So this isn't really a next gen console from microsoft, same exact game boxes, will have the same exact games as xbox one, it's just an upgraded xbox one. Now why would they release this thing now when the PS5 will come out in a couple years? Will Microsoft have to release another console to compete with the PS5? I just don't get the strategy behind this move, because the PS4 will continue to outsell the xbox one. They should have just named it something different like Scorpio, it's the same mistake Nintendo made with the Wii U. People will be confused and say "Oh its the same as the Xbox one".

Who the hell is running things over there at Microsoft?

Because mid-gen re-release are a thing now.

Why did Sony release the PS4 Pro if they're going to release the PS5 in a couple of years?

@MonsieurX:

Sony pretty much had nothing to lose, they are way up this gen, so they will continue to sell the ps4 and thought what the heck, lets release an upgraded version for more money and see what happens.

Microsoft's move just doesn't make sense to me. They lost this gen, so why not just release a whole brand new console? Kind of like what they did with the 360 (my favorite console in the past 2 generations). Somebody over there is protecting their ass and refusing to admit that the Xbox one is a failure.

Why is it not a new generation? This console is multiple times more powerful than its replacement and 40-50% faster than its nearest competitor. When has a CPU or GPU been more than twice as powerful than its replacement and not been called a new generation?

Is it because it will share games with the other Xbox (but with greatly improved resolution and textures)? The Xbox will be backwards compatible from here on out, so those lines are forever blurred, just like PC games can be played on multiple generation GPUs.

Also, you assert than naming the doesn't convey that its a different machine, but you seem to have no qualms about Sony's Playstation 3 moving to a Playstation 4. I'm not understanding the premise of your argument.

Why is this so hard for some people? Were any of you confused by PS4 Pro?

Same Gen, better specs than any other of its gen as far as consoles are concerned.

What happens when PS5 comes out? People buy it or dont. What else is new?

Naming the Playstation in number successions lets people know it's the next version of the console. Like the iphone 5,6,7....

The naming of the console is plain dumb, xbox one x? Come on. So you're telling me microsoft's NEXT console after this will just continue to play all the old games and developers will have to make their next gen games xbox one compatible?

I'm an xbox fan (as well as an PS, Nintendo, PC) I just want to see them have an identity, not be just a PC. No offense to PC guys.

I agree it's a stupid move by Microsoft unless they're planning to discontinue their console division which I suspect that that's what they're doing.

Way up or not, Sony isnt in the clear as a corporation. I have owned ADRs of SNE for years. They are a train wreck, albeit they have straightened some rails out in the last 3 years. They want this gen to go as long as possible because they can turn profit on software and at this point hardware more than ever. My quarterlies illustrate this.

Seriously? They release their next gen system of course. And Sony will release another system later on, then Microsoft, then Sony, etc. Sony released their mid gen refresh last year so why is it when Microsoft releases theirs this year is it suddenly something that doesn't make sense?

Yea what do MS care? They'll just release an XB at the same time. Scorpio was a pro competitor.

Yea I agree completely. Its bloody stupid having a profitable arm that's making money. Every big business knows that's what you axe first. As MS continues to try and integrate its products on a W10 platform having games available to play on all formats would just be daft.

Maybe if selling the most meant as much to them as it does to fanboys. But the fact remains console sales were never the bread winner. Software is. But since consoles went online and charged a fee, then that subsidized everything. So much so, that even Sony and Nintendo are charging a fee. And it was a hilarious point from their most dedicated base for years that they never would. LMAO

One of the knocks on Xbox was dropping support of the OG Xbox after 4 years. Why would they invite that again? After Sony already rushed out a mid gen refresh so this concept isnt new?

@blue_hazy_basic: Xbox is profitable as a whole but is their console profitable though? Nobody knows because they refuse to release numbers but they've lost money because of Xbox in the past and Microsoft has a history of being allergic to the products that don't deliver. I could see Microsoft making a sort of transition to a more steam machine type of system.

My question is what exactly can a Ps5 provide that the 1x and pro can't. If they release in 2 years 4k will be the norm by then but plenty of people could already have the 1x and pro by then, so there would be no need for a new console that can do 4k when you already have 2 on the market that do 4k via checkerboarding or native. We argue here about res but the truth is normal gamers could care less about the trivial details we argue about, as long as it looks good on a 4k tv they're happy. If anything I could see a PS4 pro refresh, but then that would be 4 different versions of the PS4 this gen.

If Sony wants to play the power card they are going to have to wait and blindside MS again like they did in 2013. Releasing a new console too early would give Ms all the time they need to build a new console more powerful than the PS5.

It's not that the Xbox One X is backwards compatible with the other Xbox One games, it plays them natively. This isn't emulation, it's the console's exact same disc format. Nothing next gen about that.

Xbox One X is a mid-gen upgrade, exactly the same as the Pro, but better. Once a full-fledged console comes along from Sony, MS will probably have something similar in the works or ready to go. Simple.

You could have asked the same question last year when the PS4-Pro and XOneS released. Is 1 year such a big difference? They're just meeting market demand.

This is something new in the console business, there are still many unknowns and we don't know how it will affect the traditional scope of the standard console generation. Will it make it longer? Shorter?

If the PS5 releases before Xbox2, then we will just have a 360-PS3 scenario in reverse, I would assume. It's too early to tell now

Like when Apple stopped giving numbers to the full size iPad and started calling it just "the iPad"?

How confusing was it when MS started calling the Xbox the Xbox1? Was that confusing since it has a much lower "number" than Xbox360? People who are in the market are going to know whats up. And this is different than the WiiU, I think! because the Xbox target market is more educated about gaming than the Nintendo market as a whole. You have your opinion and I have mine about the naming. We'll see how much of an issue it is once its released.

Thats not a valid rationale. New Xbox games are compiled to the same target as previous games (X86_64). This will be this will be the same for the foreseeable future. You only use emulation when your hardware and/or software architecture changes. Its similar to the way that PC games will run whether the recommended video card was a Nvidia Fermi based GPU or a current gen Pascal card such as a gtx1080ti.

Maybe the Pro and the 1X is both companies testing us. Sure people upgrade to new phones every year but most people aren't paying for them 100% up front...they just add it to their current plans. I don't think people are willing to upgrade their consoles every few years.

Phil Spencer's answer to this was pretty brilliant if you ask me, and completely on point.

He was asked about the next Xbox and when that would be happening on GameSpot's show and he went on to say that there's not a timeline attached to it, that they're not going to just release a console because the clock has ticked this many times and it's now time to put out something else. 4K was a milestone in technology and they wanted to introduce something for that eco-system, enter the Xbox One X. The next milestone will be mixed reality for them and they're going to expand upon that next year and with this console they can do that. In terms of what is next, that has not presented itself yet, he said it's a lot of time, research, data collection, looking at trends to see where things are going or might land and what might be the next big thing.

They don't know yet, it's not apparent yet, and when it is we will see something else.

For PS5, Sony will probably want something that not only convincingly outperforms the Xbox One X, but also natively plays games in 4K which could not otherwise be played on previous gen systems, even at a lower resolution. And to do it all at $400. I just don't think the tech will be there in 2019 for that kind of next-gen leap - nor the need, frankly.

X seems like it will do just fine to bridge the gap when MS and Sony release their next gen systems. Also, down the road when tvs come out with hdmi 2.1, wont that help the X when its able to run game vrr mode? I would think it adds nice feature to give X longer legs to bridge i to next gen systems. Or is game vrr mode not a big deal?

Being X86 and GCN compatible doesn't equal trouble free BC. A faster machine may have data resource arriving too early and causing glitch/crash.

On PC, DirectX11 and 12 has resource tracking APIs for hardware scaling and software ecosystem was designed to resistant laptop style clock speed throttling and different hardware performance scaling.

On PS4, extra resource tracking checks are optional, hence why you have PS4 Pro's simple Boost Mode (clock speed increase without 18 CU expansion) can still cause glitch/crash on legacy PS4 games. http://www.psu.com/feature/32155/ps4-boost-mode-performance-games-list

1980s PC DOS games has BC issues on faster PCs hence why you have a turbo button.

I wouldn't mind a new console release every 2-3 years, its still 3-4 times cheaper than being a PC gamer.
