We know that this console gen will end when Wii U comes out next year. Doesn't that mean that if the PS3 doesn't surpass the Wii or 360 in the next year it would have lost this gen?

The next gen already started with the 3DS actually.

The Wii U is just as powerful as the 360 and PS3 so why would it end this generation? That doesnt make sense. When the new xbox cmes itwill be the start of a new generation

Please don't start that kind of argument. It makes perfect sense.

Pretty much. AFAIK, gens are decided by total sales (though I could be mistaken). PS3 has done well, but technically, i'm sure it's a loss compared to 360 (though they're pretty damn equal in the market).

If hardware power determined the start of a new gen then what we consider current gen would be incorrect and only high end PC builds would be considered current.

WiiU is a next gen console. That is how it will go down. And I'm sure it will be a bit more powerful than the 360/PS3. Plus the controller will open up new gameplay possibilities.

When the Wii U is released, the new Xbox/PS system would have been announced. So yeah, the gen ends when the Wii U is released.

How could the PS3 "lose" to the 360 because the Wii U is out? :?

Generations have far more to do with timing than power. Case in point, the early fifth gen systems like the Jaguar were not, in practice, much better than four gen systems like SNES and Genesis.

A gen ends when the last remaining console gets discontinued, not when a new gen starts.

Uh, the PS2 is still going so how does that work out?

That's what I was about to say until reading comprehension kicked in.

The PS2 hasn't been discontinued yet. Also the Atari 2600 wasn't discontinued until 1992.

Interesting way of looking at it and I tend to agree. Would we still be in last gen since you can still go to the store and buy a PS2 though?

It doenst stop the new gen from starting, just means the old gen is still going.

No. A gen ends when a new console is made, which starts a new gen.

Im not trying to argue im just saying that it doesnt make sense for a console to come out that has the same limitations as the past consoles to start a new generation. When a generation starts the games have to be upgraded to things we never seen before and the Wii U doesnt cut that

Not in System Wars. As soon as the new console releases (in this gen's case, the 360), the new gen starts.

A new generation doesn't necessarily mean better (especially in System Wars), it just means it's a new generation, i.e. the new iteration.
