All this tosh I've been hearing about '$3000' PCs to play crysis is a load of tosh.

I'm assuming anybody reading this is on a pc so you probably have some of the stuff you need right there. The main parts of your PC that affect performance are (Assuming a PC is like a Human):

CPU (The IQ, How fast it can work things out)

GPU (The eyesiight combined with parts of the brain, allows for more detailed pictures.)

RAM (How many things it can have in it's fast-access memory at the same time)

CPU: All you'll need for crysis is a decent core 2 duo processor. A core2 @ 2.4GHZ is enough. ($300 Max)

GPU: The 8800 series were what crysis was built on. The 8800GTX comes reccomended for amazing performance:price ratio. ($550) However you probably won't even need this much. Any 8800 will do the job and if $550 is too steep, there is always the GTS which isn't too shabby. ($385)

RAM: RAM is so cheap these days. 2GB will be plenty. ($65ish)

Cooling: If you have high end equipment, you'll wanna keep it nice and cool. This heatsinker is very good and low cost. A very decent one will set you back no more than $70.

Bear in mind I've rounded up that comes to $985 if you go for GTX and $820 with a GTS.

So the question: Where is the $3000 figure everybody keeps chucking around come from?

That is how much you will need for a top of the line alienware. PCs are not expensive at all, but still more expensive than consoles. You could never find a PC that is as powerful as the Xbox for 280.

Alienware?!?! BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA. They charge you roughly double what the parts actually cost. ALso if you look at the 360's hardware, it's probably about the same as a mid-ranged pc. Not very impressive but it's the optimization of the hardware that makes it easier to pull off good effects. I.E. The 360 doesn't need 256MB of RAm just to boot-up.

8800 series? Sure, its great, but I think 8600gts (which I've seen for 150 on sale, new) will do just fine.

Also, about upgrading or even building your own PC, its not as hard as some may thing. It just requires some research.

You asked where the number came from, and I told you. Keep trying to find a PC for 280 dollars can that play Bioshock with Xbox 360 level graphics though. To help you out, you don't have to include the hard drive and wireless adapter (even though we all know it's impossible to actually use it).

It would be impossible to make a PC as cheap as a 360 that could play games at the same level because of the exact same reason I just told you. Read it again.

I like my PC. It cost $500 and i can play Crysis in med settings with x2 AA. Also the only one saying a good gameing PC will cost $3000 is smokeydabear, and that was sarcasm.

Currently, I own a Mac.  Yeah, I know, Macs don't play games.  Or so I thought.

currently, I'm playing Kotor, which defitely blows out, the graphics on the Xbox.  Well, then again, anything would at this point.

The thing that really makes this work is an ATI Radeon 9600 card.  It's beautiful.

I was so anti computer gaming before this.  Not anymore.

I recently picked out the parts for a completely brand new PC, and it came out to about $1,300:

ENERMAX PC case: $120

Asus nForce 650i SLI motherboard: $120

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB: $295

550W power supply: $60

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600: $280

2GB Crucial Ballistix RAM: $110

Samsung SpinPoint 500GB HDD: $110

Samsung DVD+R Burner: $30

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platium Fatal1ty Sound Card: $180

Total: $1,305.91

I'm pretty sure this qualifies as a high-end PC, too.

The internet makes that argument invalid. Ignorance is no longer an excuse. If you don't know, google it. If you are unsure, go to your local computer store.

Are you planning on getting another GTS? Otherwise, why the 680i MOBO? It's a nice rig though. The Q6600 can be OCed to the same as a QX6850 ;)

How would it run like crap? X1950pro is a good midrange card, Amd X2 4200+ is a good dual core. 1 gig of ram is the norm. MoBo isn't as important as some people think it is unless you like to overclock. If you say this will run like crap, then what is that saying about the 360?

Eh, you still need a motherboard $100-200 - CD/DVD Drive $50? Hard drive for space $100, the case $50-100 and maybe something else i missed, like windows, etc. You're gonna end up spending up to at least $1500 whether you like it or not.

Who does not have a soundcard and kbam already please raise your hand (looks around see nobody) ??

Everyone whose soundcards actually create audible sounds and whose gpu's produce visual images please raise their hand.

You need speakers and monitors people! You can't play processing!

Eh, you still need a motherboard $100-200 - CD/DVD Drive $50? Hard drive for space $100, the case $50-100 and maybe something else i missed, like windows, etc. You're gonna end up spending up to at least $1500 whether you like it or not.BrownWalrus

No. $1,000, tops.

Who said it was from scratch? Most people own a desktop which they can easily upgrade for not a huge amount of money. This is for them not for the poor lemmings who can afford a 360 and a laptop but not a desktop. :( I feel their pain:|

[QUOTE="whoisryanmack"]I still don't see how that's less than a console...so you haven't really accomplished anything. Oh, and you'll be needing video, sound, a keyboard, and a mouse..groudyogre

130 pounds is 65 dollars? Ya...maybe you should check out some exchange rates.

Whats the difference if they're not thousands of dollars? Money is money. Add a couple hundred bucks on top of the argued price, and it will be higher, I gaurantee it.

Psst, I think you have the exchange rate backwards. £130 is about $300 here. :D

And besides, console owners have to buy a TV, anyway.

How much are PC games compared to console games? How many games do you buy in a year?

If you buy even just ten games a year, less than one game a month, you're saving $500 over the course of a five year period.

Video == GPU

Your PC already has a sound card.

It also has a keyboard i assume

And a mouse?

:| Its obvious its not going to be less than a console but last time i checked $800 != $3000

by video, I mean something with which to see graphical representations (ie a monitor)

and you're assuming quite a bit. I am typing this on a laptop.

Your problem. Most people have a desktop or both. I'm just saying that an upgrade to play crysis isn't HUGE amounts.

Seems more like your problem...or your arguments problem, that is.

Eh? I'm just saying that an upgrade isn't as pricey as the lemmings make it out to be. "Oh teh $3000!!!"

I have no idea..but I will assume that since you brought it up, pc games cost less.

..so, it's a good thing I don't buy that many games per year, nor do I buy new games. Besides, I never said console gaming was cheaper anyway, I said the console itself is cheaper than the pc. (actually I didn't say that til now)

I worked it out backward :p it's 1AM so i have an excuse. Anyway, I'm building my own PC right now, down to the last spec of dust and its gonna cost me £2000. That's $4000. BUT. My PC will be about 5x as powerful as a 360, and will last 5 years before i need to update anything. I could easily half that and spend just $2000 and still get a rig that could play Crysis from scratch.

But, i'm talking about upgrading, its alot cheaper and eaiser.

PC games cost on average $50, while 360 and PS3 games cost $60.

Console owners have to buy a tv huh? Ya, tv's are still pretty rare here in 2007, and there really are no uses for them outside of gaming...so why would anyone have one already?

This is not the same as assuming people have a pc monitor fit for gaming...not even close. The pc all but requires a dedicated monitor with little to no use outside of the pc itself.
