Super Mario

.....Nope, not you galaxy.

Im talking about this bad boy

Most probably hate the main game but forget that for a second. Remember those bonus levels from Sunshine? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6CteMJiVbM

It's still hasnt been surpassed from a platformer perspective. Theres two reasons why its ahead of the curve.

1) Its pure platforming, no story, no theme and your path is clear. All you have to do is progress from one platform to the next.

2) Sunshine has the best controls of any 3D game to date. The responsiveness is unreal and Marios movement are so agile and free. Its the only 3D game ive played where ive felt 100% in control of the character. From what i remember hearing, Miyamoto and the team spent months just getting the controls up to this level. Other devs have said theyve tried to but just cannot match it. If anyone can find the links, greatly appreciated. Im suprised action games havent tried to mimick this precision.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djkmmeHtoTM Start at 0:35. Its not the best example and the best way to understand this is to have a controller in your hand.

One of the reasons i didnt like Galaxy was that the controls felt sluggish in comparison (although still ahead of the curve). But its understandable what with gravity and spherical worlds.

It'd be nice if Nintendo made the next console mario game based on those sunshine bonus stages. So no theme (water pack, gravity) and just mario and crazy level design.

I was going to say Sonic, but that's because I played it earlier. Need to try more Mario though.

Galaxy is awesome but I think it is slightly overrated and sunshine is slightly underrated. 64 is still my favorite no doubt.

64 is still the best in terms of 3D platforming although I do agree that Sunshine is underrated

Yay, another Sunshine thread...

Sunshine has to be one of the most dissapointing games I have ever played. It had a horrible camera, a boring theme, an annoying fetch quest, terrible voice acting, and overall just wasn't fun at all. I didn't like a thing about it.

To me, the 3D platformer king is Super Mario Galaxy 2, and the 2D platformer king is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Both of those just nail everything I'm looking for in video games: Perfect gameplay and tight controls, catchy music, pleasing visuals, extremely high replay value, and neither are or will be affected by the passing of time.

How has there not been a Wii remake of Sunshine yet? Use the Wii remote for FLUDD, Galaxy controls. It'd be great! I might buy a Wii to play that.

Raymundo_Manuel

Rayman 2 is the best platformer (in a broad sense)

EDIT: Interesting, never knew SMS held a 91% on GR http://www.gamerankings.com/gamecube/533287-super-mario-sunshine/index.html Always thought it was reviewed around 7-8

WRONG

I don't care what you think, I don't care what you say, Super Meat Boy is the only valid answer. Anything else is absolutely incorrect.

Oh Hells Yeah!

Mario Sunshine is still one of my favorite games, I loved those "void" levels!

The game was way underrated IMO

Edit: I still have yet to finish SMG and get SMG2 though

Ah good memories with SMS. Hell it was my first Gamecube game. Huh, I wish I still had my Gamecube. Don't say the Wii can play GC games, nothing beats playing them on their original platform.

As much fun as I had with those extra levels (the best part of the worldwide critically loved AAA highly rated Sunshine), I still say pinnacle of platforming is 2D with Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World. I live, breathe platformers though...but that's just me.

Those secrets were my favorite part of Super Mario Sunshine. Mario Galaxy felt a lot like it, but I felt Mario was more agile in Sunshine. Overall however I would place galaxy above it simply because there was a lot more of it.

Sunshine is however an underrated game but still my least of the 3D Mario Platformers SMG2>SM64>SMG>SMS

Super Mario Sunshine is just Mario with a squirt gun and a bad camera.
