And DvDs have clear advantages over VHS.

Blu-Ray has better quality sound and audio, it is practically indestructible, more space, and goes great with HD, which many people are switching to.

I know you can get some Blu-Ray cheaper then at stores, but Blu-ray movies won't take off to the mass consumer for another 4-5 years IF that.

Yeah probably like 90% of the planet too because they have no means to. Yeah it sure seems like a lot of people have hdtv's especially when you are a hardcore gamer that hangs out in forums and stuff.[QUOTE="mstc_Q"][QUOTE="Adonymous"]DVD will never become standard...VHS FTMFW1xcalibur1

See, that's the problem: In order to really take advantage of blu-ray, you need a HDTV. The majority of people don't.
When DVD came out, it had clear advantages over VHS even on regular TVs.

Optional advantages. Like Subtitles, languages, commentaries, deleted scenes, scene skipping, no rewind, etc.
Blu-ray might look prettier, but I don't know if the general market cares that much. Bring some research in to prove me wrong, but I'm pretty sure DVDs became popular because of convenience, not in a large part due to the picture quality.

I was referring to the difference between VHS and DVDs you bum...
I don't know why the movie market is being used to dictate the standards, disks are used for a lot more than just watching films.
I haven't backed up my data in years; because it exceeded the capacity of multiple DVDs a long time ago, businesses also have storage needs.

See, I'm the opposite. Everyone I know wants one, but can't justify it just yet, especially with bluray costing 3x as much as a DVD.
The thing is, eventually HDTV will become standard, but will there be a better format by then?

So when it comes to WATCHING a movie, you're not sure if people care about how it looks?
The #1 thing people want when watching a movie is a good picture, not "subtitles, languages, commentaries, deleted scenes, scene skipping, no rewind, etc."
I am really having trouble seeing how you can downplay picture quality when it comes to movie watching.

If consumers want quality, why do they buy digital cameras? Film still has a major advantage in this department.
From what I've observed, consumers seem to generally be more concerned with convenience than quality.

No, there won't be a better format. Nobody will launch a 'better format' when there aren't any tv's to support this 'better format'. The hdtv's out right now really can't support a better picture quality that what you'll find on a blu-ray disc. Thus there's not going to be a better format until the next level of hdtv's is released, which will probably be a long time from now, plenty long enough for blu-ray to be come the norm just like dvd is now.

plz to look up advantages b4 talkng kthx
Funny how people are arguing the HDTV install base is small, when it comes to consoles and gaming people usually argue the opposite to try and combat PC having an image quality advantage.
So which is it? Is there a significant install base; reducing the game image quality difference argument but supporting Blu-ray at the same time. Or is there not a significant HDTV install base to support Blu-ray; a claim which also brings to question the number of console gamers with access to "HD" resolutions?
I'm not being serious about this but it seems arguing either point poses a problem, unless you want to think the HDTV install base is highest among console gamers; in which case I think a poll will be of interest.

Well lets put it this way. I'm no movie buff, and I could care less if there is more detail in the grass, or texture of an actors skin. I not paying $10-$15 dollars extra for that.

Agree. If the movie in question is Lord of the rings, the HD is cool. But do we really need HD versions of No country for old men or There will be blood. For special effects flicks, yeah, but to count the pores on an actors face?Blu ray has already been adapted faster then DVD has. HDTVs are the most wanted items and they are getting lower and lower in price. The average joe can now afford an HDTV and will upgrade, because SDTVs are being phased out. Heck I went to my families local Walmart and the Electronics area looked like something you would see in Best Buy with the entire wall full of HDTVs.
As people adopt HDTVs they will pick up a Blu ray player which will get cheaper just like the DVD player and so will the disks. Peopl forgot how DVD became standard it wasnt mainly the public pushing it as much as the movie studios. First you had DVD advertised behind VHS, then it was in front, then DVD got the special edition with exclusive extra content, then certain TV seires' and movies were exclusivly on DVD and then VHS was dumped. Who do you think backs Blu ray, the same movie studios that back DVD and they are backing it to replace it so they can resell all their old hits for more money.
TVs are moving to HD, Cable is moving to HD, Radio is moving to HD, Gaming is moving to HD, why wouldnt Movies????
P.S. And for god sake to say Digital Distribution because thats such a long shot pipe dream its not gonna be a reality for at least 20 years IF people wanna ditch a hardcopy which most dont.

True and you wont have to because us early adapters are doing that for you so when you finally decide to upgrade you will pay reasonable prices for them and wont have to shop around. I did the same for DVDs that were 10-15 dollars more then VHS. I bought them and they got cheaper and cheaper and the players got cheaper and cheaper and next thing you know my mother had one.

No, film does not have a major advantage. A decent digital camera takes a picture that only an expert could tell the difference. Hardly a 'major advantage'.

Blu-ray will be standard but not for a very long time. People can't afford blu-rays or HDTVs in masses.JLF1
You assume they will be the same price forever. Remember last year Blu ray players were 1000 dollars, now they are 399 some are 250. They are only gonna get cheaper and the same goes for Blu ray disks. The same exact thing happened with DVD. HDTVs will get cheaper, blu rays will get cheaper and more people will pick it up.
