http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/formats/xbox360/xbox-secrets-the-truth-about-xbox-360-relaunch--$1305320.htm

Halo reach is the first game that uses the X engine.

"One striking difference was the inclusion of one-gigabytes of RAM.the extra memory can be used to properly test your game.

extra memory from the 512MB pool would have to be put aside to test their game engine. Developers could of course disable these test features in order to use this spare memory, but that would mean that they wouldn't easily be able to test their game.

Therefore, a certain amount of memory would be sacrificed for their retail Xbox 360 game; this could amount to anything from 20MB's to as much as 100MB's. However, with the new Xbox 360 kit, this is no longer problem, giving that memory back to developers for the first time since the Xbox 360's launch in 2005."

the engine in general is a new way to program for the 360, it takes full advantage of the 360's features and give the 20-100mb of RAM back to the devs, thex eninge takes advantage of the 360 like the edge engine takes advantage of the ps3. Sony gave to thier devs and 3rd party. The edge is just now starting to show some serious power with Kz2 and UC2. and Killzone 2 (kz2 the best looking console gameimo runs on a modified EDGE engine.)

I don't think we'll be seeing next gen for a while :) just fine by me this gen is just incredible.

no memory was set out of the 512. in other words games weren't using the full 512 to begin with.

besides the OS games weren't using all that is possible. games with bigger game engines used less RAM because the xbox needs to test the engine. the x eninge doesn't need to. it gives the 20-100 MB needed to test the engine to be used in game itself.

The new dev kit uses 1GB now, it used to just be 512MB which is all the 360 actually has. I'm surprised anyone would have used up to 100MB to test, but anything helps.

why not? is it so unbelievable that a proprietary engine that is built from ground up for a system will use less RAM and take advantage of the system?

All I can think is that he's referring to the time frame.

I've been hearing rumors of this new engine for awhile, I hope it's completely true.

This is rather retarded, they are just now doing what they should have been doing from the beginning? The PS3 dev kit has had an extra 256MB from the beginning for this very reason.

I am pretty sure all the memory was being used in previous games it was just more difficult for the developers to test. It's not like this is an untapped resource, it's just easier for the devs.

Is this talking about the new dev consoles we've known about for ages. With the old they only had 512, so they had to run and test the game on that 512. The new ones have 1gb so you can use the 512, and use the other for testing.

The dev kits have the extra memory. They are taking notes from the PS3 dev kits. It allows them to be more efficient and give them more room to try different things.

I kinda dread seeing the boards after these dev kits start showing improved 360 graphics.

Oh well, we need something to keep SW alive.

i think halo reach will be the only graphical showcase for the 360 i means the ram is not gonna do much to the games anyways and since the 360's gpu can only go as far as it can i personally dont c games thats gonna be as good as kz2 and uncharted 2 and many other the games.

the best that sony has done ok fair enough it might have low ram and inferior GPU but the cell nakes up for it because u can squeese alot of power from the cell without using RSX. the RSX is only used as a backup there for we are seeing games like kz2 and uncharted 2 with the stronghold of the cell

xBOX 360'S cpu and GPU = Cell

do you have any idea how ignorant that post was? anything done on a computer, anything in the world, takes RAM. on a semi-related note, as anybody noticed that the lemmings now outnumber the cows, yet the cows are winning every argument, where previously the cows were outnumbered and the lemmings won every argument? things are a-changing...

most engines don't take advantage of the 360's or the PS3's true power. MS has never given out an engine built from gound up for the 360. Sony did (edge and the result are fantastic). Most games on the 360 use the UE3. UE3 doesn't take full advantage of any system. worse off games need o take off some memory from the 512 MB for the engine. The x engine will take full advantage of the hradware of the 360( tessolator, eDRAM, ect.) and give back the RAM used for the engines (anywhere from 20-100 MB). its more than just testing, the extra RAM can be used in game and features that usually would take more time to work with would be much easier to get to and showcase. I'm pretty intrested in it and want to see it in action.

Still 20 to 100MB RAM don't really effect the graphics (at least directly). I guess they could make the games slightly better looking than GeoW2 so the 360 games would look like Uncharted 2 (best console graphics atm imo). But I don't see the PS3 getting "better" visuals than Uncharted 2 neither.

Well, I guess the question is: "where are the 1st party devs who are supposed to use it?" As far as I know Microsoft shut them all down.

[QUOTE="uRan_Ehr"]I can't see how this new dev kit affects the game in any other way than making the testing of games easier for devs :?mayceV
most engines don't take advantage of the 360's or the PS3's true power. What? Fable 2, Halo 3/ODST, Halo Wars, Banjo Kazzoie, Ninja Gaiden 2 (not from MS, I know)? They are designed for 360, some even use a tesselator (Halo Wars) and ALL of them effectively use EDRAM (same for ~90% of multiplatforms).

well to give you credit I don't either but in honesty do we need it? I mean GOW3 kinda disgusts me (too much gore) games in general look great but people like to nitpic things. but another part of me says gears and kz2 is just the begining this gen is the transition to photorealism . ND and many devs still see loads of potential in both consoles. possibly with the new engine the boundrieswill be pushed much further than gears2. designers are always innovating and they can find a lot of power in those 20-100 MB of RAM.
