of these are really need exactly ? What's about playing with 1080p or even 720p with 40+ fps using normal dual core+medium GPU specs which are more powerful than all of console could do definitely as well.

Finally, my suggestion for whoever want to play the game more quality than console but lower the price than spending for super PC machine. :)

Yes , especially for cpu quad core.

just few games have supported on quad core and finally get the same performance with dual core such as GTAIV:(

holy crap...thats alot fo grunt and no mistake. personally im not a fan of multi-GPU though. your way to depndant on support from both games and ati/nvidia supporting it. i much prefer a strong single GPU such as a HD 5870. i do like the idea of using one for graphics and only dor physics though (eg a gtx 480 for graphics and something like a 9800gt/gts250/whatever nvidia are calling it this week :P). really powerful solution....on paper at least.

You thought wrong...A 500$ PC will probably run every multiplat thrown at it, with medium-high settings and it will look better than consoles. If you put it together yourself pre-built will get you nowhere. But Maxing out Crysis is way beyond that.

You want to know why i think its a waste of money? because its POINTLESS imho, i also laugh cause your claiming i have no money and jealous of it lol think of a better arguement you can find a game that is extremely competant, plays games at high res, good AA rates and 60FPS and these said rigs could be built for around the same price as this card.

I mean i pay this kind of money for an bassamp which is a Laney RB9 and 4x12 cab,but i refuse to pay around 2k for an Ampeg cause i find its an astronomical waste for something that already fulfills a function well and does me fine all i see this is the same as snobbery and e-peen measuring.Yet they could save astronomical amounts on hardware that is good and does its job well...seriously when will you ever need this kind of power i mean claiming it as an investment what you exepect to make money back off it.

my question is. What games have we got coming out that will show a reason to buy this card lets say over a standard 5970 or just a 5870. I saw some crysis being thrown around... nice game from 2007 so what about something new :D.

Well, there's the ASUS RoG Ares.

XFX is also prepping one as well. I'm always about PC gaming but even to me dropping 700 to 1,000 bucks on this is kind of extreme. This is kind of like when ATI dropped the X1950 XTX in '05 or '06 which boasted 512MB VRAM and GDDR4 memory which at the time was totally unheard of and nobody took it seriously because it cost an outrageous amounts of money.

But yeah, 4gb GDDR5 RAM, and consoles use 256MB GDDR3 RAM... I almost feel sorry for console gamers. :P

All the 5970 is, are two 5870's gpu's that are underclocked to 5850's speeds on one board. Which means that you can buy two 5850's for crossfire and get nearly the same performance for $400 less.

This is what a Sapphire 5970 looks like...........

If I had my way, I'd buy two of these babies plus that Alienware ultrawidescreen.....maybe two since the native res of one is 2880x900.
