There seems to be some kind of conspiracy going on with Fifa 12.

I got the game yesterday and I've been playing it since then. Still I cannot get used to the tactical defending and I'm not sure if I ever will. Maybe if I do get used to it then I might appreciate it? I appreciate that EA took a risk, but it doesn't seem to be the best defending method like many reviewers have been saying. It's really awkward and it always favors the attacker. Most people who got Fifa 12 seem to be complaining about Tactical Defending, so why is this game getting the highest scores when it has arguably the worst addition to any Fifa game? I call conspiracy...especially since they didn't add much more than that to the game.

I didn't like it either, although I didn't try it hard. I just changed it to what it was in FIFA11.
.
And those scores are spot on, the game is hands down the best football game ever made.

Is the PC version the same as the console ones? If so, I might have to jump in the FIFA game again.

Nothing in the rules states we can't speak about IGN scores if we want to. The only time we have to go by GS scores is for the meta game and that's it.

I'm not bent on anything, I just asked you to put IGN next to the 9.5. Just to clarify with people who are unaware. But I guess even that's asking for too much

Try this for a conspiracy. Sports games usually remain pretty similar or change little so scores tend to stay the same or increase here with each iteration. Well one of the few exceptions (if not the only one) is MLB a PS3 exclusive. MLB09 got a 9 here and MLB10 allegedly did everything the same if not better and got an 8 the same for MLB11. So why the inconsistency? Fifa has remained pretty similar and they all got 9. Also you see in Metacritic MLB09, MLB10 and MLB11 basically have the same score. GS being biased against the PS3 yet again. How much do I win for this much elaborate conspiracy which is definitely true? ;)

Gamespot also rated Pokemon Black and White down for being more of the same despite changing a lot. Why aren't you complaining about that :? Oh that's right, it's not a PS3 Exclusive, so it doesn't matter.

If anyone is bias in that case it's Brett Todd (not that I think he is), not GS as a whole.

After playing it for a few hours:

  • The defending seems like it could be excellent with time. I've spent hundreds of hours with FIFA 11 so it will take some getting used to, but so far I have noticed I've improved a lot over a short period of time.
  • The pace of the game has slowed down for the most part as it has become more realistic. You have to jockey the attacker & hold structure. For example, say their CDM has the ball, I don't intend to take the ball from him unless the chance arises; I'll instead try to manipulate the way he'll play, trying to block off dangerous passes up the middle & make the player play it out wide. I try to force mistakes this way. The only time I'll really go in trying to make a tackle is once they get into my third of the field. Until then I just pressure them and force them to make harder passes if they want to make attacking plays.
  • I've only been playing human opponents. Perhaps it will be much harder against a computer-controlled opponent. However, I feel they're trying to make the game more realistic and the above playstyl3 is really how the game is played, instead of the FIFA 11 "hold sprint + A/O" torpedo defending.
  • The new ball control thing seems a bit strange. I've read that it's meant to be used in quick, short bursts to quickly turn or pull a ball in a direction for a shot or a pass. I've had some success with it, but I wonder if there is more to it.

I haven't played anything but the basic kick-off matches yet. Seems really packed with content though, I'm really looking forward to playing it over the year; FIFA games tend to take up most my gaming time simply because of how easy it is to jump into a match when I haven't got much time. I only got Gears 3 on Tuesday, but I finished the campaign so I'll be jumping in between the two for awhile.

Just because you don't know how to defend doesn't mean it's bad

But tbh, I also think it's a conspiracy because we will know for sure only after 6 months if it was the right move and it's impossible to put a score on the game till then. As of now I'm thoroughly enjoying it because I have to concentrate so hard. I'm guessing it will be like learning to drive lol. Hard at first but very easy after some practice.

I'm not a fan of this new defending method. Played some online games yesterday and got ridiculous scores. 6-4 / 8-2 / 5-6.
Precision dribbling has made scoring goals so much easier, while the TD has made defending next to impossible.

Hope I'll get used to it soon....

You can change the controls so that the defending is the same as it was in Fifa 11. EA tried to make the game more realistic and it worked. You can't just hold down circle and get the ball straight away this time around, you actually have to think what you're doing.

The controls are too clunky. When I'm defending I have to press different buttons which turns to a big defensive mess. I don't want to revert back to the Fifa 11 defending because you can't play like that in online ranked matches.

Played a few more matches and there's no more ping pong passing. The accuracy of through balls has been greatly reduced and finishing is much harder. The game deserves a 10 8)

Everyone knows fifa sucks. It's made for casual football gamers and tbh I doubt they have any experience with football at all. Fifa feels more like rugby than football. If you want a football game that feels like football go with pes.

What in the world are you talking about? Tactical defending is great. It forces you to think and work on your timing as opposed to FIFA 11 where all you had to do was hold A to get the ball back. Pardon EA for making their franchise feel more like the sport it's representing.

It's not a very hard concept to get, I think... Slide tackle fools when you need, tug em' when you're behind them, RB for a dude to cover them, and jockey them with LT so it's easier to get in front of them. I haven't played a Fifa game in years and when I played Fifa 12 it was extremely easy to grasp, I think a lot of what you're saying is fans overreacting to a change in something they love, even if it's for the better.

The tactical defending is great you have to get used to it . If it's causing you trouble go to the controller settings and return the defending to legacy defending .

You have to use tactical online though.

For people having difficulties with the new defence system; try swapping R1 and X in the control settings. Worked wonders for me !
