First of all it has nothing to do with all that extra crap that Microsoft and Sony's console can do........I personally never use my console for anything but gaming, i have never watched a movie or streamed anything through my game consoles, i play games and only games on my consoles, and i still wouldn't own a Wii-U.

The Wii-U hardware is a generation behind, if that isn't bad enough, that tablet game pad of theirs only lasts about 3 hours on a full charge, the pro controller they introduced, not only doesn't work with most games, but the Wii-U tablet controller must be powered on to use the pro controller.

Most people don't even know about the Wii U's existance thanks to Nintendo's terrible marketing, even at the 2011 E3 everyone didn't know what to make of their press conference, most thought it was a new tablet controller add on for the Wii, because they never talked about the console itself.

Once again Nintendo's online strategy falls waaayyyyy short of the competition's and it's nowhere near as easy to join games, chat with friends and just play online in a community....it's too complicated.

Put all that together with the lack of 3rd party support of the Wii-U's first year, and that is why it's failing and why it will lose to PS4 and Xbox One, because Nintendo is stubborn and cheap, they made billions from the original Wii and DS hardware, and could've easily put together a console that would have rivaled PS4 and Xbox One, but no they had to try and innovate yet another control scheme, and now it's back firing all over them, they refuse to follow any trend in the gaming market place, they just want to always do their own thing.

Well now it's costing them millions in sales, and no amount of 1st party games is going to save the Wii-U against the PS4 and Xbox One.

Good points, but I still disagree. The Wii U will ultimately be the best selling console of this generation. There is not argument about MS and Sony putting out more robust hardware, and having more of the online market, but it didn't matter last time around, and I don't think it will this time.

I have a topic "the winner of this generation" that explains further.

Don't think i agree with the Wii-U winning this generation by any means but i do think it won't be discontinued, like haters are saying.

Yeah well, actually i did ask my local game store guy if the new super mario bros 3d world helped Wii-U sales, and he said although the game itself sold alot of copies, it didn't help sell any Wii-U consoles, so take from that what you will.

Yup it's just wishful thinking on Nintendo fanboys part that Wii-U will survive at all this gen, if there lucky they'll see a slight profit margin before this gen's over, and i'm sure that will come from DS and 3DS sales, not Wii-U sales.

The Wii U is dead. The sooner people accept that the better. It's dead in Japan and it's dead in Europe. America is the only place where it can still shine a little. You have to pretty delusional to think it can win this generation.

The hardware matters a little bit but in the end it is what they do with the hardware that makes it. Nintendo usually does a good job of creating games that take advantage of the hardware while still being fantastic, and a lot of the time you can't find those games elsewhere.

Tablet may have a short battery life, but are you gaming for more than three hours of a time that often? And if you are, you can't take the tablet outside of your home, meaning you should be able to find an outlet somewhere to plug in that long cord and keep gaming. I am really a fan of the tablet myself, especially off-screen play.

Nintendo has done a pretty crappy job marketing their new console. Hopefully they'll do a better job as new games release, but as it stands right now they still have to do some work in this area.

Nintendo's online is lacking, but one really awesome thing that they have is the Miiverse. It's neat how it builds such a community, and when it is integrated with a game like Wind Waker HD it truly shines. Social media integration like the other consoles are doing is great, but it doesn't give the sense of a closed community like the Miiverse has, and that's something that I believe is commendable.

Nintendo is very much struggling but they are in no way out of the race. We see the media changing tunes, once negatively criticizing to now praising it this holiday season. Games, great games, are now releasing for the console, games that you can't find anywhere else. Whether you are a fan of Nintendo's games is another story, but reviews are saying a lot of what's releasing is solid.

All you did was repeat what everyone's been saying for the past year, all of your points are common knowledge.

But despite all of that, I still enjoy the wii u for what it is.

It's not just the WiiU, any Japan-centric console is doomed.

Do you know why the 3DS is so relatively crude (compared to the Vita, or Nvidia's Shield)? It's to make life easier for Japanese developers. In the last generation you might have noticed Japanese games all but disappeared on the PS3 and Xbox 360 because Japanese studios couldn't handle the budgets of HD games. Almost all Japanese development moved to the DS because it was cheaper.

This is the big reason the wiiU is so weak relative to other consoles. The PS4 annd Xbox One are basically off-the-shelf PCs. Nintendo could have built something similar if they really wanted to (think of all the hardware engineering that went into the WiiU controller). But that would be too powerful for the Japanese developers they're catering to.

Notice all the "throwback" games for the WiiU? Again, because it's cheaper.

The WiiU really isn't in the same class as the PS4 or Xbox One at all. It's a lot closer to the Ouya, something that allows you to play handheld games on a TV.

A bit harsh, but for the most part true, Wii-U owners have to hope 1st party sales boost Wii-U sales or Nintendo may very well discontinue the Wii-U by the end of 2014.

Simply put the three main reasons it's failing are as follows;

1) it's not as powerful as the one or ps4. This means a lot less games, period.

2) Only one tablet controler per consol. They should of let you use two per system (with the option to use 4 pro controls, wii motes, etc)

3) realllly bad marketing

I'm kind of sick of people throwing that term around like it's inherently bad. For instance people bitched about games like Mass Effect 3 or Dead Space 3 having microtransactions. What it amounted to there was people paying for the same advantages that can be earned in game without the need to buy things, for instance in Dead Space 3 you just had to use your salvage bots, and in Mass Effect 3 you simply had to play the MP to earn the same bonuses that one could pay for. Lots of microtransaction systems are simply shortcuts for impatient gamers. Hell, in Battlefield 3 people were bitching that someone could buy certain weapons and that gives them an advantage, and as someone who never bought those I call bullshit, better players are simply better by playing more and bringing some inherent skill into things, but it mostly comes to playing for hours on hours to earn experience to unlock weapons, learn the maps, train with friends on map strategies, these things make a much bigger difference than people wasting money on microtransactions; and I don't feel the least bit cheated by not participating.

And then what? Their next console would just face the same problem. The Wii U is just a continuation of the SNES>N64>GC sales trend. It seems that the Wii made a lot of people forget this. The only way Nintendo can have a high selling console nowadays is to offer something people want outside of their games. Like the Wii. They thought the tablet controller would be that and they were wrong. I'm interested in seeing their next gimmick.

Not all microtransactions are just shortcuts though ... Devs and publishers cutting stuff out of full priced games to sell to you again on launch day even are despicable business practices and need to stop.

I didn't say anything about being against buying shortcuts.

that's more a problem of retailer exclusive content, I think LA Noire was the perfect example of how bad that was, like GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy, and whoever, they all had their own exclusive pre-order content, that was the worst of it

personally, I'm more against those stupid season passes, people are committing to buying stuff before it's even done and who knows if it'll even be worth it

what you seem to refer to is straight up DLC, microtransaction are just tiny little amounts to unlock costumes or special weapon skins and crap like that; and I don't really feel that effects my enjoyment of playing the game

Yes, of course people are to blame for this: because they are showing the publishers there is indeed a market for practices like this so they won't stop doing this.

And retailers are to blame as well: they demand exclusive content and developers cutting up their game. I'm realistic in the sense that no developer wants to release its game with content missing so they can sell it to you later on. But it's the publishers and retailers that keep forcing them. It's pretty damn awful and makes me purchase less and less game on the day they release, but instead wait for the inevitable complete edition.

At the start of last gen we had horse armor DLC, which was content that was way overpriced. But now, at the start of this gen we have content that's way overpriced, while also being made during the development of the game and should've been included when people pay 60 dollars to get the full experience.

@Aparthide: The post didn't translate.

Anyways, my post was supposed to say that Nintendo is stuck with Wii U, whether it's dead or not. Abandoning the console at mid point is THE worst thing that Nintendo could do. As ReviewtechUSA would point out, just look at Sega if you want to see what happens if you abandon a concept halfway through (technically, it was an attachment, but the audience thought it was a next gen console).

Come hell or high water, Nintendo will have to ride out the Wii U for the rest of the gen and correct it next gen.

@AtariKidX: Then get a PC, you get all the next gen games you want, your choice of controllers, and full backward compatibility with your favorite titles. Oh, and you could connect it to your TV, it essentially acts like one big monitor.

The best part of it all? It's all yours for only 800 bucks, and I'm pretty sure you have better use of a desktop than just gaming.

I don't think people get the console that's why they aren't buying it including me. It doesn't always seem to be what features it has I mean Sony seem to be the ones who have the right idea at the moment. That's why they have got alot of 3rd Party Support for the PS4.

You need the Gamepad to actually get into the Console itself.

WiiU requires you to Log In everytime you turn it on. After that you can use pretty much any control scheme you want to select your games.

The Gamepad is part of the System itself. If the Gamepad is broken you can say your Console is Broken.
