This is a terrible gen for JRPGs -- when will we see AAA?

It's been pretty pathetic so far. No I'm not some jerk who just goes by scores -- JRPGs are seriously lacking this gen IMO. The best we got so far was Eternal Sonata which came out some time ago. Sure you could argue that you really enjoyed LO, but it's really a game that belonged in last gen if you ask me (or even earlier).

On most websites (including gamespot), there is yet to be a AAA JRPG on a console this generation. Even AA scores extremely rare.

What will be the first redefining AAA JRPG of this generation?

I would vote FFXIII from looking at the track record of main installments for the FF franchise -- but that won't be out for a while, which makes this gen all the more sad.

Perhaps we'll be suprised?

If anything can Final Fantasy. Very little hope for TLR. Star Ocean has never goten AAA. Level 5 has some AAA under their belt though, maybe White Knight will come through

Most good jrpgs seem to be heading to the handhelds.  In the past few years the ds, and to a lesser extent the psp, have recieved quite a few awesome jrpgs.. including the amazing and unique "the world ends with you".

as far as console jrpgs, tales of vesperia and symphonia 2 just came out. i'm not sure about symphonia 2, but vesperia is quite good.. unless i'm mistaken, valkyrie chronicles is also a jrpg.  The wii is also getting a handful of promising looking jrpgs including the next main Tales game, Fragile, and a few others.
This gen consoles certainly aren't getting loads of jrpgs, perhaps the high development costs have a part in that, among other things.

What people here dont realize is how high standards have risen for RPGs in general. When you have games like Fallout3 and Oblivion with so much depth, the traditional RPG just doesn't cut it anymore.

Believe or not, but this gens RPGs are better than last gen. Just not as overrated.

Honestly, the "AAA" label nonsense is of no worth to me. I liked Lost Odyssey a lot more than FFXII. I liked Persona 3 a lot more than FFXII. I'll gladly take my A's and AA's over the overrated AAA's.

According to most hermits Fallout3 and Oblivion don't hold a candle to their predessosors, so how can that be? IMO WRPG trade a strong main quest accompanied buy robust sidequests for "freedom"(which is limited any way you slice it) and almost nothing but sidequests, which is lame IMO

Persona 3 and Odin Sphere were fantastic JRPG's. AAA games are generally overrated from my point of view. I hardly ever like the games that receive the score and gravitate more towards games between the 7.0 and 8.5 region.

Fact is, WRPG's have progressed more than JRPG's, and now Japanese devs are playing catchup and trying harder to "westernize" their games.

it's also not fair to suggest that jrpgs don't have alot of depth in comparison.  They may not have alot of customisability in terms of your characters appearance, or clas. but there is often a slew of abilities or characters in a complex story on top of a rather difficult game.. games like etrian odyssey are brutal, while FF4 will have you on your toes through even the most basic of battles.

Then there are some totally out there jrpgs like TWEWY which has tons of depth in its pin system, clothing/apparel stle system, and use of both screens/characters.  IT really is a totally different kind of game and deserves more recognition.

The problem is that alot of WRPGs are using high production values and streamlining themselves very well so to appeal to a wider audience.. while alot of the console jrpgs so far are just more of the same.

They are only westernizing their games for the sales. Majority of sales don't come from Japan, period, so they are caught in a bind trying to please both worlds and they are producing crap. If they stick to what they do they will make great games

It is funny and sad because it is true. At least Odin Sphere was able to bring together the tactical RPG genre with the action RPG genre quite seamlessly.

So how'd you work that one out. With Fallout 1&2 and Morrowind being vastly better than Oblivion and Fallout 3 and having infinitey times more depth in them than both games.

As far as JRPGs go they have indeed gotten worse than there last gen counterparts. All the next gen JRPGs suck compared to the old ones. It's nothing to do with them ageing, they've just lost teh quality.

Both JRPG and WRPG have gotten worse infact. KOTOR was a million times better than Mass Effect, Fallout1&2 totally rip F3 to shreds, Oblivion a more dumbed down version of morrowind. Infact I don't think anyone on this entire forum can name a current gen RPG that has succeeded a last gen one.

Even if their PC predecessors are more acclaimed. The difference is, these WRPGs are now more present on consoles.

IMO Lost Odyssey and Inifinite Undiscovery are much better than the JRPGs released within PS2's first year. (except FFX)

I think FFXIII will be the first.  I'm really looking forward to this title.

That is followed closely by Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

But, like others have said AAA and AA or whatever mean nothing to me.  Lost Odyssey is an amazing game, Rogue Galaxy and Odin Sphere are great and I would really like to start Persona 3.

They are more present on consoles means they are better? They are present on consoles because there is money to be made there. And LO is great, but it doesnt really compare to the JRPGs on the PS2 for their time. And why only compare to the PS2s first year? LO came out in the 360's 3rd year

This goes back to my originial statement. Where WRPGs on consoles, which have relatively more depth than the average JRPG have risen standards for reviews this gen.

Games like Dark cloud and Okage during PS2's early years wouldn't of gotten the scores they had. Quite frankly, a lot of PS2 games were overrated, and I think its unfair to compare gen to gen review scores without considering the difference in standards

nah. There's also Mask of Betrayer. That's all though (there are some magnificent cRPGs this gen like King;s Bounty and Space Rangers2, but they're bizzare hybrids, they aren't Fallout-like :) )

So why where Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia recieved so well? Standards rise, but its not because of WRPGs. There just hasnt been anything as captivating as some of the JRPGs were last gen. And quite frankly, a lot of WRPGs re overrated this gen :?

I could give a rats arse about the ratings, though I agree this generation has been terrible for JRPG's. The only traditional RPG that I felt was truly worth buying was Tales of Vesperia. If you toss in Strat RPG's, Valkyria Chronicles makes the list as well.

Dude what are you talking about, we've had some good titles this gen. Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria are all quality titles. They werent AAA but its not to say that this gen was terrible.

Upcoming titles like Star OCean 4 and FFXIII? JRPG lovers should be jaw dropping right now.

LIES LIES LIES!

I only recently played Chrono Trigger and it is unbelievably exceptional. Get past the graphics and you'll see exactly how to expertly pace a game, craft characters with some depth and persona, create a game world that spans time, see your actions affect the game world and the music is possibly Uematsu's raison d'etre. There is more charm and personality in one theme tune of Chrono Trigger than most games possess in whole.

And it has Sir Glenn Frog, master of the Masamune, avenger of Sir Cyrus, feal to the Kingdom of Guardia and the heirs of the crown. Glenn FTW!.

What is peoples obession with AAA games. It seems that they are the only games that matter.

There are great JRPGs this generation, such as Tales of Vesperia, Disgaea 3, and Lost Odyssey. JRPGS don't really get 9 or above. If you only play AAA games JRPGs aren't the best type of game to play.

From all the stuff i keep hearing it could be Valkyrie Chronicles because unlike the other JRPGs i liked this gen

Eternal SOnota, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, and yes even Infinite Undiscovery.....

IT acutally brings something to its genre....and with Disgea 3 and Fire Emblem Radiant of Dawn under delivering as Strategy RPGs i could see Valkyrie CHronicles do 8.5 or 9.0

Besides those guys made SKies of Arcadia....which makes them AWESOME :D

Valkyria Chronicles might get AAA but it's really a SRPG. I'm thinking WKC will be the first AAA JRPG. If not that, FF13.

There could be an AAA JRPG staring us in the face right now (Valkyria Chronicles). Of course it's not guaranteed.
