https://www.ign.com/articles/timesplitters-reportedly-the-next-ps2-emulated-game-to-hit-ps5-and-ps4

Hot on the heels of the release of PlayStation 2 games Tomb Raider Legend, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalogcomes word of the next potential addition to the list: TimeSplitters.

Gematsu spotted a rating for TimeSplitters on PS5 and PS4 in Taiwan, indicating Free Radical Design’s much-loved shooter is coming to the Classics Catalog soon.

TimeSplitters first released in 2000 as a launch game for the PlayStation 2 and a spiritual successor to Rare’s GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Indeed TimeSplitters was made by some of the people who worked on those iconic N64 shooters. It took place across multiple different time periods with 18 separate characters battling against the titular foe, creatures who can travel through time and wreck history using special crystals.

It got a sequel in TimeSplitters 2 in 2002, and a further entry in 2005 called TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. After Free Radical struggled to find a publisher for a fourth game, the rights languished at Crysis developer Crytek for years before Deep Silver parent Koch Media bought them up in 2018. Eventually, as with so much video game intellectual property, TimeSplitters ended up in Embracer’s vault.

Oh snap, even though it’s the PS2 one, if they give us online multiplayer that would be fantastic, don’t you agree, SW? Are you excited to play TimeSplitters again?

Never played any of the TimeSplitters games before. Not sure if I’ll ever get around to them to be honest. Just got way too much stuff on my plate these days.

Weird. I was literally thinking about this a day or two ago. Unfortunately, I don't think this is really worth it. The problem is that the game (at least the shooting) is/was pretty crap, at least for the first one. The main selling points were it's settings (time traveling through different eras), the humor, the challenges, and the map maker. Maybe they fixed the shooting in the sequels. I don't know.

All good stuff, but I doubt it really holds up. Seems like they should've done all the games, and drop them at the same time. Get that nostalgia push, and then drop a new game, with more modern shooting. And if they charge full price for this.... oof.

But now that I've said that, it will probably do really well 🤪

Interesting. I'd buy it if it had modern features at a good price. I'll probably be playing elden ring though.

Hope Switch gets 2 and Future Perfect at least next. Xbox has those two already.

TimeSplitters 2 and 3 are on Xbox and are basically remastered. No point in me getting this for PS5. As Litchie pointed out, give the gamers a brand new TimeSplitters game.

I like the og timesplitters, first games I ever played on PS2 was TimeSplitters, Smugglers Run, and ATV offroad Fury. My dad got a PS2 at launch from a friend of his that owned a gamestore, but he doesn't really play games but used it as a DVD player, so it became mine. Good memories

@sargentd: The single player for Smuggler's Run was so hard! I don't think I beat the first mission. The multiplayer in the other hand was a blast! My main launch games were Timesplitters, The Summoner, and Armored Core 2.

AAA singleplayer FPS games are dead.

Now, I wouldn't mind one with the same PS2 style of graphics and a lower budget, but yeah no AAA publisher is making singleplayer FPS games right now. Eventhough there would totally be a market for them.

Litchie, did you play the ones on Gamecube, or did you play all of them?

Only played TimeSplitters 2 on GC. Wanted TS3 as well, but never got around to it. Fucking loved TS2, awesome game.

Sadly you're right. The only AAA shooter with a singleplayer focus that we are getting is Doom: The Dark Ages and maybe the Perfect Dark reboot.

A remake or reboot could be good, but a remaster won't be good enough.

Yeah it's good that these games are still being made. We could add Metro and Stalker to that list (to please Ghost)

But the thing is, a lot of the money in shooters these days is being made with skins. That is why Ubisoft even released a free shooter the other day: Xdefiant.

Even the best shooter of the year, Helldivers, goes for this pattern of being an online shooter, live service, having battle pass and skins.

Unfortunately rereleases like Perfect Dark and Timesplitters are done in the worst way possible.

They aren't remasters, so you get them in the exact same package that they were at release, with framedrops and all.

And even worse they are locked behind a monthly subscription.

Hate to be the devils advocate here, but at that point you're better off emulating.
