Commercials go both ways. Both Sony and Mircosoft have their own niches in advertising. Sony goes with comedy, and Microsoft goes with...well stuff like this
Yes, the PS3 ads before KB sucked. But Sony is generally well known for making great ads in and out of the PlayStation brand (despite some controversies).
In fact, most will agree that the "It only does Everything" is one of video game history's most succesful marketing campaigns, alongside "Genesis does what Nintendon't".
I don't pay attention to commercials all that much, probably has something to do with the fact that I ditched cable a while ago.
But, Sony has games, something that MS doesn't, or rather doesn't to the extent of quality and quantity that Sony does. MS's 3rd party plan this gen really put them behind on the competitive front. Their business strategy literally leaves me with no reason to pick up a 360.

I find kevin butler to be about as funny as an elementary school fire... sorry.
I will say that I happen to be more impressed by Microsofts ad campaigns in places like burger king etc. I always found that physical form of advertising more effective than tv ads.
OT: What infuriates me is platform-specific ads. Like when FF13 was coming out, there was a rather annoying amount of ads that only mentioned the game was for 360.
That's not a marketing advantage, that's just unfair. You wouldn't believe how many clueless people would have thought it was 360-exclusive.

Kevin Butler is pretty hit and miss with me, but mostly hits. The Gran Turismo ad is one of my favoritesl.
On a whole though, MS marketing pretty much destroys Sony's this gen. Look no further than the Halo live action trailers, or their very first Kinect trailer

This. I'm in the USA but the even I can say the UK marketting is absolutely terrible. I cringe when I watch the UK versions of playstation trailers and it has the logo at the end. I remember reading something where phill Harrison or whatever wad saying that SCEE and SCEJ have thought about making the "it only does everything" campaign worldwide.

That's why the PS3 outsold the 360 in total software in 09, and is currently outselling them so far in total software in 2010 right? :roll: Sorry, I didn't know. But the attach rate for 360 is higher............
