A game is based on artistic merit not on technical merit. I am baffled when I hear that a game has technical merit that doesn't match its artistic merit. Games like resistance or dragon age, etc may be more technically advanced but aren't as pretty as games like Donkey Kong Country returns. When I saw the SOTC HD video, I was honestly blown away. To believe that a game can look this good and be on a console like ps2 and still manage to look better than 80% of games on next generation consoles is unbelievable achievement. If only the game didn't have pop-in (fix this please).

What are you smoking? That looks nowhere near as good as "80% of games this generation".

When talking about just "graphics" though, it's an all inclusive entity, a marriage of the two.

i mostly agree with you. okami is my fav looking game ever....i think it looks better than anything this gen. but the tech is like a toolbox. more tech, more horsepower are basically better tools that allow devs to do more. crysis, for example, is also a cracking looking game in terms of end result. it is so because it used the latest tech very well. it wasnt just a case of "oh lets do this and that because we can". it was sensible..in its own crazy way. have you seen the latest cryengine 3 demo? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgrrrzJS89s thats another example of technology put to good use to produce a stunning end result. so yes...the most important thing is the end result..how does the game actually look redardless of tech used? there are games out that use the latest and greatest tech and look poor (or at least worse than older games) because of poor artistic direction. but the advancement of tech and the tech side provides new opportunities for the artists to show off.

100% agreed. A game could be the best technical game out there, and I'd still say it looks crap if the artstyIe is bad.

Depends on what you're actually talking about. Everyone is going to have a different opinion about stylized(artstyle) graphics, but informed people will always bring up the same 5 games while discussing what are technically the best.

i disagree. one of the reason i stopped playing this on the PS2 was the the framerate was so bad. now with the aid of better tech that great artsic vision can better realized

I will never understand the SotC love affair. All you do is ride all over the dang place raising you sword in the air to find some creature to jump around on and stab a few times or something similar. I got up to the 5th or 6th creature and stopped playing.

I agree that art direction is more important than the technical aspects of the visuals. You can have the best graphics in the world, but if it just dull brown and gray areas no one is going to care.

Art direction is the basis for the technical aspects to become reality. Without the precise lighting and technical clarity of good graphics the Art gets lost. Dead space 2 has some of the best art direction and environments but its only when you add the technical aspect of the lighting then it really pops and comes to life. They are one in the same really. Get a team who is good at both and you have gold

The standards for godly must have dropped significantly :/ That wasn't impressive by any means compared to many games today

I'm am one who believes that great art design is more important than technical graphics. I'd rather look at Morrowind, Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, SotC, Wind Waker, Okami, FFX, RE4, Borderlands,Tales of Vesperia, Guild Wars, and many others over games like Crysis and Battlefield 3 any day (still super excited for BF3 though!).

The best if a mixture of both however... the Witcher 2 & RAGE come to mind.

From my experiences listening to gamers,we are all to some degree "Graphics whores". We can say how much it doesn't matter and still enjoy games with horrible graphics. But when it boils down we are all waiting to see games and love seeing games that look really close to real life. Once Crysis 2 stuff started to show up the graphics deviants withing in us all came out and all of a sudden we all talked about the graphics. The same with BF3. The game only showed a few videos and it has generated unbelievable hype because of how it looks. Because it looks really close to real life. I agree that I can still enjoy a game that has bad graphics but fantastic art style. But I am not going to hide that I love very good graphics.

Don't know why you pick Resistance and Dragon Age, Killzone and Gears are RIGHT THERE.

I don't know how things work in other countries, but in America, my opinion is fact and your facts are opinions. And I have an easier time proving my opinions with technical merit than I do with proving artistic facts.

Gibberish? My opinion is NO. Fact.

Art direction prevents a game form aging terribly. Technical graphics win in the short term however. That footage looks so much cleaner than how the game used to look. Played it not that long ago on my PS2 and while it's very outdated in many ways it's still a wonderful looking game in it's own right.

Wow that horse runs weird :?.......but i agree on art style being very important. However, techincal graphics are still impressive initially. You picked the wrong game though, as Wind Waker is a game that will look truely TIMELESS forever. Nothing will top that.

I agree that graphics is a huge necessity with the immersion of video games. DEFCON on the PC could not have been graphically any other way and perfectly conveysthe theme of the game.Gotta make this system wars so...

Example: I would never say DEFCON straight up looks better than GEoW, it was just done better.
