In the past couple of days numerous threads have popped up stating that XBL is not worth the $50/year price tag. While the reasons got mentioned a lot of time, fanboys still continue to ignore them. First of all let me say you will never know how much XBL is better than PSN until you have tried it for yourself...and I am happy to pay the small amount of fee for it as long as M$ can keep XBL at the top spot for console online gaming. And yes I would gladly pay for these features even if silver was allowed to play online.

Note: This response is not by me but by navyguy21 who did a great job in another thread listing the features of XBL, which the PSN is still trying to play catch up with.

What makes LIVE better than PSN?? Ive seen this asked over and over on this site, so since i own both, i decided to list a few. But to fully understand, you have to experience it for yourself. So take this list, find a friend with a 360, and see for yourself.

1- cross game chat -this is more than it sounds. not only can you chat accross different games, but you can seamlessly create a party while in game, and switch from friends only chat, to chatting with people online, all without leaving the game

2- Custom soundtracks- this is the most misunderstood by fanboys. This feature is built into every game, and is built on the LIVE software that MS created. Meaning when i play a custom soundtrack on 360 (whether its from the hard drive, pc, or MP3 player) the game music, and ONLY the game music, stops playing. This doesnt happen with PS3. On 360, it only plays the sound effects and ambient sounds in the game, allowing me to hear my song. PS3 just plays the music (only dev supported) over my game sound.

3-In game access to everything- this is another misunderstood feature. With 360, if im playing a game, and i want to.....say play netflix. i dont have to go to the dashboard first, all i do is press the guide button, and click netflix. It stops my game and immediately plays. Or if im playing........say mass effect, and i wanna play Jade Empire that i downloaded. Same thing, just press the guide, and scroll to downloaded games. Its is nowhere NEAR as easy on PS3

4- Trueskill Ranking system- I cant count how many times i was playing warhawk when i first got it, and got beat like a runaway slave until i got the hang of it. Imagine going to the gym to play basketball, and everyday you had to play against Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq!! Trueskill tracks your accomplishments ingame, and matches you with people on your level, making sure every experience is fair, and fun.

5 Intergration- Kinda speaks for itself. Basically my friends list follows me through every game. im even notified if a friend is playing the same game as me, and allows me to join the right then, no lobbies, menus, or anything. I can also check my achievements, friends achievements, and the profiles of the last 40 people ive played online at anytime, whether im watching a movie, netflix, playing a game, or whatever.

6-Cross game invites- no matter what im doing, i can invite a player to my game with the press of a button. No need to type a message like on PS3. I can also record voice messages to send to anyone ingame.

7-Server based system- the myth going on is that LIVE doesnt have dedicated servers. While this is mostly true, what people fail to realize is that EVERYTHING Live related IS kept on servers, servers that MS maintains. My friends lists, achievements (even my achievement progress), games played, and even my LOCATION or MODE in the game is tracked and displayed to my friends. Meaning i can check my friends profile (ingame if i choose) and see what area hes cruising in GTA iv, or the score in madden or NFL nk9, or the mode, map, and score in Halo 3.

There are many more, but like i said, go experience it for yourself.

XBL and online gaming is NOT for everybody. It's not worth the price if one does not play online games much or can't take advantage of it. That does not make one a fanboy.

I've already tried to put them to rest by pointing out that myself and millions of others pay 180$ for WoW alone but no one listens.

Microsoft should make Xbox Live Free and then talk to Sony to make an agreement where you will only have to pay if you want Cross-Online Intergration.

If online gaming is not for them...than why get gold? For the people who play occasionally, it's not hard to just pay for one month...because when you play online all the features mentioned come into play.

It explains why XBL is marginally better than PSN but doesn't not justify the pricetag, still can't compete with PC gaming?

I had XBL last gen but whats the bloody point now there's PSN? It doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles imaginable. Just games, online! :)

PSN would be crap without Live. Having to play catch up with MS is why Sony has progressed the PSN experience. People will never understand that.

In other words, my Xbox Live fee has made your PSN trophies and other cool features magically manifest. I'm like a patron saint here. I can't get no respect.

All of those features are nice, but why should I have to pay 30-50$ a year, to play a game I already payed for. Also, not all games have trueskill, and PSN has cross game invites.

Dunno if you're serious or not, but without us pc gamers XBL probably wouldn't even exist. You should be thanking us. Who do you think pioneered all the stuff you console gamers call "innovative"?

Nothing changes the simple fact that you are paying for access to online content of your games for a limited amount of time. The gold fee is an absolute ripoff, and completely unnecessary. It is there people people pay for it (as they want to play their games online). Even if the Live service is a good one. Keeping in mind the 360 is the only gaming platform to be charging such a ridiculous fee. Harks back to the MS Games Zone anyone?

Steam is a much better service and is free, silver does almost everything besides online gaming and is free, psn/home is very close to gold and is free also. So looking at the facts gold is over priced for what it offers imo

This is all true, and I think XBL is well worth paying for, in fact, I paid for WoW for 4 years (Stopped now) and I didn't have a problem with that, and it costs double the amount and its only 1 game.

But this really isn't going to convince anyone unless you actually show someone. I play my friend's PS3 all the time and the menu and everything about the online is so frustrating. He didn't believe me that XBL was far better, so I showed him and now he knows :).

Ouch. DENIED!

I think my favorite part of our discourse is when you came with all that bravado about "us PC gamers". I've been a hardcore PC gamer for over 20yrs., and honestly I just don't see it like that. Frankly, I wasn't aware that since 2005 PC has offered universal profiling of a gamer's achievements, gaming history, friends list, and online status.

links and proof please. The last time i checked XBL subs uptake was around 13million.

Anyway the reason i find it a ripoff is the fact i came from PC gaming to console online gaming.Where online has been free since the dawn of time pretty much, all MS did was capitalise on a part of the marketand in some senses the service is good but the core components like playing online can be found elsewhere for free.Thats my main beef with XBL is why pay for something you can get for free before anyone pulls the whole XBL is better than PSN by a large margin is correct in some senses like chat components but when it comes to the meat and veg of playing online both perform the same to be bluntly honest MW2 on 360 is the same lag really as PSN version likewise with about every other title with online componets of recent times.

I only really use the play online component so i feel like im paying to get something i get for free with a lot of extra's i wont use.Thats the reason i wont fork out for xbox live its just the way i see it thats what £40 a year saved, which could be spent on bus's to college or kept as a backup for various othe things. For me its a rip-off because my budget says so i only get what £117 per month for bus's and all that and im only left with say £15 at the end of the month. You do the math.

I am trying to say the cost of XBL is justified. XBL has a lot of servers and they all cost money to run. Also XBL has cross-game chat, party chat all require servers to operate.

And the PSN is magically free to run? probably costs Sony just as much to run the servers.....how does thesse kinda things justify the service i mean there is a lot of ways those could be covered with benefits to MS and the consumer like advertisements ig and various other things much like ITV does in the UK where as you pay for the BBC get no ads and the only decent program is top gear....

xboxlive is not a ripoff.

It's only 4 bucks a month, that's less than an hour of minimum wage pay. If you can't spare 4 bucks a month you definitely picked the wrong hobby.

For me personally I really dont care about all these "features" XBL has over PSN. I just want to game online on occassions for free which the PSN allows me to do.

I am trying to say the cost of XBL is justified. XBL has a lot of servers and they all cost money to run. Also XBL has cross-game chat, party chat all require servers to operate.

xhawk27
No it is nothing of the sort. Every server costs money to run, how do you think GS pays for itself; advertising. Microsoft generated a huge amount off the marketplace alone which is more than enough to cover the costs of data hosting, also considering Microsoft already does this with their other Live services. All further laughable considering these features including many game hosting, are client hosted - your own bandwith is being depended on. But hey at the end of the day it boils down to MS not letting you access content you already paid for on disk. Charming isn't it. There is simply no justification, especially when so many other services and practices stand - 360's Live being the only one to do otherwise.

Meh.... while Xbox Live online is far superior to other console offerings... I simply wasn't playing anything on my xbox online as of late so I just went with silver instead of gold. BC2 on PC is taking up most of my gaming time. Oh well... I guess if Reach ends up being good I'll get Live again. I'm still kind of pissed that you have to pay for it though... if Sony offered everything Xbox live did for free Microsoft would be forced to offer their service for free.

xboxlive is not a ripoff.

It's only 4 bucks a month, that's less than an hour of minimum wage pay. If you can't spare 4 bucks a month you definitely picked the wrong hobby.

Vaasman

The fact that something is cheap doesn't mean that it's not a ripoff. When someone charges you money (even a small amount) for what everyone else is giving you for free, that's a ripoff.

And let's be honest here, why list all these things that you can do on XBL? The vast majority are paying for it for one reason and one reason only, it's the only way they can play games online.

wether XBL is a ripp-off or not is a subjective opinion,it's all about personal preference, what one person considers a ripp-off another person see's as good value for money, but it makes me laugh to see cows moan about 50 quid a year to play XBL when they forked out for the most expensive console in history, in my personal opnion, when the Ps3 first released it was a complete ripp-off till the price drop last year, i can still get a 360 elite, 1 years xbl gold and it would still be 20 quid cheaper than buying the cheapest Ps3 SKU, like i said, it's all personal preference, and the way i see it, you have only been ripped-offif you FEEL that you have been ripped off.

1- cross game chat -this is more than it sounds. not only can you chat accross different games, but you can seamlessly create a party while in game, and switch from friends only chat, to chatting with people online, all without leaving the game I agree ps3 does not have this yet but its on its way.

How is Custom soundtracks related to paying for online gaming? I dont get it.

Its is nowhere NEAR as easy on PS3 Actually it is as easy, and has been since we got the in game XMB for free. It happens the same way you just described it.

Most Games already have inbuilt matchmaking.

Ps3 has the same features, just go and look it up. The only difference is that you usually have to go trough a lobby. There are a few exceptions.

6-Cross game invites- no matter what im doing, i can invite a player to my game with the press of a button. No need to type a message like on PS3. I can also record voice messages to send to anyone ingame. Minor difference here, sure you need to send a message on the ps3, but they are rewritten for you so you just have to press send, or add some more text or pictures or whatever if you want to. Obviously worth 50 bucks

So you think the PSN doesnt have gamers info on servers? Servers Sony maintains?
I bought a slim model and i got my trophies and other data back because all my info was stored on the servers. For free.

There are many more, but like i said, go experience it for yourself. I have, its not worth it. Ask any Wii, PC or Ps3 gamer. But since you blindly believe its ok to pay what others are getting for free, keep voting with your wallet

There you have it.

Honestly... what does it matter whether it's worth $50/year? People still apparently pay for it. Whether a person feels the price is justified or not is dependent on how they view ethics.

Everything Highlighted can also be done on PS3 or is simply a flat out lie. How about joining us on recent firmware navyguy....

Any game I've ever played with custom soundtracks, ONLY the game music is stopped and I still hear all the in game sounds

Ps3 also has in game access to anything. Just as you said with the 360, you select what you want to do, the ps3 says you cant do it in game so it quits it and start up whatever you want.

PS3 has a players emt list that track the last 50 people you've seen in game. You can go to this list an message them or check their trophies or add as a friend.

You don't have to type ANYTHING with the PS3 cross game invites. you go to their name hit triangle, send invite, then send. That's it. and to accept an invite you go to the players name, hit triangle then accept invite.

All PSN info is also kept on servers. I dunno why you think that this is something Live has over PSN.

Basically TC, if this topic were made 2 years ago you may have a few points on your side, but as it stands that whole post is pretty much fail. And I'm thinking that Navyguys ps3 must be fictional if he think that PS3 is can't do 3/4 of the stuff he listed.

even if XBL cooks, cleans and makes love to me, it is still a rip off, online play should be free. also, trying to prove to other people that it is worth paying for shows that it is a rip off.

It's a rip cause live silver has the same features as gold besides online multiplayer for free. How can anybody justify the added cost when every other console and pc has online gaming for free is beyond me ??
